fudzilla says the price-cut for GTX 460-1G and GTX 470 is not permanent and will only last until 14th November.

Either their 5x0 successors are closer than we thought, or the cards are too expensive to make to maintain these prices.

We will know in the future if price cuts are permanent or not. There is no way to know. And whether they are too expensive is irrelevant. The question is whether it is good to sell them at this price. The margins might be slimmer, they might even be negative, that does not in and of itself mean they will not continue to sell at the price. The decision will be made based on the economics. And yes selling at a loss can be better than not selling at all sometimes.

Unless it is announced ahead of time as a sort of "limited time offer", I think it would be an absolutely stupid business decision on nVidia's part to undo a price cut. I just don't think nVidia is that stupid.

More product for the same $$$ would be equivalent to a reimbursement as long as you actually want more of that product. That's fair to assume for 460's, 470's not so much

pclab.pl also got confirmation from Igor Stanek (responsible for "promotion of NV products in Europe, Africa, middle-East and India) that price cuts are permanent.

You might want to ask some NV retailers on how their are getting "reimbursed" .. you'll laugh your pants of.. honestly.

For those, who don't have an opportunity to ask NV retailers, how about a story?

Well, maybe the price-cuts are permanent, but not full-area. Only one e-shop here (Czech Republic) offered GTX460 and GTX470 for the better prices; their prices in other shops were significantly higher. The difference is smaller now, but still present. It's more or less a public secret, that the shop has some settlement with nVidia. It can be easily recognized, which price is "affected" by the settlement (ends by "..99" and which aren't (casual numbers). It seems to be quite new and effective way of marketing

The GTS 455 is since some months in public drivers. There are rumors in China that GTX 460 768MB might be replaced by a GF104-SKU with fewer SPs (~288SP), called GTS 455 or GTX 460 SE.

That looks exactly like a GTX 470 cooler, with the more modest heatpipes which don't stick out of the shroud like the 480s. If it's really like a GF100b with more units enabled but on the same process, I guess either the cooler was improved or the TDP was brought down.
