NVIDIA GeForce RTX 50-series Blackwell Availability

40 Super cards released almost exactly a year ago and there wasn't much of this at all, supply was fairly abundant and after maybe a week or so you could just buy the cards for MSRP. So I don't think this is a seasonal thing.

The 40 series was a refresh which would entail rather different production and shipment logistics as well as launch demand.

The current situation would be a result of a multitude of factors most of which are rather typical such as the afore mentioned seasonal/cyclical impacts and it being a new generation product launch. The need to overthink and try to find some sort of single attribuble reason for the in ability to buy just a few weeks in just seems like doing too much, or well I guess for some people that brings in more income via views. Often the typical, simple and boring explanation is the reality.

I also have to circle back to another issue in that all the hearsay aside there's very little actual number analysis being provided to paint the actual picture especially context. I've asked this earlier as well, what is the actual total 50 series shipment rate vs 40 series shipment rate over each respective lifecycle?

And more to the point, the "configuration" @DegustatoR is referring to is simply the extant silicon chips with slightly less cores fused off and a bit of clock bump thanks to the refinement of the process node over the prior 12+ months of work. It was literally just taking advantage of good yields to make slightly better chips for the same price; the rest of the PCB required nothing.

By the way, I still love my cheap open-box-sale 4070 Super cards for folding. So many PPD for so few watts and dollars.

Are there any somewhat accurate price/stock trackers? I can't quite remember how long it's been since you could realistically purchase a mid-high end NV GPU. I think it was some time between Thanksgiving and Christmas but the history trackers I've found are full of shit. It's been at least since late December because that's when I noticed.

Camelcamelcamel should be reliable for Amazon listings.

E.g. The Asus TUF 4090 disappeared sometime in December.

In terms of Canada (I think that's where you are?) retailers had specials up to the boxing day sales period for the 4070 Super through 4080 Super widely available. After that I'd say you missed your general opportunity for GPUs in that segment. RTX 4070's and lower are still available for MSRP, including with the occasional spot sale (staples had a 4070 for $760 CAD a few weeks ago).

But in general (this coming from a price/deal hawk) right now as with Q1 in general for some time now it's generally not the best buying time for PC components in general. AMD GPUs in those segments are available for instance but they're way more expensaive then the deals that were available in Q4. Again as someone who price hawks and participates in those "deal communities" if you were to ask me as someone who's flexible in purchasing timelines avoid Q1 unless it's something release specific to those quarters. Q3/Q4 are the times to buy.

And it extends beyond just GPUs either. Just ancedotally I've been looking for a case and the Puredark 500's went up from $75 to now $100. Meanwhile the Puredark 501 (that's the newer iteration) that was technically launched in 2024 October still hasn't had wide shipments in Canada. Maybe BeQuiet is participating in the same product launch conspiracy as some claim Nvidia is?

What different logistics exactly? It's a card launch, why would it be any different?

Sorry I'm not sure how familiar in terms of background you are with what the 40 Super cards are. Some others have responded on the design side considerations already. But that reuse with minimal (if any) changes just simplifies production. Also granted I guess consumers might not care about this but because there's going to need to be less "secrecy" with a refresh this helps with the production and shipment timelines as well.

There's also factors as well. I know enthuasists in these communities are hyper focused on DIY retail but that's only a small part of overall discrete GPU shipments, even with the overlap with SI. Mobile for example accounts for roughly 50% of discrete GPU shipments. The 40 Super series refresh was desktop only meanwhile logistically there is a mobile launch for the 50 series for March that needs to be accomodated for.

There were a few 5090’s with stock at my local microcenter today. I was shocked to see them actually update inventory on the website. Maybe scalpers have stopped camping outside the store waiting for delivery trucks to show up.

I'm in the US and here even the 4070 has been MIA for a few weeks now.

You can now apply to Nvidia for priority access to buy FE cards. I guess it’s better than nothing. Going to try my luck on a 5090.

I don’t login to Nvidia app so no idea how they’re going to tell I’m a gamer and not some grubby scalper. Hopefully my sporadic GeForceNow usage counts.

Okay hear me out. Jensen could allocate GPUs based on gamercred. If your Steam account is >15 years old you get first dibs. If you can explain how to use Very High settings in Crysis under DX9 from memory you get a chance to purchase a GPU at MSRP.

Oh man no 5090 for me then. I’m pretty sure I played in DX10.
