NVIDIA: Beyond G80...

I think the problem is that I am running Vista. I imagine I could overclock fine if I went back to Windows XP. I'm not really comfortable flashing the BIOS of my graphics card at the moment. Though the risk is very small that I'll kill it, the thing did cost $650.

Just fyi, I checked on my system and it won't overclock stably. I could try underclocking it, I suppose.

Edit: Odd, checked some more, and it's got to be a problem with nTune. I was going by the built-in overclocking test, which fails from just a modest overclock. But I checked back, and it fails from any overclock. So I guess I'll have to be not lazy and just test it manually.

Edit 2: Well, I haven't been able to overclock the thing. nTune refuses to overclock it when the built in test fails, and it fails for every setting outside the default. PowerStrip doesn't seem to be able to overclock it. I'm downloading the 101.41 Vista drivers from guru3D at the moment, so maybe that'll work. We'll see.

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger, Chal. It's not just you. I think it gets a mention on the Vista page dev log at nvidia.com too.

just looking at device id's today

0x0191, "NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX"
0x0193, "NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS"

Seems to be something missing in the middle and the top sku always has a 0 at the end, so something is missing on the top too (always for the refresh)

Wouldn't be surprised in the least if Nvidia releases cards slightly above and below the GTX in performance. There's a big gap between it and the GTS ATM.

Wow Nvidia is preparing hardware for the next version of DirectX? No way!! Shock! Intrigue! :p

The shock is more on the stated time frame.
1 year ? That's really small, considering DX10 is hardly even established yet (unless SM 5.0 is part of DX10.1, not DX11).

The shock is more that x-bit labs managed to get so much information wrong in a single article. No offense, but for that kind of stuff, it tends to be a good idea to check your facts! :) (hint: what do you think Fragment50 really is? Consider what Fragment40, Fragment30 and Fragment 20 stand for...)

NV20, NV30, NV40 and "canned" NV50?

But it's still supported in Cg. So yes, Arnold is correct, although NV50 was never 'canned'...

Humm, i see.
Anyway, wasn't there a difference in shader models between NV20 and NV25 ?
I was under the impression that NV25 had an advanced pixel shader 1.3 support, while NV20 only had pixel shader 1.0/1.1 (or something like that).

MyDrivers and Fudzilla are reporting that NVIDIA is preparing for G90 and even G100 and we could probably see them within a year. According to the article, G90 is an improvement on the current G80 architecture and there won't be any major changes. G100 will be a total new GPU architecture. There isn't too much information on G90 and G100 right now but we could see them by Q1 2008. G100 will match up against AMD R700.

Something about this sounds fishy. We havent even seen the full potential of G80 yet there are rumours of G100 (supposedly a new arch) already and we are talking about Q1 08.
