NV40 IQ

But seeing the raw power of the NV40, a lot of games could probably be played using 1600x1200 with 6xMSAA, if only the NV40 could do 6xMSAA.

Why does everyone forget that, ATM, there are so many games that , at 1600x1200, you cannot read any text onscreen, so it becomes much more important to be able to use better FSAA at lower resolutions....... with the power of the NV40, 1280x1024, 8x FSAA would really be nice, and very doable.......This I think is by far the most disappointing thing about the NV40, and may make the R420 a much better gamers card......

That depends on the size of your monitor.

And the ability of your eyes - hope your eyes are better than mine when you reach my age, Joe! ;) BTW, have a 21" IBM P202 w/ trinitron tube, and it hard for me to see text and smaller than most things at 1280x1024, and in some cases, 1024x768! Of course, this could all be taken care of if the game makers supply the ability to ajust text size ingame.... but very few do.....

Personally, I'm looking forward to buy a HDTV LCD monitor with 1920x1080 in 40" or something like that, as soon as the prices are down so much that I can afford it. Then texts should be big enough... :D

Btw, do games support 1920x1080?

Games render text incorrectly. They should adjust font size relative to display size and viewing distance. For example, under CSS rules for HTML, 1px means something different on your screen vs a 300DPI laser printer.

If done correctly, a given font size (user selected) would appear about the same physical size no matter how high your resolution. What would increase is the quality of the font's renderng. Of course, glyphs should also be antialiased as well.

depends on the game. I run my 19" crt at 1440x1080 @ 100Hz custom res as the gap between 1280x960 and 1600x1200 is far too big imo. In quite a few games this res appears in the list, in others it doesn't

I agree with this, and it's always been one of my pet peeves, actually...;) Fonts in games should scale with resolution so that they are easily readable at the max res a player might wish to use. If a game supports a res, the game fonts should properly scale.

I think adjustable sizes would be better.

I've seen moans that morrowind shrinks stuff at high res. I like it the size it is at 1600x1200 as I can fit more than 10% of my inventory on screen. :p

Adjustable font size should be a res-independent settings, IMO. I prefer DC's way (The Right Way ;)), and more newer games tend to use it, thankfully.
