Nv30 Confirmed RElease at Comdex?

I saw on some other boards that NV30 based cards will start shipping very shortly after the annoucement on Comdex, but who knows...

There's a big difference between 'introduce' and 'release.' Still, it's better for everyone ('cept ATi) if they get it out the door sooner.

Alex:

How do these people on whatever board (better be Nvidias OWN board or something or else they really can't have a frickin clue) expect Nvidia to start shipping soon after comdex when first silicon is barely back from the fab?

Don't they like have to verify the design first, tune and debug the drivers, maybe respin, verify again, then ramp production, ship to their OEMs wait for boards to be produced, etc...?

How is all that possible to accomplish in the short space up until comdex or soon after? Do they have magic fingers you think, or maybe you're just a teensy-weensy bit over-enthusiastic? :)

 lets hope so. I havn't even heard of any samples out yet :( . This is nearly October. You might get a prototype by Christmas but availability in Retail stores I doubt. I hope I am wrong and hear some real facts about the NV30 instead of hope it is this, hope it does this type info.

TAIPEI (AFX-ASIA) - Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (2330.TW) has seen a recovery in order inflows as it has succeeded in improving the yield on the 0.13 micron process technology, the Commercial Times reported, without naming sources.

TSMC's Fab 6 at the Tainan Science-based Industrial Park, which is the company's 0.13 micron production centre, has raised its yield ratio to an average 50-60 pct and 80 pct at one time over the past two weeks, it said.

Accordingly, NVIDIA Corp is expected to resume orders for chips meant for the Xbox game console in the fourth quarter, equivalent to 3,000 8-inch wafers per month, it said.

At the same time, TSMC is slated to present samples of NVIDIA'S NV30 product line for certification at the end of October.

If all turns out well, TSMC is set to supply such products equivalent to 20,000 8-inch wafers from November to January, it said.

Separately, Altera Corp is also expected start contracting TSMC to make programmable logic devices on 0.13 micron process technology in the fourth quarter, it added.

So with the news that samples of NV30 will not be out until the very end of October, lets do some educated timeline scenarios...

If this first spin sample is perfect (yes, lets assume the impossible), how long will it take to ship the chips to board makers, then have the board makers produce the cards, then ship them out to stores? What is the likely timeline?

If this first spin isn't 100% perfect, then how long will it take for a second respin? Another 4-6 weeks?

Once again it appears that February is a realistic date, Christmas??? Maybe for a select few and probably sample boards at that.

nVidia are confident that NV30 will come out in time for Christmas and will be in large enough quantaties for everyone...

And I still stick to what I think: NV30 will be released shortly after the annoucement on Comdex.

And so was 3dfx with their V5.

well who cars, if the nv30 boards are on shelves @christmas.

Nvidia sells chips not boards.
When they start shiping NV30 to manufacturers, they will make money. That's all they have to care about.
It does not matter if the NV30 is out beforce christmas or in january.
People interested in this card will buy it anyway no matter if they have to wait until january or february.

Time will tell. No big deal, Nvidia will ship when ready. Do the manufacturers have NV30 chips (estimate is in November)? Has Nvidia tested out the samples? How long does that take (2-4 weeks) with around the clock testing of drivers and available hardware? What if the design is faulty as in GPU/board (opps another delay)? Do the manufacturers have sample boards to go by? Once they do how long before they gear and tool up with the necessary parts and equipement and start manufacturing boards (30 days seems like really pushing it)? Do the manufacturers have a ready supply of DDRII ram waiting by or are they waiting for the sample design to pass to make purchasing decisions? (Another decision and time delay) Then how long before the boards are shipped to retailers? It will be interesting, Nvidia CEO was confident the NV30 would be out in August (that obviously didn't pan out). There is alot to do between now and Christmas, ATI looks like they will have a great holiday season this year with little competition :D.

There maybe a few NV30's under the Christmas tree but mountains of Radeon9700's and 9500's and 9000's but for the most part I doubt the NV30 board what ever it is called (GollyForce1) will be readily available.

well who cars, if the nv30 boards are on shelves @christmas.

The shareholders care.
I care too. I want NV30 to ship before XMAS. I don't have any stock in NVIDIA though - could be a bad time to buy some if I personally am unsure if NV30 will ship before or after XMAS.

Plus in December doesn't alot of manufacturing places and designers go on vacation? This could also be a big mistake on Nvidia's part to rush a card out not ready for prime time. It could literally hand over the graphics industry to ATI. ATI is in a very comforable position now. It has the mobile market, OEM market looks outstanding with the Radeon 9000. The Radeon 9500 could plummet the GF4 series of cards because it is cheap, fast and with DX9 technology. The Radeon 9700 is readily available and is a performance proven video card which many are putting on their wish list to own, prices are now starting to fall below $300.

It would not only help nVidia to have NV30's available ASAP, but it would also help all of us! Why? Well, an industry with one one viable producer really sucks for us comsumers. I want ATI & nVidia both to do well......beat each others brains out, and deliver even better products for ALL of us.
