NPD November 2004

Clashman

Yeah PS2 has a lot more then 51% total global market share and GC has a lot less then 25%. What that report is saying is that GC has 25% of the global sales this year so far.

Reaching nearly 23 million, the PlayStation 2 installed base is unprecedented at this point in the lifecycle. PlayStation 2 currently comprises more than 51 percent of the next-generation year-to-date market share, with the closest competitor, GameCube, with less than half the market share at 25 percent, according to NPD Funworld.

Could it be that the 23 million figure is only for the U.S., and they are comparing that to worldwide GC figures of about 11 or 12 million?

Edit: missed the 'year' part of the to date figure. My mistake.

My bad. I said it was globablly and it's not. Just crunched the numbers in the PDF I mentioned earlier and this is how it looks...

Year-to-date, US only...

Playstation2 - 4,418,000 units - 51.34%
Gamecube - 2,120,000 units - 24.63%
Xbox - 2,068,000 units - 24.03%

Total - 8,606,000 units - 100%

SCEA decided not to include the GBA unit numbers. They would have been 5,740,000 units year-to-date.

Looking more at the press release I see that they never mentioned global numbers or share. Sorry. Still an interesting announcement none-the-less.

I would have thought Nintendo would have made announcement based on these numbers, but they might have thought the announcement on Dec 2 was sufficient. Here's a link to it if you to want to read it...

They did. Here's the link: http://www.planetgamecube.com/forums/messageview.cfm?catid=7&threadid=7350&STARTPAGE=1

DID YOU KNOW?

November TRSTS Update

December 16, 2003 - In the race to be the best-selling video game this holiday, only one competitor can get the checkered flag. In November, that game was Mario Kart®: Double Dash!!?, exclusively for Nintendo GameCube?. According to NPDFunworld's November Toy Retail Sales Tracking Service (TRSTS), approximately 528,000 copies of Mario Kart: Double Dash!! were sold, easily besting any other video game on any system.

This feat is even more remarkable when you realize that Mario Kart: Double Dash!! was in stores for only 14 days in November, following its launch on Nov. 17.

Additional Nintendo highlights from the November TRSTS data include:

754,000 Nintendo GameCube systems were sold in November, making it the best-performing month in the system's history. The strong sales propelled Nintendo GameCube past Microsoft's Xbox in year-to-date sales.

Sales of hardware and software for Nintendo GameCube have increased at a faster rate than either of its console competitors so far this year.

Console sales, YTD versus 2002

o Nintendo GameCube: +61 percent
o Xbox: +5 percent
o PlayStation 2: -36 percent

Software sales, YTD versus 2002

o Nintendo GameCube: +60 percent
o Xbox: +59 percent
o PlayStation 2: +21 percent

As for Game Boy® Advance, more than 1.3 million units were sold in November, beating the nearest console competitor by more than 50 percent.

When combined, Nintendo hardware accounted for 57 percent of total hardware units sold in November.

Actually Nintendo themselves didn't make that announcement. I've search the wires and Nintendo's site and have yet to find an official announcement from them. If you can find an official one, that would be appreciated.

MK:DD isn't the best selling game, though. True Crime sold 354,448 on PS2, 198,245 on XBox and 50,435 on GC (= 603128)
On the same report, MK:DD sold 527,742.

Either they cannot count or they were talking about GCN here
or perhaps they are only considering the numbers on each consle. I.e true crime counts as three tittles . Each one on its own sold less than mario kart .

Marconelly, actually you are right and wrong. It's not fair to put it like that as MKDD was only released on one console and the numbers you posted for TC was on all 3 major platforms. So the normal charts that you'll see everywhere (EGM, etc) will show MKDD at the number 1 spot. But yes to TC as well.

I'm aware of that, but it's all one game that made money for one company, so it makes sense to just add numbers together.

Of course MK:DD likely made more money for Nintendo anyone, since the "one company" was themselves and they had no cuts to make. ;)

Teasy it was a joke only, no intention too offend you just soo you know.

Ah ok, I wondered what you were on about :)

That´s impressive, and the thing is it seem´s too sell more now.. OMG

Its definitely selling very strongly, but its not selling more now then it has in the past, not in the U.S anyway:

2002 - Jan to Nov console sales:

Playstation2 - 6,900,000 units - 67.73%
Xbox - 1,970,000 units - 19.34%
Gamecube - 1,318,000 units - 12.94%

2003 - Jan to Nov console sales:

Playstation2 - 4,418,000 units - 51.34%
Gamecube - 2,120,000 units - 24.63%
Xbox - 2,068,000 units - 24.03%

Console growth/decline:

GC + 61%
XBox + 5%
PS2 - 36%

As I said though PS2 is still selling extremely strongly. Its sold slightly more then GC and XBox combined so far this year in the U.S. Which is very impressive indeed.

What is Sony doing right with the PS2?
Well, I can tell you why I just bought myself a PS2 for Christmas. I want to play Xenosaga, ICO and the .hack games. Quite simple, isn't it? I think the PS2 has already reached a critical mass of some sort which makes 3rd party exclusives, and thereby gamers, flock to it. There is little that Sony can do wrong now.

I am actually thinking of buying a second PS2 once they're cheap enough. I'd have one for development and research purpouses (PS2linux) and the other for gaming only. Now if only Sony would drop the price a little more + a game I want...... 8)

I got my ps2 on launch day . Same as my other systems. Whats making it sell so well still is its price in comparison to its hype.

In the beginning there was plenty of hype, but at this point there's certainly none for any of the consoles. We're not being bombarded with advertising, promotional ploys, or extravagant claims. (Well, except by gaming companies themselves talking about their games.) It still has more generic visability and is more synonymous with console gaming, which can lend it more value, but I think now it's mainly because have more games, get more of the games, and are wider-spread in that area that makes people feel it's "the one to buy first" if you're going that way at all. I know a number of my brother's contemporaries who'd normally do nothing but make fun of video gaming in general, but got amazingly excited the first time they saw Karaoke Revolution and had to go out and buy PS2's almost immediately. How many totally new console buyers came out of the woodwork with EyeToy?

"Hype" has long since died down. It's been the same market factors and public desires (and heck, whimsy) for years now for PS2, and well over a year for the others.

I agree. Although the "hype" mantra is a convienent explination, I think the combination of the PS2's continued sales at a high price point with the wide availability of competing consoles/options for the consumers just shows that there is substance behind the PS2's sales.

I've seen 8 adds on tv for the ps2 and or ps2 games today. I've only watched 2 hours of tv though. There is still a ton of hype.
