NPD February 2007

Hmm... Extra one billion for the year, because of 100$ price cut...
I wonder what sort of fuzzy math they have used to calculate that??
Correct me if I'm confused, but wouldn't that mean Sony has forecasted to sell 10 million units in Japan alone in 1 year, as 10 million units x 100$ is 1 billion dollars!?, or is there some other method to count it? Naturally it's unnecessary to say that they actually haven't forecasted selling that many units, because that would be nuts.

It would make sense if they calculated to lose 1 billion during the whole lifetime of PS3. I could see that this drop would have been implemented in their road map so that it would actually affect the first 10 million units sold in japan, and after that the two different road maps would have merged.

Well, I can't argue with this logic at all, because you're absolutely right.

Yet that's the direct connection that recent articles have asserted and attributed to Stringers inner circle in terms of quoting the cause/effect of said drop. Absolutely though it seems a bit outlandish... frankly I think it's just too early for anyone to know how pricing/supply/demand will effect things - we just need to pay careful attention to the quarterly financial reports and what language/estimates SCEI uses I guess to try and get a better handle on what is costing what.

Well, whatever the case SCE's losing ~$2 billion on the console this year, so... it is costing them quite a bit. But since a $100 drop by its very nature likely contributes 'only' $200 million to the loss (assuming arbitrarily 2 million of the more expensive PS3 variant were manufactured for Japan ahead of the revisions), the rest is likely "just" general component sourcing pain associated with the pre-launch woes.

How would the EU have any influance on US/JAP sales? We hardly ever get any data on consoles sold in europe so it wont change anything at all. Americans wont suddenly start buying more ps3's because we europeans can now buy one.

It influences third party support. Simple as that. Same reason as to why Microsoft wanted to be out before Sony and be cheaper than Sony. Become the lead SKU, and stay the lead SKU. If worldwide, the PS3 does well, it will get better support, get better ports, become the lead SKU more often, and that will affect all games targetted at more than 1 region. Then, if the base is large enough, exclusives become more interesting.

Additionally, just as some Europeans factored in Japanese support for the PS2 into their buying decisions, if Europe goes ape-shit over the PS3, it can still affect U.S. buyers because they may believe as a result of it that PS3 software support will be superior again the next generation (or that BluRay will win the format war, or whatever).

There are a lot of things factoring in. It is easier to list the number of things that will have some kind of impact though, than predicting how big that impact really is going to be.

How many console generations do we have to go through before we realize that one console's install base is not the install base for its successor? The general trend in console history has been one of extreme fluctuation due to the longevity of a hardware generation and the way each console stands apart from its predecessors as a distinct, isolated product. The consistency of sales numbers between PS1 and PS2 is the exception, not the rule. It's relatively unsurprising, then, that PS3 sales aren't being driven by the number of PS2 sold in the last 6 years.

That's not actually true. It does factor in, absolutely. I think it generally takes two generations two win, and two generations to lose a market. There are exceptions, but they are just that.

360 numbers last February were better than PS3 now (was around 160K, IIRC), 360 was supply-limited and had launched into 3 territories. Besides, it's not very useful to compare numbers in a vacuum except for making fanboys feel better (although it's not even possible in this case) : outside of this theorical vacuum (ie when you compare 360 now and PS3 now), the 360 has picked up a lot of steam, sells solid numbers every month in addition to large amounts of SW, and has a number of killer apps planned for the rest of the year.

I'm just pointing out the risk of comparing the PS3's number in a vacuum in much the same way.

I'm not sure the EU launch will have any influence on March and April NPD numbers, btw.
Regarding the state of the PS3 EU launch, wee Sony has claimed they were on target for 6 millions units by the end of March, has yet to sell over 1 million in JP (tracking behind the NGC right now), and has very slow sales in NA. Which must mean there are something like 3 or 4 millions units on their way to EU right now.

:D Of course, they can always just stack the extra PS3s right next to those piles of 360s stacked in the back of the stores already, eh? ;) In that respect, there is a lot of store space available in the E.U. to fill up. Lets say that, on average, they are aiming for 1 million sold and located in houses with families and students, and another million shipped and stored with retailers. ;)

But seriously, the EU launch is maybe more of a launch than the U.S. / Japan launch was, with a lot of software being scheduled around it, some serious Firmware upgrades planned, and we already had the high-profile GDC announcements (though in the main-stream, I don't know how much influence those will have). There will be a lot of news and PR (and games!) from the European launch, and that may affect sales in other regions. We'll see soon enough. Back in the 16bit era I placed my bet on the Atari ST (a machine I greatly enjoyed by the way). For this generation though, I'm trying to pick the Amiga, like I have been doing for the last 2 generations. ;)

Yes, it is actually true.
NES to SNES: -20%
SNES to N64: -33%
N64 to GC: -36%

SMS to MD: +137%
MD to Saturn: -71%
Saturn to DC: +4% (but DC was produced for less than 2 years; Saturn struggled along for 3)

GBA is also trailing the original GB by over 40 million units, or around 35%, GBA's shorter lifespan being due to tougher competition. I can't find numbers for the 5200 or 7800, but I know they were huge drop-offs from the 2600. Literally, the only thing resembling consistency out there is PS1 to PS2 (+11%), and even that gap looks like it might continue to widen for some time yet. There are simply no guarantees in the console race; the numbers show that no matter how well you're doing, you can't rest on your laurels. Brand awareness fades pretty fast if your new machine isn't something that anyone wants, because the presence of the old machine doesn't benefit you, nor does it inconvenience you in the slightest to buy a competitor's new product. It's not like the home computer space where you have a whole range of factors practically compelling you to stick with your current supplier rather than switch to another. It's more like cars. You may love your 97 Pontiac, but when you need a new car in 2007, if the new Pontiacs are crap, you'll be driving a Toyota.
I think it generally takes two generations two win
The only players to ever "win a console war," Atari, Nintendo, and Sony, all took the #1 spots with their debut products.

I'm pretty sure there are many people (hundreds of thousands, probably) in NA and JP currently sitting on the fence, and just waiting from a couple positive reports from EU to spend $600 on a PS3. As they say over there at NeoGAF, "Believe !"

The NA American people weren't waiting for the SMS and Atari ST to conquer Europe, nor were they jumping onboard the PC-Engine/TG16 when it conquered Japan. There maybe a few thousand people who linger in forums (like us) but "hundreds of thousands" I seriously doubt. I think for the average NA shopper, it will take walking into walmart and seeing 1)a better library 2)a killer app type game 3)a lower price..... 99% of consumers will not care nor have any idea how well a $600 console sells in Europe.

sarcasm?

I'm sure EU will have its share of early adopters and news stories (with pics of people lining up to get their pre-orders) will be all the rage for about 3-5 days and then the flurry, like all things, will die down to a dull roar. We will be right back where we were last week. at least until more software or price drops appear.

I could have sworn that Sony was talking about ramping up production to 1-2 million units a month, totalling 12-24 million units for the year. Doesn't this put that $1 billion dollar figure in the right ball park?

You're proving my point. Nintendo didn't give up market domination to Playstation, they lost market against Sega, and then lost the three-way race against the two other consoles. I could see Sony lose 33% of its market share for this generation, sure, but that would still make it big - however, much more vulnerable for the next generation.

GBA is also trailing the original GB by over 40 million units, or around 35%, GBA's shorter lifespan being due to tougher competition.

But they didn't lose the market at all, so that matters little. In fact, because they dominated the market so much, they could get away with the GBA in the first-place.

Read my post to tongue_of_colicab, before the one you are quoting.

@Sis: Sony only announced that their maximum capacity would be around 1.2million PS3's per month. That would put them at a maximum production this year of 14.4 million PS3s. I don't think they will quite reach that figure, with production slowing down once or twice for cost-reduction implementations, so I'm thinking they will produce about 12 million. Of course, should the PS3 become a runaway success earlier than expected, they may try to ramp up production. But for now, I'm assuming that Sony has a long term plan in place and doesn't really expect to sell that many more in the first year.

What I'm saying is that there are enough 1st/2nd party titles to serve as differentiation. I don't think that they alone combine to create 'killer app' levels of purchase enticement (on the whole), but I also don't think the PS3 is at risk of losing 3rd party development; IMO it will still have all the mass market titles. The risk is in losing 3rd party *exclusives*, which does suck for Sony, but is not a deathblow in and of itself

Might not be a death blow but it would keep them from getting that 70%+ market share they enjoyed last time around. Also if those 3rd party games are half ass ports like many have been so far that is also going to also hurt sony's image. I think sony for now is fine with 3rd party support but if sales keep like they are I could imagine some 3rd parties just skipping the PS3 because it is not worth their time like many did the xbox and gamecube.

Sony has a major up hill battle in the months a head. I can not think of to many times were a platform was being out performed this badly and came back to win.

PS2 had backwards-compatibility and was thus a suitable upgrade from the predecessor, allowing a smooth and easy generational transition without throwing all your old games out of the window. No other console offered that.
You should maybe factor this into the reasons why that particular exception to the rule came to pass.

By the way, it has been reported here that by late last week, 44.000 out of 50.000 pre-order slots had been filled in the Benelux (the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxemburg, 27,5 million inhabitants total). Looking in the shops here I wouldn't have guessed (all I walked into still have preorders available), but I'm in a small, out of reach province these days, so that may not be reliable, and I was actually expecting not to have to look too hard to find one in the shops in this area from the 23rd onwards over here. You just have to know where to look.

Anyway, will be interesting to see how many get sold this month and the next. I expect some countries to do really well, but other countries maybe not so much.

Well for sure you dont have to worry about the first month. The second month will probably be decent too but I expect sales to drop after that, just as in the US and Japan. But we probably wont know for sure since there hardly ever are any sales numbers for the EU.

Entertaining...

Some of the posts over the past 7 pages are hillarious. Some spinsters are just too much on this board. The summer edition of the 2010 market prediction poll should be "interesting" to say the least.

When is the PS3 EU launch date?

Xbox 360 is "not performing well" anywhere in Europe except for UK, according to Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime.

When asked how the Wii was doing compared to competition, Reggie told mercurynews.com: "Well, there's no PS3 yet ... 360 is selling well only in one country: UK. Across the rest of Europe, it is not performing well."

He goes on to state: "Wii, on the other hand, is selling exceptionally well all through Europe."

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=160234&skip=yes

So anyone wants to count up US/Jap sales and see actually how much MS sold in europe untill now?

By the way, it has been reported here that by late last week, 44.000 out of 50.000 pre-order slots had been filled in the Benelux (the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxemburg, 27,5 million inhabitants total). Looking in the shops here I wouldn't have guessed...

I'm not sure who came up with that story, but it's obviously not true. PS3's aplenty over here.

The Wii however is still nowhere to be found; 'Try again in three weeks sir.'. Incredible.
