NPD December 2007

I'm not talking about targeting a market in terms of, "We're only going to make games that appeal to US gamers" I'm talking about making a game that may or may not have appeal period.

If things were that simple.

You don´t have to answer, I´ve made the points I wanted to make and will stop here.

Well it has to come out eventually. You could play this game forever.

There's no game. There's my belief that KZ2 has a decent chance of missing 08, and your belief (or should I say hope?) that it does not.

I really don't care when KZ comes out, though I suppose it would be nice if I could pick up a PS3 next xmas and KZ would be available right away. So on a personal level I would hope it doesn't slip.

Hope? I'm just stating what was on Threespeech. I'm not sure why you're getting so defensive about this. I'm supposed to take your guess above Sony's semi-official blog?

Anyway, I expect the game to make an impact. If Insomniac can deliver Resistance 2 by the end of this year, I'm sure GG will be expected to deliver aswell, even if KZ2 does 'have better graphics'.

Just watch, the Wii will end up like Monopoly, the board game. I might pull it out of the closet 2-3 times a year, but I still have it. Surely people will play their Wii more than that, but that is the gist of it. Wii Sports is the impetus to getting the Wii into the room and it is doing a wonderful job as of now.

Good analogy.

Have people over for dinner, pull out the Wii as a party game.

Easy pick up and play, nobody cares how shallow Wii Sports is.

Unless your new to next gen gaming, you probably know that delays are the name of the game. An official release date doesn't really mean that much nowadays.

And I'm not getting defensive, it's you who took issue with my off hand comment that I'd be impressed if KZ2 drops this year. It seems an extremely ambitious project, with tremendous expectations, and with the amount of delays I've seen so far, I have a feeling this one is not going to be shipping in 8 months.

Yeah, it means all content has to be finished in 5 months, which sounds quite insane.

Possibly. I guess it depends on how far you think they were at E3. Did they really only have the content finished for that one demonstration level? Or was that just the only level they were ready to show? That's the big question there. I'm personally thinking this last part of the development cycle is mostly online stuff, but I have no way to be sure, so we'll just have to wait and see.

Even the level wasn't finished IMHO, there were bugs in it like light flares shining through objects.

Also, just look at recent game releases, has any title made its original date without any delays? The two nextgen titles we've created stuff for have both been pushed back several months... The only one I can remember right now is Halo3 and it hasn't got a release date until just a few months before it was done. I'd expect KZ to slip 3-6 months just as well.

I thought it had already slipped.

Light flares shining through objects, do you think those are art bugs, design bugs, or engine bugs? Do you think they will be working on one level and get it completely perfect, and only then start working on the next? I've never worked in the industry, but I simply cannot believe that's how it works.

On a little side note: why is kz2 so hyped anyway? kz1 wasnt anything special either and I dont get the feeling it will be very different for kz2. Lots of focus on the gfx but not alot on the actual game.

Anyway, I dont pay to much attention to release dates anymore. For years its basically if they schedule something for 200x its almost a safe bet you will actually get it one year later.

kz liberation was a good game. and the hype comes from fans/media obsessing over the CG trailer. then the hype really built up after seeing the actual game footage. i think the main complaints with the first kz, were the bugs and the framerate... but other than that, it was an ok game. i think GG will learn from their mistakes.

Slightly OT...but yeah one of the devs was saying that they hope to have a multiplayer beta available early this year.

Whatever it is, they haven't had the time to fix them for their demo level, so it probably was a usual E3 rush to get something to show. It suggests that they haven't had a lot of content to choose from at that time. Completing the rest of the game in less then 14-15 months would be a very tight schedule. It can be done though but I'd rather not see the game suffer for it...

I'm not that familiar with FPS level design, but it's reasonable to assume that they can't completely paralelize the process, as a single person is just not enough to work on a level any more. Games need more than a dozen levels and so it's impossible to have separate teams for each one. They're probably working on a few in paralel, and they do have artists on some and level designers on others.

Of course they'll get back to each level several times as their technology and methods advance, but it's jost not possible to keep working on all the levels in paralel until the end.

And I still don't have the full Top 20 for December, but I have part of it. Here's what I have so far:

December 2007:

1 (1) WII - Super Mario Galaxy
2 (5) WII - Wii Play
3 (3) 360 - Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
4 (4) 360 - Assassin's Creed
5 (10) 360 - Halo 3
6
7
8
9 (18.) DS - New Super Mario Bros.
10 (8.) PS3 - Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

Seems to be very similar to US numbers for 2007 all up, though Wii Play took top spot - not hugely surprising to me since it's something I'd guess most Wii owners would pick up given the value. No PS3 or PSP titles cracked the 2007 top 20 :???:

There are a few more December slots in the December rankings at the link, but no comprehensive list as of yet, just odds and sods.

Think Insomniac. :) In fact, R&C was released one week earlier in some areas. I think Uncharted was released on schedule too, but I am not sure anymore (What about Folklore, AC, CoD4 ?).

It's not surprising that wii play did better relatively in Canada. I'd also expect that the ps3 is closer to the 360 in december hardware numbers as MS hasn't pushed the price of the 360 down to $349 in Canada.

Exactly. I have been saying something similar to that for quite some time, comparing Wii with a board game in general. And after actually buying one my opinion is even more strong on the matter. Extremely nice party machine, easy controls and Wii sport is the pinnacle of the pick up and play games but apart from at somne parties and stuff the console is not getting too much use.

I have to buy Zelda though, after all the years of hearing how it is the best adventure games out there I have to give it a try. I just hope that in the future not all the games will turn to pick me up party games...

It's true. But it also has some strong single player titles, me and my gf have probably spent 15 hours or so playing Mario Galaxy start to finish, now we're starting on Zack and Wiki.

So, I think in general what you're saying is true, if we're talking about teh majority of users. But it does have some good non-party functionality.

Matt Cassamania(sp?) from IGN has said Wii software sales outsold 360 in December...anyone have anything to back that up?

If you count Wii Sports and Wii Play.

If you do a comparison of 3rd party, it's extremely lopsided for 360.

360 is selling as much 3rd party software as PS3 and Wii combined.
