Non-photo realistic rendering?

In the immortal words of Richard Donner on the Superman movie set. "be real not realistic"
"Verisimilitude" seems to be making a big comeback in language (though from the look of his work, I don't think Brian Singer really "got" what it meant).

To amend your quote with my own belief, "if not realistic, then be believably fantastic." I'll refer to Mario Sunshine again in how they built fully realized worlds with characters having homes, and vacation resorts, and theme parks, and marketplaces, and all these sorts of things that we can identify with in our own world. This was a big (and largely unrecognized) change from the traditional Mario level design which had illogical and disjointed platforms placed merely for gameplay purposes or random decoration. But most people that didn't care for the game complained that it was "more of the same" or didn't have enough differences from Mario 64. I will never understand how they could feel that way, especially with the integrated "Secret" levels basically following that old style of platform challenge in worlds that starkly contrast the normal levels, and mimic the traditional non-utilitarian Mario levels.

I see what your getting at but I think the first Metroid Prime did a better job of that. Here was a world in which people had lived and existed and had a realistic theme, but still had variety. In SMS it was all Island all the time.
