Pre-E3 2005: Breaking: Revolution Details
Sleek system to play standard DVDs, says Nintendo. More inside.
by Matt Casamassina

May 12, 2005 - The Electronics Entertainment Expo 2005 is still days away, but that hasn't stopped Microsoft from debuting its Xbox 360 console on MTV. And now Nintendo has followed suit, revealing some new meaty details about its next-generation console, codenamed Revolution.

Nintendo of America's vice president of corporate affairs Perrin Kaplan describes the console as "very, very sleek." The system, which is reportedly tiny, will stand horizontally. Its width will reportedly be no more than three DVD cases stacked flatly on each other, or slightly more than an inch.

Revolution will play standard DVD media this time around. No word yet if the console will be able to play DVD movies.

It will also be able to play high-definition games and go online.

More details to come at E3 2005. Stay tuned.

An inch thick? When you have multi-core CPU's and a top end graphics processor involved? Sounds pretty far-fetched to me. If they pull it off, I'd be mighty impressed.

Stand horizontally? What exactly does that mean?

Its like when you stand DVD cases horizontally as oppose to vertically.

You know like that Apple mini.

If it's true ragarding the drive, then I guess PS3 would be the only next-gen console to feature next-gen DVD format, huh? Another plus for Sony entering the next-gen, IMO.

MS: Welcome to the HD Era!
Sony: HD Era our ***. Not with non-HD format you won't.

This is the dumbest bullsh*t that I have ever heard of in my life. This this is true then this will be an easy win for Sony. If Sony ends up (and I think they will) putting a blu-ray drive or combo bluray/HD-dvd drive this will easily be the first thing that Sony will exploite against the competition. Nintendo and M$ are pretty stupid. I don't understand. Sony all the way.

Um no its not .

A bluray and hddvd drives cost lots of money even at cost . Instead of putting in a bluray or hd-dvd drive ms and nintendo can put in hardware that will actually help deliver better games .

If bluray is in the ps3 then it will be at the cost of something else . Even if sony is willing to eat 200$ per console something else could have allways been put in instead of it .

A cell processer , next gen nvidia gpu , 512 megs of xdram , bluray drive , hardrive and a sound processer will cost alot of money . More than either the rev or the x360 . There is no reason around that and if ms and nintendo can take a huge chunk of the market it may come back and hurt sony in a big way

jvd honestly has Sony ever released any console or handheld that was overpriced for what you get? The answer is no. Every real person knows this. If Sony gives us *praying that you are right and they do* everything that you just stated I promised that what we will get as consomers will be worth it. I promise you this.

Ehhm, I don't think he was referring to the console being overpriced for the consumer but for Sony themselves. If they are losing a ton of money on the console by trying to push a new format, well there is certainly some risk involved. It gives Microsoft and Nintendo more room to competitively price their consoles.
Bluray might be nice but as a consumer, well I am not seeing too many movies out on bluray discs, so unless that changes the only thing I will actually be buying that uses those bluray discs are games. Which is to say that the games will actually have to take advantage of the advantages of bluray for me to care about bluray.

* Which isn't to downplay Bluray, just trying to point out some things...

This is assuming Nintendo doesn't instead keep the money themselves and/or come in at a lower price point.

Absolutely true, nothing is free.

So you guys, very smart might I add are telling me that it might be a good idea to NOT put the next-gen media i.e. blu-ray or a combo in the next-gen system Sony will probably name PS3.

I have to be living in bazaro world. Or in crazy land. Do you get it? Next-Gen consoles need next-gen media.

Why? Make a point, don't be insulting. I don't see it as a MUST, I see it as a nice to have. The cube didn't suffer terribly from lower-volume discs, and that didn't come out too long ago.

I don't see the point in bluray or hddvd right now for games they will be using maybe 10% of the disc space and there are no movies out now that support either format and probally won't be untill after the ps3 comes out

dvd's were out before this gen consoles and the big pay off was that you could get a game system that plays dvd for $300 instead of buying a dvd player for $150, it was a better deal

and something off topic how much space would a 2 hour hd movie take if it's 8.5GB or less they could put the movie on one disc and features on an other and just have to put out new players

Ohh they didn't did they. Hmmm with no disrepect to the Nintendo fanbase but M$ did come out in its first gen and beat Nintendo as far as systems sold. If you were able to view movies on the GC I think that would have pushed the console past the Xbox. Nintendo sometimes places themselves to lose, just to be original. Sometimes doing what others do is a good thing.

Look at the fact that Nintendo didn't follow the world with online play. Now we can look back and say "oh yeah that did hurt the GC, thus why they are pushing it next-gen". Trust me movie play back and online play would have pushed the GC past Xbox but hey Nintendo is Nintendo. What can I say.

I can't believe that smart, thoughtful, and informed people here at beyond3d can say things like this. I totally respect your feelings but isn't this a NEXT-GEN console. Did you know that games were made on CDs when the PS2 was first sold, thus the purple backside. Games will grow as time go on. That the Xbox 1.5 thinking in you pegisys. 1.5 is not what I want, I want whole numbers baby. Give me something that in 3 years I won't regret buying.

Who wants to buy a $300 console just to buy a $500 dollar Next-Gen media player to watch HD movies on. Come on guys please lets think logically here.
