So gamecube has a hardware to software attach rate of
1 : 8.45

GBA is 1 : 4.02

And DS is 1 : 2.

If we say the average gamecube game sells for $40, then that's $6,251,600,000 worth of gamecube games.

If the average GBA game sells for $30, then that's $8,050,800,000 worth of GBA games.

And if the average DS game sells for $30 as well, then that's $314,700,000 worth of DS games.

I'd say nintendo has most likely made at least about as much off of gamecube as gba, if not slightly more.

What amuses me about above is when people get hung up about hardware sales only.

Tie ratio for software sales above means even more especially to a company like Nintendo who have little 3rd party support.

What's the point of selling a console @ close to production cost if you fail to sell software for it.

Has anyone got any stats for Sony or MS sales for a comparison?

I hope this disproves some of the nay sayers who say Nintendo's recent profits somehow isn't related to their core business ie selling games & hardware and is only due to favorable currency!

Nintendo must have had money already there to be able to capitalise.

How many titles will Sony release to support admittedly superior PSP?

I don't know the situation for all territories but Japan sales indicate that both DS hardware & software sales have outsold PSP. Especially true regarding game sold!

Success can only be achievable by selling software not by selling hardware alone.

Even MS are learning this the hard way. They sell XBOX @ a lost yet have no 1st party games of any repute bar Halo. A title also available on PC.

As far as I'm concerned Xbox has to compete with PC as well as PS2 & GC. To make things worst PC games undercut Xbox titles and usually come out 1st.

Operating Income or (Loss)
Quarter Nintendo Sony MS
Q1 2003 - $113 ($277)
Q2 2003 $60 $15 ($245)
Q3 2003 $186 $20 ($273)
Q4 2003 $697 $659 ($397)
Q1 2004 $48 ($44) ($209)
Q2 2004 $161 ($27) ($339)
Q3 2004 $203 ($0) ($142)
Q4 2004 $605 $433 $84

Total: Nintendo $1960 Sony $1169 Microsoft (1798)

Microsoft Profits in Bold.

Difference between Microsoft and Nintendo in earnings is 3758 million dollars.

And the latest quarter, another 154 million loss for MS

Total loss is most certainly higher given these numbers doesn't span the entire XBOX life and development

EDIT: Totally screwed up the calculations, just check the quote below :)

There's no question Gamecube was a financial success for Nintendo. What hurt the Gamecube was it wasn't a financial success for 3rd party devs. These days you can't go it alone and not expect to be anything more than a niche player. They've been slowly backing themselves in a corner for awhile now by relying on 20 year old characters to drum up that old retro feeling. You can only do that for so long. The market is aging, and the kids wanna play the violent GTA type games. I have nothing against Nintendo aside from their monopolistic 80's practices. They make quality games but they only release a couple a year themselves. They seem to be in a position that Apple was in in the early 90's. While they may never go out of business they may have a future of comsetic gimmicks to keep profitable. So much seems to rest on that damn Revolution controller. Which is very exciting. It could be abother Virtual Boy or it could catapult them to No.1!

Well that article reflects pretty clearly what myself and some others have been saying for awhile, so my thoughts on it are 'two thumbs up.'
