Nintendo: Innovation is dying/FREE old Games

where are the virtual boy games ?

Unplayable unless you have two retina burning screens.

However, they're porting them to the DS and you can just turn it sideways and hold it close to your face.

The status of the download service was clarified in this statement from Perrin Kaplan, which PGC obtained from Nintendo of America today:

"For Revolution and accessing older games, we haven't finalized how we will structure it yet. It is possible that players will enjoy these games without a charge from Nintendo, or there may be some pay structure for accessing the actual product. We haven't finalized it yet. Our goal is to make it as easy and inexpensive as possible, which could be free."

Perrin Kaplan is a source of bad information lately. She's never been particularly good at what she does, but these days, she's simply a burden Nintendo should lose immediately. :?

I hope its a pay to own type of structure, where you pay for the software (Game) which you pay ONLY for the game and no type of subscription plan (Pay $5 a month to have limitless access to ONLY the Nintendo First Party games). I think its to troublesome to pay a monthly subscription or any type of recurring fee. It goes without saying that Nintendo hasn't stated that this will happen...but i'm just pointing out what I hope will happen and what I hope will NOT happen....

I see; but I would love to see some games to come with the console/box or do a promo where you can download SOME of the games of your choice for free! Then, do ala i-tunes where you charge players a dollar for a game!

I'd expect 'Pay per Play' as this looks like one of the best finacial models for futures distributed media. Or at least, a $0.5/1 Pay per Play option alongside purchases and/or subscriptions. I might play MarioKart once every few months with friends where a $1 payment is much better than $10 up front.

And seeing the price of old games on GB, Nintendo aren't shy of charging top dollar for old software!

I think a cheap subscription model would be great for Nintendo.

I think the average attatch rate is like 8 games per console. I am guessing 50% of those come when games hit under $30. And Of course Nintendo's profits off those 8 games is no where near the $50 retailers charge, even on 1st party titles.

But lets say the service is like $5/mo. That is $60/yr. That is the price of a game. Over a 5 year generation, that basically is 6 retail games from that consumer. Which of course is more like 10-15 in a profit scenario.

Of course a credits system may work out well too. Sell "Gaming DL Cards" at Walmart or whereever. $1 gets you a game for a month or something like that.

There are a lot of paradigms Nintendo could go with this. As long as it is cheap I do not think it will be a big issue. And Nintendo can give gsamers free credits/months at the get go also, so that could be a plus at Piont of Sale.

Personaly i rather pay for them .

That way i can download them to my system and have them forever. I figure the rev hardware should last for a good 15 years or so (judging by my nes ) .

How about the chances of Nintendo teaming up with Sega to provide their titles on Revolution as well?

Technically the emulation of all Sega platforms should be possible, there is an official Sega Saturn emulator for pc, and I think Dreamcast could be emulated on Revolution (although I think those games are just too big, the same goes for Saturn). This would be my wildest dream come true. :)

In fact, Nintendo and Sega could both benefit from this. Sega could get the cash for their titles, Nintendo the added value for the expanded catalogue they'd get by doing this. Nintendo Revolution would sell like mad.

And what about expanding the network to the release of new titles (indie,...) via Revolution's online system? I truly hope they'll release a HDD somewhere in the future... Also, I want Revolution to emulate/support Neo-Geo/PC Engine, Atari, GB, GBA,... as well :p

Or maybe Sony or MS will make a deal with Sega and steal Nintendo's thunder? And with a 20GB HDD, an Xbox could do Master System, Genesis, and SS games.

The downsides, of course, is

1. Gametime. Playing old cheap games stops gamers from going out and buying new expensive games... and thus
2. Profits. Nintendo is leveraging their own times to make them money, so gamers who buy old games are still making Nintendo quick cash. MS/Sony doing this would be an assault on their bottom lines as they probably would not be making a very big cut on the games, at least not enough to justify the dent in new game sales.

You have a point there, but I doub Microsoft and Sony will take BC further than their own systems. Partnering with Sega would be a nice move, ditto Neo-Geo CD/MVS/AVS/PC-Engine/Wonderswan/NG-P/... (play WS/NGPC games on GBA2!), but somewhere I think this will never happen. One can hope of course. ;)

I would much rather have a subscription based system than a pay-to-play or pay-to-own type system. That way, you wouldn't have to pay for a game only to find out you don't like it. You could try all the games you want for as long as you want. With so many games available, I'd rather just pay one flat fee per month and get unlimited access to which ever games I feel like.

Well hopefully someone will figure out how to install some apps on the 360 harddrive,

Then it will just be a matter of installing the NES or SNES emulator, and downloading the ROMS from Kazaa or whatever. You can download like 700NES games in one zip file. They have many GBA games too.

Genesis games are very hard to find though, same with N64.

On my current XBOX I have all the old NES games, and about 150 SNES games, it's pretty cool to go back to the old times with the buddies once in a while. Although, Super Mario will never feel right with anythign except a square 2 button controller!

I would just get an Emulator for you PC and download the game you want to play, play it on your PC....if you like it...then pay the fee to play it on the Revolution...at least that what i'm going to do :p

Nah, genesis games are pretty easy to find, I don't believe sega cracks down on emulation.

Oh, and hope nintendo doesn't cannabalize their new game sales on the rev by making it play old games....hope they have new games on the rev.

And sony and MS won't do backwards compatibility with sega to counter nintendo if they don't consider nintendo a competitor, the fact that nintendo is doing the whole backwards compatibility thing probably emphasizes that for them. You may see an expanded version of xbox live arcade thouogh, and even more rereleased retro classics from various companies.

If they charge a fee for gamers to buy and own the file, then there must be some DRM to go with it otherwise I can see millions of people just copying the files instead of buying them.

The DC had official MD and PCE game emulation service for awhile IIRC so I could see the same thing happening with Revolution.
