Nintendo GOing Forward.

Actually, the Wii U userbase is a pretty bad target for Nintendo, since it's so small.
Well, evidently at least 40 million of the 50 million strong 3ds userbase didn't buy a wii u either, so you could say Nintendo wants to make it an a more compelling choice for them over just sticking to smartphones/tablets as well. All speculative of course.

No financial gain. Wuu has one year of effective life left to it, tops. A major re-engineering of a hugely unsuccessful platform (essentially rebuilding it all over from scratch) isn't going to re-coup its costs. Most of the sales the Wuu will see have already been made. Shrinking it down isn't going to change anything, sales-wise.

Also, most people would probably feel uncomfortable gaming on a fat giant tablet with a HDMI cable running across their lap and all over the floor over to the TV. :p

not to mention almost any AMD APU at this point would be more powerful and feature newer hardware tech than the wiiu.

A 8 core puma with a 4CU/256 SP set up and get in under the wii u power draw

Porblem with that is you kill back compatibilty. A beefed up version of latte at 28nm with double the number of sp's should be able to be passively cooled, plus say around 4 espresso cores clocked at 1.6ghz would at least be able to run project cars at 720p/30fps which is all you need in a handheld.

No, you need substantially more than that in handhelds. Typical tablets run 2K resolution screens.

Well, obviously, a hypothetical Nintendo handheld would have a SD-class resolution display, since that is what the company feel familiar and comfortable with... ;)

do they actually run the game in that resolution ?

I just got a note 5 with a quad hd screen but I've only played simple games on it. I haven't seen anything like Mario kart or super smash running at 2k on it.

QHD and higher in phones is all about the fidelity, especially for languages like Korean. For games, you need a res that works on tablets as well as tiny phone screens. You certainly run 1080p as lower on a decent sized tablet is blurry. And 60 fps is a must for a Nintendo machine.

PSVita's 960x544 on a 5" screen definitely isn't up to snuff. 720p at 5" with a native higher res UI might be okay, but I'd be targeting 1080p now if not least for software portability to other TV enabled devices.

I've recently brought a P8 lite with a 5" screen at 720p. I don't know if its due to antialiasing or chemical trails or aliens, but looking hard at text I can't see a single pixel, and even if I can see them, they are good persons I have no problem with them.
In normail use with casual games I've never thinked about it, for Nintendo's standard is even overkill.

yea but why run it at the higher resolution and not just run at a lower resolution and upscale ? 720p upscaled to 1080p on a 5inch screen wont really be all that noticeable unless you have it strapped to your head ala gear vr.

Imo there is nothing wrong with the psv display especially the first one, it offers higher ppi than most gaming setup.
It will surprise me if Nintendo makes the jump all the way to 720p
I hope Nintendo comes to same conclusion as Amazon with their last kindle wrt resolution: it is secondary to lot of others considerations.

to be honest , I would rather have Nintendo come out with something similar to the vita in power (maybe a snug more powerful ) 6 inch screen but I want a good 8 hours or so of gaming life.

It's worth noting that even the unreleased 4k Xperia Z5 Premium smartphone only displays 4k content on photos and videos. Even the OS side is displayed in 1080p. Obviously it won't be playing 4k games anytime soon.

If Nintendo do go for a hybrid handheld/console, it'd be daft to put a screen with a resolution higher than 1080p, probably best to stick with 720p and have some better visuals.

Edit: I'd much rather they went for a pure mains powered console and did try and compete with the big boys on power, but that's just me.

There are great 720 & 1080 stereoscopic screens. Would be nice...
Amusingly the games I'm interested in are exclusive to other plaftorms, since having a PC means already having most titles available in better quality...

It's not just you.
It's everyone who would like to have Nintendo games and all the great AAA cross-platform games with competing visuals in the same console.

Ninty making an uncharacteristically powerful new console, won't magically gain them third party support. They'll actually have actively get out there and do what Sony and MS do to win publisher confidence and convince them that Nintendo actually cares about any other company other than themselves making money on their box.

E.g. even if the NX is a 2TF beast, I'm pretty sure Take-two won't be making their next GTA game on it.

Nintendo needs to work on multiple fronts in order to maximize the potential of any new system. Working on 3rd party relations and hiring people to write development tools that are ready from the gate would do wonders for support. Having a powerful system that can entice new buyers would be of major benefit as well. Growing up or funding mature themed games from a new wholly owned publisher (so Ninty's reputation isn't tarnished) would go a long in attracting new buyers. Having online competent infrastructure is important. This has all been covered and is largely a pipe dream at this point. If any company is capable of making a comeback in this market place it's Nintendo; but if any company is likely to falter due to being stubborn to market realities it's Nintendo.
