Nintendo and Microsoft marketing strategies

I don't work Microsoft or Nintendo but I think both of them played sony when they found that the PS3 was going to be expensive to develop for, biuld and sell.

Microsoft came early immitating sony releasing the PS2 early and getting development support first. This time advantage gave us GeoW when the PS3 came out. In an interview with Gearbox they sad that to get the optimum yields out of PS3 will take 5 years while it will be very quick for Wii.Do we have to wait 5 until PS3 can compete with a more established 360? Alot of publishers didn't want to commit to being exclusive to the more expensive
PS3 platform.I mean come on how practical is that.

Nintendo found out with GC that selling a console exclusively for hardcore gamers (thier base) is not going to work because sony has that market on lock now(Even though they are losing the pop hardcore market to Microsoft by making it impractical to develop for PS3).So they started the DS experiment...and made another NES-like golden egg. They found that marketing to working people with little time to commit to learning complex strats to be good(Example:Streetfighter 3: 3S) games, older gamers (35+) and families and people that haven't played games enough to work a 15 button controller(or be intimidated by it). They marketed it as a "easy to pick up and play" console.I think the when the Wii2 may come out as soon as PS3 matures and they can make it more powerful than PS3(price of a 970GX in 2010? ) but still sell the Wii at a price drop to $99.

I think they all were risking thier lively hood but Sony guessed wrong and Nintendo and Microsoft capitalized on the opportunity.

PS3 hardly anymore, if any actually, than the Xbox 360 is to develop for. Slightly easier maybe because of tools, but that does not make it cheaper.

Time = money

Cell + 256mb of seperate ram + a striped down 7800 = a pain in the ass to code for.

So you haven't seen Resistance? A launch game that's given GOW a run for it's money? Not to say it's better, but reading some of the comparison reviews, you can see that it's doing more things right than wrong. Plus I don't think the Wii is anything special IRT it's technical prowess, hence the ease of milking its resources dry (if that Gearbox guy is to be believed).

Sure. The 100+ games currently in development says "hello". ;) Bro, this is nothing new. Every gen, you'll get complaints about this and that. Remember the PS3's older brother? That thing was apparently almost impossible to code for, then came MGS2, MGS3, God of War, SotC etc etc. I personally think that SONY has enough firepower in its WWS setup (and hopefully with more studios to come) to really satisfy most genres of the market. I know most haven't really proven themselves, but I trust that SONY will push for quality this time, instead on settling for mediocre releases (remember KZ) -- fingers crossed!

Sure, but so is three cores and Xenos. The PS3 might be more expensive, but not some huge amount. They're very similar in cost and both are mighty expensive. The biggest savings on the Xbox 360 is its development tools and not because its hardware is so much more simple to use.

You would think one of the primary functions of great development tools is to, in fact, make the hardware easier or more simple to use.

Sony's big problem is ironically: Dev support. I feel that they will get their cost/supply issues resolved in 2007 and will be able to compete with X360, but they have a large games library deficit. I mean Resistance is a good game, but it can't really stand up to the likes of Gears of War, Forza 2, Lost Planet, and Crackdown all arriving by Q1 2007.

Heavenly Sword and Motorstorm will help a lot, but I still think that these unknown quantities will not have a huge impact on the perception that Sony is lacking games.

Ironically enough, MS might have 3 great Japanese RPGs out in the US before FFXIII even ships on PS3 (Blue Dragon, Eternal Sonata, and Lost Odysee). Halo 3 and a truly next-gen Splinter Cell are coming to compete against MGS4 (no contest IMO) which might not even be exclusive anymore.

Not to mention the fact that X360 will be the cheapest way to get your GTAIV and Assassin's Creed fix this year.

Then Bioshock, Mass Effect, Too Human (still potential there), Banjo Kazooie... I mean MS is really bringing out the games this year. It's going to be insanse trying to keep up with the AAA titles.

PS3 is a year behind in hardware deliveries, but they're two years behind in software IMO.

Exactly. Its not the actual hardware that makes the 360 so easy to develop for, the tools and support go a very long way. I'm willing to bet that if Sony was on Microsoft's level in this regard we'd hear a lot different remarks about which is easier to develop for.

I think you are way too pessimistic regarding the PS3 ;)
