Ni No Kuni: The Another World

Yeah VC l;looks great but could do with some AA. Though I think some of the other Anime inspired games like Naruto and the Atelier games deserve some mention as being up their in cell shading quality as well.

Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm is pretty cool, and looks very authentic ! My memory may fail me here but I remember seeing lots of jaggies in that game. Nonetheless, the combat and environment stay true to the manga. I like the visual a lot, exactly like an anime.

The Atelier games do look more refined and beautiful, partly due to the fine art style.

I love Valkyria's sketch + watercolor look too. Would be even better if the sketch lines are a little more dynamic.

Ni No Kuni DS has a touch-based spell book ? The PS3 version seems to be missing the book.

Sorry, I do believe this game will be really nice.
But about the graphics: I didn't see any character showing any emotion. I think this is because of the game was supposed to be a nintendo DS title, so they resolution would kill/nullify any emotion anyway unless it was in extreme closeup. This might also be why the eyes are not animated.

compare this game to the wind waker and you see a difference between night and day.

The eyes are animated. They show emotion. I don't know what you are going on about.

First point, do you agree that in stills, pretty much every frame of this game on PS3 looks like a proper film and not a computer game, versus some frames of the other games you compared to?

Second point, the eyes do animate! Have you watched the off-screen gameplay clip? They are blinking merrily. The boy doesn't seem overly emotional, but the game overall is no more or less emotive than other games.

There are certainly no limitations imposed by the DS version as that uses a static 2D art for the faces during coversations.

There are clearly areas that can be improved, but so far I've not seen a game more like an anime movie than this. Although SF4 is pretty amazing shading.!

I meant the eyes themselves are not animated, my apologies for not stating this. Yes they blink but I can never tell which direction they are looking in, as opposed to the other games that were mentioned (naruto like you said is really impressive indeed) but anyway, here is an example:

typical Ghibli; it's really simple yet is has a certain charm etc.

while this is from the game:

the shading is rather incorrect also; Ghibli art never has shadows across the face like that.

this looks a little better (in still frame)

but again, in Ghibli animation, the eyes (iris) move a lot, and change shape to express emotion, this is why to me, in motion, the PS3 game looks like it has a robot version of a Ghibli character running around. But as the game is probably still in development, this might change.

To give you an idea of what is possible (not the same art style though!):

You're right about the eyes at points. There's a clip I've seen where the protagonist talks to a boy sitting on a wall, and the boy doesn't look at the protagonist, which is plain wrong. He stares straight ahead. I'm hoping that gets fixed come release though - the demo was this time last year.

Ah ! Rogue Galaxy looked awesome , but never got to play it as it was never available here ! I even used its trailer once to make a whole presentation on toon techniques in 3D and how we could achieve an authentic but unique look rather then just using a toon shader.

 WindWaker. Bright, saturated colors. Zelda's big eyes is very expressive during dialogue and cutscenes. Sometimes he'd focus on various points of interests while walking. But it is possible to find scenes where he stares blankly too. The NPCs' faces may also appear monotonous (look straight ahead) but I think artists generally compensate by animating the entire body.

I think the choice of camera angle in every scene is important too. e.g., When you're walking and the camera is behind the main character, all you see is the back of his head. ^_^

Oh My God ! Couldn't understand a thing but it looks so beautiful ! Not as beautiful as a ghibli film though, but very beaituful noetheless ! I want :p !!!

^Thankfully that's not really such a big deal thanks to the missing region lock. Heck, at the moment you should import your stuff as a European regardless if the game gets a worldwide release or not. The savings are rather substantial.
