Glad we don't have to deal with hard drives any more (and the people claiming it will never happen).

    PS4 BC, PSVR compatible
give me all my PS4 VR titles supersampling from 4K and good AA hmmmmm
This console should be able to bring RDR2 quality or even better into VR.

I'm guessing Sony is about to really start sending out devkits and real leaks will happen so might as well get a head of it.

But it didn't expect to see it come out like this, so random. But at the same time, this will not really register in the mainstream, but will satisfy the core audience that's already there and waiting for the news.

Zen2 has tons of PCIe lanes, so they could just be using more of them then is typical (x8?)

Edit: Even that wouldn't be necessary. PCIe 3.0 x4 goes up to 3.94GB/s.

common man, don't be like that. you know the difference between hardware support and software support.

Regarding the audio... It would really be Peak Sony to support ray tracing to image audio from all directions, and yet only support a 'proprietary' Sony format to output that 3D sound, not Dolby Atmos/dtsX.

    Peak Sony, I tell you.

I think so too. But without really knowing if the code has been altered it's hard to tell what the BC strategy is, or the depth of it. For now I'll call it BC. But I think official statements will help clarify this one.

    Just read the wired article.
Wonder what exactly the RT is all about.
I did raise the question here before if it could be used for object based audio and AI, which he seems to be implying.
It could be optimizations to CU's to allow tracing to be done a bit more efficiently in compute, rather than RT cores.

Zen 2, 8 core was also confirmed.
Core count was the only detail other than general uarch that it's based on. Nice their talking though.
I couldve easily seen them being quite for a very long time, even with just this amount of info.

    Edit:
Also ps4 BC finally confirmed, which expected but is nice they finally said it.

The SSD isn't a surprise and I'll say I called it. "I know it’s impossible, but can we have an SSD?" said every dev ever because it changes the fundamental way you can access data. Interestingly though, it sounds like Sony have gone very specialist which I think smart. I expect it to be smaller if it's that much faster as they claim. I think faster SSD and more medium level RAM is probably the better balance for game worlds (not visuals) than slower storage, faster RAM.

As for hardware RT support, we need to wait and see how exactly and what sort of performance it's getting. Very nice to hear that it's being included for flexibility though, not just graphics. And it should tie in with the 3D audio too, which is very exciting. My surround headphones definitely give me an edge in Apex Legends.

So... DXR support on Pascal GPUs is what exactly? Hardware or Software?

I’d say it comes down to physical area and pJ/bit. If PCIe 4.0 is superior on those, why not use it?

    Mama Su didn’t wait long

software, it doesn't support fixed function units. I'm following convention here.

To be fair not really detailed any specs apart from 8 core and some form of ssd.
If it was just a leak we would be saying mostly buzz words with zen and navi thrown in which was expected.

Interesting claims about fastest SSD, but it certainly could be done if they wish to achieve this. Pcie4 + custom nand controler( no off-the-shelf part curently build like that) + software stack optimised for expected tasks, even moreso if bolted on motheboard further reducing latency etc.

Right, so not to get too excited (and not a debbie downer), the raw data we have is simply support for RT while the article also spends more time discussing audio and SSD.
