2.2 - Inside the Next-Generation Game Machines
Wednesday, May 12, 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM
Room 406AB
The movie-like graphics, the smooth movements of a game’s lead character, the level of detail in the game’s environments, the vibrant colors and subtle shadows, even the rich and absorbing audio tracks all flow from the combined power of a console’s graphics and processing chips. The current generation consoles and PC have already moved the technology of games substantially ahead of the previous generation’s. As one generation comes to a close, questions about the beginning of the next generation of consoles and PC becomes more compelling. This session will assemble the chip-makers and technology providers who have major roles in the development of the game industry’s next generation consoles and ask them to explain their technologies and discuss how the next generation consoles and PCs will differ from today’s. Learn and understand the capabilities of the machines that will lead the next wave of interactive entertainment.
Moderator: Mark DeLoura, Manager of Developer Relations - Sony Computer Entertainment America
Panelists: Scott Cronce, Chief Technology Officer - Electronic Arts
Laura Fryer, Director, Advanced Technology Group - Microsoft
James Kahle, IBM Fellow - IBM
Andrew Thompson, Director of Advanced Technology Marketing - ATI

It has begun, the Broadband Engine project is over, development ended this month. The specs will be revealed any day now.

Um, where do you get that idea. Mark isn't exactly a very senior person at Sony, and I have a feeling that these three people...

Laura Fryer, Director, Advanced Technology Group - Microsoft
James Kahle, IBM Fellow - IBM
Andrew Thompson, Director of Advanced Technology Marketing - ATI

...Are probably there for xbox 2 related presentations.

James Kahle
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IBM Fellow. Chief architect and technical leader in the CELL project. Before, he was one of the key designers of RIOS I and heavily involved in defininig the [create PowerPC] architecture as well as creating the first gigahertz 64-bit processor (the GigaProcessor)

Um, where do you get that idea.

Toshiba says Broadband Engine, the Teraflops MPU project between SCE and Toshiba ends this month, development ends.

and I have a feeling that these three people...

...Are probably there for xbox 2 related presentations.

And I have a feeling you have no idea what you are talking about.

James Kahle is the lead architect of the Cell architecture and has been working on it since 2000, he has several patents listed under his name. Go look it up sometime, but let me guess he is there for Xbox 2? Don't make me laugh, maybe in your fantasy world the PS3 is years away but the reality is that it will be out in the same time period as the others.

Inside the Next-Generation Game Machines

SCEA wouldn't be there if they weren't going to talk about their next generation machine no?

Paul is banking on a past Sony statement which said they will show some form of Cell to the investors, by the end of this month/end of Sony fiscal year 2003.

He has no idea what will be presented at E3.

Haha no. I'm done with you, go back under your bridge.

Well he has obviously been around a while to be named a "fellow". So I'm sure he's had a hand in all of IBM's processor parts at some point.

James A. Kahle (Technology Group, Austin, Texas) has been a leader in defining, designing and delivering IBM's leading-edge, high-performance Reduced Instruction Set Computing (RISC) microprocessors. Starting as a key designer for the RIOS I processor that launched IBM into the fast-growing marketplace for UNIX workstations and servers, he has continued to lead the definition of IBM's PowerPC architecture employing superscalar, multiscalar and simultaneous multi-threading technologies. His latest and perhaps most significant recent achievement is the GigaProcessor for IBM's p690, also known as "Regatta," which delivers twice the performance of its nearest competitor at half the cost. The GigaProcessor was the industry's first 64-bit microprocessor to cross the one-gigahertz barrier. Currently, Mr. Kahle is chief architect and technical leader for a joint effort between Sony, Toshiba and IBM that is developing a radically new microprocessor chip called "Cell" for the next generation of consumer electronics products.

Know of any other consoles that are using a power PC-ish processor? Like I said, he probably had a hand in a lot of processors IBM has had a part in. Including cell and power PC. If sony was presenting something at GDC about cell, then I'm certain they would send someone more senior thean Mark. Mark goes to GDC each year, he also goes to E3 and IGF as it would make sense for developer relations to go to those events.

Kahle is there to talk about Cell and it's role inside the PS3, let's not delude ourselves here dude.

We're talking about E3?

The subject of the E3 disusion is Inside the Next-Generation Game Machines, not inside the Next-Generation Xbox.

Unless SCEA and Kahle are there to talk about Xbox2? Come on now...

Whoops, i meant E3.

Unless SCEA and Kahle are there to talk about Xbox2? Come on now...

Well two of the panelists (MS and ATI ) have nothing to do with PS3 so just what do you think those people are going to want to talk about? Out of the 4 you could say THREE of them are involved in some way with xbox 2. Mark is listed as a moderator, and not panelist? well then Kahle probably is specifically talking about PS3 as I'm sure the moderator won't be doign a whole lot of talking.

I guess we shall find out soon enough.

cannot wait. things are just starting to get interesting.

I'll bet we will hear *something* on PS3's Cell processor(s) this month, and more at E3, but I am not saying it'll be a full unvieling like the March 1999 PS2 chipset unvieling....

hang on lads, it's gonna be a BUMPY ride

I dunno I think PS2 will get a big push. This next year should be the high point for this current generation, on all three platforms. I don't expect any specific information on any next-generation consoles before E3 2005.

The company's chip group, responsible for IBM PowerPC and Power server processors, has scheduled a March 31 event at the posh W Hotel in Manhattan to discuss the chips.

IBM executives are expected to talk about a range of Power processors and possibly IBM's chip manufacturing efforts, to help spread the word about the family of processors.

Forthcoming chips, such as the Power 5 and the Cell processor--the joint processor architecture development effort from IBM, Sony and Toshiba--are likely to become topics of discussion, analysts said. New information on some of IBM's existing PowerPC processors may be disclosed as well.

Sorry if already posted.

I think that MS Xbox talks at GDC have been planned to steal the thunder from the planned conference of IBM at the end of the month. Maybe, just maybe, because Sony might follow with something.

Well, case closed :D

Peter Hofstee will be doing a presentation on the Cell processor at the end of June, E3 might not be the venue Sony chooses to reveal anything ... but what other events are there between now and then?

Cant wait to hear real information, so tired of psychos in here claiming they have PS3 specs and the endless number of speculation-driven flamethreads...

Although i feel that the more [eyedrop style] info we get, the worse this forum will become... Just a feeling...
