News & Rumours: Playstation 4/ Orbis *spin*

Yea I remember that Madden promotion. It was pretty far from what we got with all the nice snow and grass and depth of field effects... I think the last Madden for PC was like 2008 or 2009.

That article is purely speculative. And stupid. Why the fuck would Bethesda care about a tiny, 2d, PC only nostalgia project? What possible bearing could it have on their triple A blockbuster?
I must admit I hadn't read it when I published the news. I just saw the headline and after following the link I decided to publish it here.

Very interesting about NBA Live. That series has had many ups and downs... mostly downs (basketball fan here). 2K has taken it to school on several occasions.

The Live series had so many personalities... every year was a different style of game, and that wasn't very much a good thing... after 2005 it just started getting silly...

It may be a good sign it's sticking to next-gen though, hopefully that means they will be putting a lot of work into it being a competent game rather than managing it for multiple platforms.

I also wonder if the sports franchises from EA will become a pivotal point for exclusivity agreements to kick off the coming next-gen.
I have always had a bias towards NBA Live for some reason.

I enjoyed NBA 2k series a lot after NBA 2k6, when NBA Live began to go downhill, but every new version of NBA 2k is more or less the same than the previous games since NBA 2k6.

It feels to me like I am playing the same game over and over again. NBA Live, on the contrary, wasn't that regular but when they got it right -NBA Live 98, 99, 2000 were great for the time-, NBA Live 2004, etc, it was certainly more fun to play than NBA 2k, at least to me.

NBA 2k11 is the pinnacle of the series for NBA 2k, while it is more difficult for me to say a NBA Live which is better than any other iteration of the series.

I used to be a NBA Live guy as well until after 2004 (the main reason I bought Live 2004 was because Vince Carter was on the box, not going to lie... but I enjoyed the game too).

I think up until 2004/2005 Live was steadily getting better, but after they went into the superstar modes and became extremely arcadey I was scared off to try NBA 2K6 on PS2 and I haven't left.

But I'm not a very serious sports videogamer, so the last two NBA games I bought were that 2K6 for PS2 and NBA 2K10 for PC. Their PC versions have been pretty solid and it's fun to see sports games on unnecessarily powerful GPUs to appreciate all the models in replays and such :)

I'm not really partial to 2K though, I only stick with it now because I feel the simulation is more up to par and the overall package seems to be leaner and a smoother experience. Whatever feels better at any time is the one I'll try to play.

I more just wish we had a bit more excitement for sports games in general so there could be a bit more competition in the arena to cover both simulation and arcade. There's so many auto racing games, but so few choices when it comes to individual sports (not that some choices aren't great choices, because some are obviously still very awesome).

Now that you mention typical computer controls translated into gamepad controls, what about demanding PC games ported to next gen consoles? Can the PS4 run a challenging and exigent game like Planetside 2?

Read more in the original article:

They will probably need to design and code the control scheme for PS4 -- unless they also support keyboard and mouse. Heard the mouse emulation for DUST514 confused players during the beta tests. Not sure if they have updated the scheme since then.

I doubt EA Sports go exclusive.

We'll see how they transition. Back in 2006, EA Sports games were being developed for PC, so you'd think the transition would have been easier. But they released a concept render for Madden showing a much higher quality CGI than they ever achieved with their games on the current gen consoles.

And now, they haven't been developing for higher-power PC hardware for years, except for the PC version.

The advantage this time is that some of EAs internal developers have had some familiarity in dealing with modern high-end PC class hardware. Depending on how well connected each studio is with each other, it's possible that some of the sports studios talked to DICE about modern hardware. Certainly the non-sports teams have been in communication with each other if the plan is to switch all internal development over to Frostbite 3.

I'm not so sure EA Tiburon has been dealing with PC hardware.

The only EA Sports game on PC is FIFA, so maybe EA Vancouver is up on the stuff.

Looks like matte black with chrome and silver bits.

Circular speaker/vent thing is interesting

There seems to be quite a few vents, and a matte design.

Someone has grabbed every single photo from the teaser video... Most of the photos are close ups, it's not easy to discern in detail. But that's the point anyways. I see a lot of sharp lines and an angular design.

PlayStation 4 gets free to play MMO "War Thunder". Cross-platform online is a possibility.

What does the PlayStation 4’s hardware bring to the table compared to the PC and Mac versions of War Thunder?

A: PlayStation 4 has amazingly powerful architecture and it is fixed platform. When developing for PC, you always have to provide a lot of settings, some of which will help to increase performance but only on certain configurations. Or for the sake of maintainability PC engineers are sometimes forced to choose a more universal approach when working on the larger amount of configurations rather than the most optimal because most players don’t have top of the line rigs. PlayStation 4 is a fixed platform which allows us to optimize at the highest levels.
Of course, we will still work on PC and Mac versions of the game, as well as the recently announced mobile version.

Q: In adopting the x86 architecture, Sony has also promised that the PS4 will be much easier to develop for than its predecessor. Is that in line with the experience you’ve had working with their development kit?

A: It is not only x86 architecture (which is, technically not x86, since PS4 is 64 bit platform), it is the whole paradigm shift. Sony really made a huge step towards ease of development. PlayStation 3 was very powerful for that generation, but it was much harder to exploit– the power was mostly in SPU units. We had to spend a lot of time developing code for the PS3.
The PS4, I am happy to say, is much more accessible.

Q: You consider War Thunder an MMO – will there be cross-platform play or interaction between PS4, PC, and Mac users?

A: That’s exactly our goal! And we are very excited about that. War Thunder will not only likely to be the first online game on PS4, and more over free-to-play game, it is going to be cross-platform.

The circular vent is the speaker that goes "beep!" when you power it on
(and "beep beep beep" when your game crashes, the BBBOD)
