I can't really use the resume feature well, with three kids around it will just lead to chaos. I'll have to save the game like normal and go to the OS and hope later I'm the next one on and I can save the boot and game load time.

The convenience for me is not having to save - which in some games means having to find a location where you can save, or waiting for the game to progress where there is a save location.

A thousand times this.

- "ToTz, we need to leave to my parents' house!"
- "Okay, let me get to the next checkpoint, last checkpoint was 20min ago.."
(5min later)
- "C'mon ToTz, we need to go..."
- "Any time now for that checkpoint!"
(5min later)
- "TOTZ!!"
- "Baaaaah ok whatever" *turns off console, 30min gameplay trashed

Next day, I notice the save point was just around the corner in the place where I turned it off. FUUUUUUUUuuuu....

For some games, Suspend/Resume would lessen the impact of gameplay. In Alien Isolation a lot of the tension came from the fact that fixed save points are so precious. When I heard them beeping in the distance, that sound fired up so much joy in me [and then fear that I will fail to traverse to it]. :D

But surely the convenience factor trumps the atmosphere a hundred times. Sometimes we just HAVE TO switch off, and don't have time to get to that bloody save point. It's more a having a life versus atmosphere kind of thing.

Right. In a game like Alien Isolation it doesn't lessen the danger any. If you get ganked by the alien you go back to the last save point not when you resumed from suspend.

Most of the time I just pause the game and leave it running, but it will be nice to have the additional savings in power consumption and dust accumulation.

I did one of the GT5 24h races that way on PS3... I think it took me a week.

Yeah I do that too and it's a ridiculous and totally unnecessary waste of energy, which multiplied by millions of people is, in this day and age, completely immoral. So yay new rest mode!

http://www.vgleaks.com/rumor-big-ps2-ip-coming-back-exclusively-to-ps4

Does this have some credibility?

Everybody immediately turned this into a joke about The Last Guardian. It's both funny and sad.

Big (as in commercially) PS2 IP :

- Jak & Daxter
- The Getaway
- Socom was released on PS3, Ratchet and Clank also was released on PS3 but they could count as big PS2 IP.
What more is there?

If they started the production of The last guardian for PS4 only this month, I would seriously worry...

Also one could almost consider Ico 1 being an originally PS1 IP...:yep2:

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

so the "Suspend game" feature is basically just a simple "STANBY MODE" that has been available for years and (not always) working fine on PC? O_O
i though it was "hibernate mode" that works with game...

bah.. its useless for me then...
My hype for this feature was "i can hibernate the PS4 and dont need to worry about electricity blackout (that happened almost always at a minimum bi-weekly, and in-between weeks will have random blackouts".

It's impossible to have a true hibernation without writing and reading up to 8GB to the hard drive. That would take 80 seconds each way, plus establishing connectivity.

The only way this can work is by keeping the gddr5 powered so it doesn't lose it's content.

yeah, true hibernation need to cut off power to everything and dump the whole RAM to disk. just like windows, it can be annoyingly slow at times.

but... with the suspend... its still easier to just put the game on pause :/
its not like i want to keep it on "rest mode" for days. its safer to run looking for save points then turn off.

although i do miss the feature of wake on power. Its annoying when im out of town and cant remote my PS4 because electricity died sometime before. I need to call my home and ask help to "please press the small PS button on the game-thingy i usually play, thank you"

Yeah, definitely don't expect sixth-gen "you can resume Halo from cold boot in under 30s" stuff here. Modern memory is just way too big for these storage speeds

about that suspend resume video...

why Sony did not simply "take screenshot" to fake the suspend transition? Currently they use the stock "splash screen" and its jarring.

Meh. I don't care for resume mode.

But the HDD juggling is getting on my nerve.

Either let me backup individual game installs or better, use an external HDD for installs a la X1.

This is imo the most important feature!

Come on Soony, higher a MS software engineer! Do it!

i want to buy 2 TB HDD for my PS4 then put the current 500GB to my laptop (it have bad sector HDD). But... why the heck the HDD prices skyrocket like mad nowadays... The distributors needs to stop buying HDD stocks using US dollars...

Yeah, I was doing LoU Grounded and had been stuck on a bit for ages, I got halfway through (between the restart points) but had passed one of the hardest bits - I had to go pick up my son and the PS4 went into standby while I was out. Sure I could have switched that feature off (although TBH I dind't realise it was on) but I could have just put it in suspend.

I love suspend on Vita - it's a fantastic feature, but as pointed out here - with kids it means you can't really rely on the feature which is a shame.

It's a great update tho (overall some great features) - is the deleting zero trophies still in there? That'd be nice. Backs would be nice too but no plans to upgrade my 1TB hybrid at the mo.
