News & Rumours: Playstation 4/ Orbis *spin*

The EU PlayStation blog @PlayStationEU have tweeted 3D Blu-ray support in firmware 1.75. Wasn't expecting this before 1.8 buy I guess they want to beat Microsoft to the punch.
It's about time, they're both 9 months late.

There was a rumor that they wanted to come out with a big firmware update will all the media stuff. But it looks like they separated this one feature alone. I guess they're taking their time to do it right for the rest of media stuff (PS3 at launch was terrible, it was fixed much later). Still waiting for USB media playback, DLNA, and local MP3 in game music.

What's interesting is that they are using the team from Sony Vegas, it's a great software with a nice intuitive interface, and they obviously would have extensive experience with codecs on x86 and media playback interfaces. I'm optimistic they won't mess this up.

There was a rumor that they wanted to come out with a big firmware update will all the media stuff.

The alleged insider Tidux tweeted the same thing a few days back (https://mobile.twitter.com/Tidux/status/491259303647776769), later saying it was 1.8 and due out around the time of Gamescom, which begins 13th August.

I would be very impressed if the PS4 really accrues all of PS3's existing functionality. But I'm dubious.

Still waiting for, and really only wanting, sleep/resume.

I hope that rumour is true.

I'm waiting for PS4 to get PS3's (wonderful) media playback capabilities so I can trade it in and get a PS4.

I actually use my PS3 more for media than playing games.

Same here...
I have a pretty elaborate home theater, and PS3 has been almost the only device I used since 2006 for all my media needs. CD Ripping, MP3 Player syncing, Music Playback, Bluray/DVD, film rips, Netflix, and Gaming. That's pretty much everything outside of the occasional gaming on PC and Wii/GameCube. That 60GB launch model was really abused. I dismantled it every 2 years to remove the blobs of dust obstructing the heat sink.

The PS3 is still my most used device for everything except the occasional PS4 gaming. Even bluray, dvd and netflix, because there's no f&*king AV remote available for PS4. They better make one available, or at least make the PS3 AV remote compatible.

The PS3 and PS4 both obey HDMI-CEC, which is how I Control them and it works great Unfortunately for some reason on PS4 the Netflix app doesn't work with it yet.

So we just need Microsoft to add Media playback and Sony will get on the job :)

According to 'insider' Tidux who tweeted on this, Sony will release firmware 1.8 around the Gamescom (2 weeks from now) which will bring the PS4 into line with the PS3 feature wise.

Yeah, hard to believe but we'll see.

I can't believe the media centre stuff is hard for Sony given this functionality in plenty of their A/V controllers, TVs, DVD and Blu-ray players, as well as the PlayStation 3! I think it's always been around priorities in terms of what gets done first.

Now where's my sodding suspend/resume! :devilish:

Yeah, but we have to remember the Cell was an amazing real-time codec powerhouse, every cycle was predictable as long as the code and data were in the LS.

The Bluray players are using an integrated ASIC that does everything, they don't have that luxury on PS4 and have to reimplement everything from scratch in x86 and/or GPGPU.

User-supplied media is an attack vector to crack the console, so there must be a lot of code audit there. Nobody cares if someone rooted his TV, the PS4 is another matter

which will bring the PS4 into line with the PS3 feature wise.
If bluetooth remote support is in I'll be jawsocked with amazement. That's all I personally need/wish for, other than 3D-BR functionality.

I'll believe it when I see it, though.

I would imagine any major update would be 2.0 which I doubt would come out so close to this one. Maybe fall if we're lucky, personally I think if we go much more than a year or so out without MP3 and MP4 support it might not be coming...

I have no idea how reliable reddit is, but a verified Sony employee said that DLNA is coming in early 2015; MP3/video playback support in holiday 2014 (MP3 possibly sooner).

Shuhei Yoshida on Tomb Raider, Vita's no-show and the mystery of 10m PS4 sales

Euogamer have an interesting interview with Shuhei Yoshida which covers a bunch of items.

The thing that struck me most was how candid Sony are about PlayStation 4 sales, in that they have no idea why they are so high.

Shuhei Yoshida said:
"I'm asking marketing people to tell us why. They've been to people who already purchased, and some of the early data was amazing in terms of the number of people who didn't used to own PS3 have already purchased PS4. So we are getting lots of new customers coming into PlayStation. And some people never purchased any last-gen hardware: PS3, or Xbox 360 or Nintendo Wii. So where did they come from?"

So Sony's big problem is they don't know why sales are so high. What a terrible problem to have! :yep2:

Not terrible but it is important :)

I suspect there are many people who werent originally gamers during the PS2+PS1 era but converted from Wii+360 to the PS platform. The market has grown last gen especially if you account the fact that it has lasted for so long. Obviously they squeezed sales potential as much as they could. Now we are talking about 160 million 360+PS4 (edit: I ment PS3) users plus another 100 million Wii users. Thats 260 million consoles sold last gen of which 180 million were not Playstation platforms.

The XB1 PR communication disappointed and probably pissed off too many people. The PS4 got everything right. Whatever the 360 was famous for, the PS4 provided it, plus it had the right price and the right communication. At the same time the WiiU disappointed and failed to absorb the Wii audience. The PS3 audience didnt have many reasons to be disappointed about. They had a ton to be happy about.
You immediately have many old consumers who saw the next gen versions of their favorite consoles doing things wrong and probably pissing them at the same time. Its easy for a large number of those to convert to the company that communicated things perfectly giving a sense of respect to the consumer and by providing a good product.

At the same time there are probably many who skipped last gen's consoles because of Sony's screw ups and came back since the PS4 brought memories of the PS2 and PS1 days.

Good communication, a fast selling product, good price, a product that was hard to get for quite some time due to great demand probably strengthen the word of mouth which made more people to want to take part

The good thing about the PS4 is that it also provides free games and many indie games which are friendlier to the less core people. The type of games that are probably becoming famous due to the Tablet games

Not terrible but it is important :)
It was said in jest! :) Obviously it's a serious problem because if you can't bottom out the appeal of your product, how on earth can you capitalise on it.
