I don't see Sony putting a jack there, headsets should be universal bluetooth like the PS3.
Wired connections are so 2005

EDIT: I stand corrected, definitely looks like a 1/8 jack.
From that angle it looks so much more comfortable than the DS3.

An idea popped into my mind: could the DS 4 feature both a speaker and mic in the central part?
I mean, if that's a jack of a headphone then the DS 4 would work as mic.

I like the new shape and handles.

Not sure about the speaker and jack. I guess a lot of people use wired headset. I think a mic would help voice recognition. 8^(

I doubt that's a huge issue - the PS3 controller apparently comes with a 570mAh battery, an 1800mAh replacement battery costs under $5 for a consumer.

The cost wasn't only with consideration for the battery. :) The touchpad is going to add some cost. That speaker/microphone is going to add some cost. The LED illuminated panel will add some cost. The unannounced features would add cost. The extensive wishlist of features someone was hoping the controller would contain would add some cost. Etc.

Early rumors suggested that Sony was (is ?) considering Move controller bundle at launch. If they focus on "core" gamers, then they only need to bundle the DS4, which assimilates some Move (and Vita) features.

Perhaps the controller price will go up by a couple of dollars but I'm ok with it. ^_^

The existing Move controllers we have can still be used.

Yes, I like Sony's one size fits all approach. No attachments or other accessories to buy, lose and store. Just one controller.

And if we're talking about bundles, I think they should do a bundle where they include the vita at cost along with a PS+ year sub.

Well, the _other_ important aspect is software and OS integration. Sony usually fall down here. Hardware (and hardware integration) is not the issue for them.

Undoubtedly but if Sony decided to make the DS 4 this way then it is reasonable to imagine that it didn't cost them a fortune, or that will cost us a fortune.

Apparently, the face buttons will be digital instead of analog (pressure sensitive).

That would bring us back to PS One.
Frankly I doubt that.
Why change something that doesn't need to be changed, something that worked well for 13 years?

Because Microsoft's lack of support for it has made it almost completely superfluous this gen, could be one reason. But to be honest, I would still be surprised if they went that route, for pure backward compatibility reasons alone.

Probably less expensive, money would be better spent elsewhere.
I'm curious how much it would impact BC, I don't remember a single PS3 game that required the analog buttons.
