News & Rumours: Playstation 4/ Orbis *spin*

It's the normal approach. You sell a product, a small percentage of which are broken. You replace or refund. There's no other way to do it as that's the law. I presume some stock is reserved for this purpose.

This is not like the failures of last gen that were unexpected and well above the normal rate of failure, where there was a requirement to repair and refurbish to accommodate the large number of dead consoles, leading to frustrating delays.

Does anyone know how DF measured the noise levels on PS4?
They state that the 'direct' measurement is next to the exhaust fan, does this mean they had the PS4 facing backwards into the living room?
My guess is that the PS4 is designed to direct all the sound to the back.

So, any way to get in contact with the DF -gentleman? (I once read he is a mod on this forum or something)

Place a sound level meter next to the console and measure. Then place it at the different distances (1m and 3m wasn't it) and read the sound pressure.

The close mic measurement serves no purpose, 1m it's the most important reading, 3m tends to be polluted by the room interaction, the silent reading shows the noise floor to be subtracted.

Sadly, to be blunt, I think DF sound measurements are useless to draw any conclusion and should be ignored. It looks like anything from complete silence to loudest noise is either 40, 41 or 42db with no decimal point. There's not enough precision to extrapolate anything. The fact that he get almost the same measurements at 1m and 3m is an indication that something's wrong with the setup, or that he gets a good amount of room gain. Nothing adds up. With decimals and the equipment precision stated, there would be something to figure out though...

I know people would like to have numbers for comparison purposes, but it's VERY difficult to measure SPL at these low levels (20db to 30db).

Part of one of the rooms at work is 120 dB. Pretty easy to measure ;) You guys wanna see loud fans? I'll show you loud fans! Actually, I can't, because I'm not allowed to take pictures.

Loudest fans I personally witnessed was either the ventilation setup for a duo of rather really friggin large Mercedes-Benz auxiliary diesel power generators that were the height of a man roughly with basically a wall of fans set into concrete (they didn't cool the engines, they just wafted air around for some unknown reason, maybe if there was exhaust leaking into the room I dunno...), or it was a gas turbine power generator which was really really loud even if you jammed your fingers in your ears... Not sure that really counts as a fan per se though even though it had one integrated as part of its core function...

Incidentally, those generators powered two giant telecom satellite uplink dishes in case of mains power failure. The radio equipment room where the waveguide conduits ended up had ionizing radiation warning signs all over. You felt kinda creeped out moving through the space while all the stuff was running - quickly, because it wasn't entirely safe to linger. ;)

This was back in the 80s and I haven't died of radiation poisoning, cancer or turned into a zombie - yet. Those dishes were both mothbagged like 15 years ago though, I guess they couldn't compete with fiberoptic links anymore or something. They were hella cool though back in the day.

I think the loudest place I ever had access to was an underground server farm with a, if I remember correctly, a Cray 2 at one end. There were about 1,000 servers and a central section with green screen terminals and keyboards. The temperature down there was kept at an even 10C. I remember you had to wear ear protectors, a coat, and fingerless mits if you wanted to do any work. The only reason I ever got access is that I was managing a server that was racked down there. But that was one loud place!

That just worked right out of the box for me when I got my new TV last Friday and hooked it up to the PS3, was quite surprised actually, but shouldn't really have been as that's what HDMI-CEC is all about, and it's been around for a few years now. Netflix, Bluray playback, starting games, controlling the webbrowser, basically anything just worked.

I think you do need a Slim or newer though, because the old phat I think didn't support the HDMI-CEC commands yet.

AFAIK, PS3 in all its incarnations didn't do HDMI-CEC (= transferring IR commands through HDMI's I2C line). BT remote worked though. That's also how Logitech's Harmony works, via a hub).

IIRC, the PS3 supported HDMI CEC. I faintly remember playing with it on the TV I had at the time (Samsung 46" LCD) and it had very limited functionality. This was years ago, however.

I can't say for sure how PS3 phat handles it, as I didn't have a CEC-compatible TV while my phat still lived, but the slim fully supports it from what I can tell. I turn my PS3 on; TV turns on also and switches to the correct HDMI input. Turn TV off; PS3 turns off (you have to be a bit careful with that one though, in case you paused a game and switched away from HDMI to a TV channel, or you'll lose your progress...) Movie playback controls also work via TV remote, and so on. That surprised the hell out of me actually, I didn't know it would work, I just discovered it by mistake when I picked up the wrong remote one day. :)

Oh that, yes, my ps3 can turn on the tv and switch to HDMI. I just never knew about the TV remote thing. Will try it tonite :D
