News & Rumours: Playstation 4/ Orbis *spin*

Well at least one of the rumours suggested that they have fixed the R2/L2 buttons from the idiotic PS3 design, however my wish to have the left thumbstick where the D-pad now is, will probably never materialize

that looks a bit like a virtual thumbstick though - I was more thinking in the sense of a pad where you could move your aim like you would on any laptop where you control your mouse pointer with a mousepad. Now that I think about it though, I'm not sure playing a shooter would actually be better like this, as you would have to use multiple "swipes" to move around in first-person mode. Not sure if this would be a good thing afterall...

Trackpads are generally unusable for gaming on laptops. Even something like Torchlight is basically untenable without a mouse plugged in.

I'd much prefer the Playstation Move for something like Torchlight anyway.

Wouldn't it be too expensive (2 stereoscopic cameras) ?

I remember Sony has another patent on embedded touchpad in a "transformer" controller.

The Xperia Play already had that feature.

I remember reading reviews where the biggest complaint was the lack of physical feedback.

That's why it's not a good analog stick. Having good physical feedback helps you adjust your movements. It's better than pasting your hand covering the entire screen (so better than every other phone basically) and it has real buttons, but it's not as good as a real analog stick still. The only reason it's in the Play is because of the sliding design.

On Vita they opted for real dual analog sticks and that was a relief for most people I think.

If anyone has tried to play PlayStation games on their Android Phone (which is not play), it is terrible to control. It's almost an exercise in frustration for games which need rapid input. I can play Mario Bros 3 on it, but it's not as fun as with a real D-pad and A and B buttons. I can play Megaman Legends or Resident Evil 2, and it's still not as fun. Even though interfacing with Final Fantasy VII is a bit easier because you're interacting with menus most of the time, it's still not as fun because it's still unweildy compare to what is already available (maybe if the game was recoded for touch controls that would be different, but only for a game with input like FF7).

Also I don't see how a touch analog stick makes aiming better in FPS games? Touch controls are not great for FPS (try Minecraft on your phone versus say the Xbox 360 version). The responsive tilt controls on Vita are a better solution and supplement to analog sticks (and work practically in Uncharted GA). Replacing the analog sticks in the DualShock would be neutering it. It wouldn't be a good controller anymore.

If they put an almost 4-inch screen with capacitive multitouch, that's a big cost. That could make the price almost 50% higher than now.

Vita games make much use of the touchscreen? I recall playing around with FIFA and you could do swipes to pass the ball into space but having it on the back make it awkward, almost pointless.

As usual, depends on the game.

Direct manipulation titles like tower defense, RTS, puzzle, expression, construction games will benefit from the touch screen. e.g., Plants vs Zombies, LittleBigPlanet.

A touchscreen or touchpad is useful these days because games are more "sophisticated" now. e.g., in-game XMB or web browsing, working through a clan UI, configuring gears in RPG, capturing screen, sharing user generated contents, or even customizing weapons and building up levels.

*If* Sony introduces a visor, a touchpad is essentially the same as a touchscreen.

Arwin may prefer a Move controller for Torchlight but most games are still Dualshock based. They may need a better input mechanism for these extended tasks, instead of switching between Move and Dualshock constantly.

By visor do you mean 3D glasses that combine augmented-reality function? That would be really neat, but honestly, if it isn't shipped with the console, it's not likely anyone would go out of their way to design their games control scheme around it. I'm sure some games would, the same way there are games for Kinect and Move, but it's unlikely a game like Killzone 4 would. You'd have to have to be able to provide the same functionality without the glasses. The likelihood of pack-in visor is low if they're packing in PS Eye.

This is Sony. ^_^

KZ3 and key titles patched in 3D and Move integration to move h/w units for additional profit. Orbis rumors say Playstation will have an AR visor called OmniViewer. If successful, they can bundle it later, like Move.

3D doesn't change functionality. For the most part games that supported Move just used it as a pointer (which is great for shooters), but you have all of the same buttons and controls. The wand just replaces the right thumbstick. In the case of a touchpad with a button mapping you can only see with augmented-reality glasses, you'd have to provide all of the same functionality to the user if they're not using the glasses. How would you do that? It's not impossible, but if you can come up with a good way to do it all without the glasses, then why wear the glasses?

If the rumor is true, the touchpad will be standard.

It's only the AR visor that needs software change, like 3D. If Sony want to, they will add a DLC or a game patch to throw in visor features. The visor is said to overlay 3D visuals on regular TV also. I don't know how it works.

Kojima also added VR-like missions for its Metal Gears series. If it's something interesting, he may be up for more VR/AR experiments. These are just some early visor rumors.

Recent rumors and patent filing indicates that they will add HDMI out to Vita too. Should Sony proceed, it will be cool to see a gaming oriented HMZ-T series.

I agree with you, but if there's anything phones and this generation with Move and Wiimote and Kinect have shown, it is that even with a touchscreen, it's also really nice to have physical buttons. Ideally both are available and even have overlapping functions. DS, 3DS and Vita games are a great example of this.

Sounds like something akin to Leap Motion:

Maybe I was on to something when I was messing around with the PlayStationEye hand tracking with my laptop in the floor below me.

I don't think it will be too expensive because chances are it will be using small cameras like the one's in smartphones & tablets & might also be using Sony's Single Lens 3D Camera Technology.

Looks like an early version of the controller. The blue light in the back ¿Bye bye Move?

I don't think that means bye bye Move, but that the controller can be identified by color instead of the leds, and can be seen by the camera more easily. At this point a color shifting led is probably cheaper than those original four leds, and way more user friendly. Mind you, it will still mean that the PS Eye can very likely find it and track it. But I don't see that as being as useful as a Move controller, simply because for free movement that dualshock would just not be comfortable. Could be really good for some uses though.

Can't really tell from this if that touch area is also a display, but it's definitely quite small currently. I do really hope it's a display though, I would hate it otherwise.
