New PS4 Smell

I watch a lot of movies and TV shows. Plastic wears, rubber buttons wear, and human gunk accumulates. :p

I'm not. I think Sony are banking on a lot of people using their TV/STB's remote which will control the PS4 (via HDMI-CEC). Now it's a long way from perfect but with an update, I'll be able to use my fully-featured TV-remote to control the PS4's Blu-ray and DVD playback functions. And there's no reason media apps like Netflix, IGN etc, can not be updated to accept this input as well.

I think a PS4-specific remote is probably a long way down Sony's list of hardware to make, especially as Sony have been making an effect to stop making low-margin, low-selling hardware.

I'm not opposed to one myself, I owned by the PS2 remote (which came with an IR received) and the PS3 Bluetooth remote and it's rather annoying the latter doesn't work with PS4.

The margin on a 20.00 remote is probably better than the console itself, IMO the time to do a remote is at or near launch to try and recover whatever loss they are taking on hardware sales.

Well that entirely depends on volume. How many if these do you see Sony selling? 25,000? 100,000? 1,000,000? If CEC is working for lots of people, how many will spring for a dedicated remote? Personally I'd rather spend 20 on a game.

Incidentally what is the margin? Remember there is design, testing, certification (EC, FCC etc), manufacture, packaging, shipping, inventory.

Well CEC isn't even working properly on Bravia TVs, so we can hardly account for that.

Well I never had to do this on my PS3.......

The PS3, by default, allowed audio out of 1 output only. Multi audio output was added in a later firmware update as a user requested feature.

The PS4, however, by default, outputs audio to both optical and HDMI. There is also currently no way to disable multi audio out. This is why you did not have to disable/mute your TV's speakers with the PS3 but do with the PS4.

I agree, by the way. It's quite annoying.

The only issue I have with CEC is when apps require the PS button which doesn't exist on a regular remote. It would be handy if they could allow you to assign that to some other button.

CEC doesn't work at all with my TV set (upper mid-range samsung, appx 1.5 years old.) It DID work somewhat with PS3 for a while, enough that I could navigate the XMB and play back movies with the direction pad and enter button (but strangely NOT with the actual media playback buttons on the remote!), however some firmware update some time ago either for PS3 or the TV broke it and now I get no reaction at all.

Most TV remotes won't allow you to fast forward/rewind or anything, while playing Bluray movies or Amazon instant videos. Which really is the main reason one would use the remote, I'd say.

WRT margin, its not like they have to go to draw board and start from scratch. They have the PS3 remote and all their universal remotes for reference. and regarding inventory it actually could be helpful to have additional items next to the PS4 for purchase.

I have no idea what the margin is but I would imagine its decent if not arguably better than the actual console.

edit:

My guess (not worth much) is that these remotes have a decent attach rate. Even third party manufacturers release them which suggest the number of potential sales as well as margin are decent.

What STB supports HDMI CEC?
Dish's Hopper, some Panasonic, Huawei and Philips models. I don't have a list, I found those by googling.

Unfortunately what googling also shows is that Samsung TVs have all sorts of compatibility issues supporting CEC. Just typing "HDMI-CEC" into google for me has google show lots of links to Samsung TV related issues.

Excellent, Amazon have finally dispatched my official Sony DualShock 4 charging station! It's been out of stock since the PS4 launch.

Curiosity - how does that charge the controllers? The USB plus is on the other side...

Sony said before launch the DualShock 4 could be charged using the USB cable or via the extension port (next to the 3.5mm TRRS jack) which is what the charging station uses.

The top connector is better placed for wired play and the bottom connector is probably better for moulding a cradle for a charging dock. Sony haven't commented on what else the extension port supports. Google 'Dualshock 4 extension port secret'.

I got one of those in my pack. It's pretty handy and with both controllers plugged in it looks smart next to the PS4 as well.

Ya, you don't notice the strange port on the bottom until you look for it :)

I think everyone should have a charging station for every console, so little hassle and controllers are fully charged each time you sit down.

Amazon UK is out of stock and the only other seller is charging double, it's not even available on US Amazon.

Sony really need to pick their game up as they are not meeting demand on most accessories, an official blu-ray remote is not even available several months after launch.

Mine was ordered about two weeks prior to the UK launch.
