New PS4 Smell

You are not forced to share your real name. There is a separate name request feature.

You can create a new user at login screen iirc.

Yeah, I know. I just think the whole implementation is a bit clumsy. Especially because you are forced to enter your full name (or something that meets the first and last name criteria because both fields are required) when you finalize your PSN account on the new console. Annoyingly, this information is then also shown throughout the console, regardless if you have granted any "name requests" or not.

I would have prefered a more optional setting, e.g.; You can supply your name and surname if you wish, but it's optional. Then, a simple feature if you want to have it public, friends, friends of friend or on a per request basis.

It just seems to me that they must have realized that facebook is so popular and figured, "hey, lets make it similar and add a name feature". Not everyone uses facebook and not everyone wants to socialize - and some that do want to socialize, might prefer to do it without using their realname. Sure, no one is forcing you, but I don't see much benefit in if someone sees 'the real name' or not, and in the context of this being a console to play games, I'm not sure if that's really necessary. There a lot of people who play games online, socialize, but do it using an alias that they have built up and made a name for themselves. When I think about all those people who have invested hundreds of hours into online shooters and role playing games on the web, I don't think any of them have a real interest to share their real name but live under the premise of the alias that they've built up.

Real names work under facebook because the whole point is to connect people. If you're not known under your realname, the people you meet in real life won't find you.

This is a console though to play games. If you really want to integrate with facebook on your console, you can simply have the option you already have and voila, you already have the connection to your "real-name" if that's what you wish.

I agree that showing full name on the console (when logged in, or connect with vita/mobile) is too much. Just nick or at most first name would be fine there.

I look forward to the activity sharing coming online. The 'live areas' came up yesterday for some games, and already make the UI more interesting. Should be today, I think, for the activity sharing?

Personally I think the real name thing is perfect right now. Much better, but still completely optional and separate request. I also think it prioritises people who you are on a 'real name basis' with throughout the UI (e.g. on top of online friends etc.) but not entirely sure.

Has ANYONE ever seen anything come up under the "what's new" heading (far left on the "XMB")? I've never ever seen a single thing appearing there. I feel like I'm sitting in front of a wiiu console! *badum pssht!*

Also, I wonder why the console brings up the god-fucking-damned login screen every bloody time I press the PS button on my sleeping controller to wake it up. Even when I'm watching movies it does this shit, with the movie still playing in the background. The toast notifications that appear when the controller powers off are also extremely distracting while watching movies, and since I'm "forced" to use the controller as a remote (no menu button or next/prev chapter on my TV remote at all - not that the DDC link seems to forward any of the actual playback buttons on my remote anyway, I have to use the directional and enter buttons.) Or maybe it's the PS4 that doesn't listen to these messages properly, I dunno.

You can control the notification settings in quite a bit of detail.

The HDMI-CEC for me (modern TV) afaik works with everything except Netflix (and Amazon Prime or something like that if you're in the US).

The what's new section was purposefully left off-line for the opening weekend, as this caused some trouble when it was overloaded in the U.S. It should be switched on today, I expect.

Seriously? It's not higher or lower than with anything else. I've had no issues, ever, with anything in the six+ years I've been using CC's online for anything.

After the PSN hack, what is your motivation for storing your real info, esp. credit cards?

Because they might have learned something? Like every freaking giant company should have done after the hack.. BUT here we are with Adobe screwing up, like countless other companies have done since..

If anything Sony's PSN would be one of the companies working the hardest to provide the best security out there.

With things like Amazon, you have no choice because of the convenience.

But for video games, I see no advantage in giving them your real info. Especially since you can work around credit cards with the prepaid cards.

Observation, I plugged in Killzone, it installed just as fast as the others, but then the drive kept spinning, and as I was playing contrast I didn't notice anything besides the drive still spinning, I pressed the share button and the share function was very slow reacting, like crawling instead os fast and smooth like it usually is.

Clearly the system was busy doing something else, i would guess installing more Killzone content I ejected the bluray and everything was snappy again..

Sony had that feature disabled because their online infrastructure can't handle the demand. If only there was a way for Sony to have known how many consoles would have been out there. Then they could have made certain they had their online infrastructure scaled accordingly. It got to a point where Sony even had to disable additional services such as code and voucher redemption just so people would be able to login.

My daughter really likes Just Dance alot so today for the first time I turned on the Playroom demo for her. She was really amazed by the robots, she's little so she thought they were real so when I 'kicked' the bigger one and he shot me and my head lit up with fire she freaked out. She thought the robot had hurt me and was also upset that I was being mean to the robot.

The Playroom is a decent demo for what is, I'm looking forward to a new version of Eye Pet, my kid will love it.

They took the cautious approach since they knew that there never had been so many ps4 consoles online, which comes as no surprise. Personally I think it's refreshing that so shortly after a launch and with literally millions online everything is running smoothly. I have shared like a mad man, downloaded from psn and so far not encountered anything.

Mind you, Friday night I was at a depeche mode concert and I would guess that was where the real problems arouse.

Tldr, they did a good job compared to other recent examples and they didn't disable some of the most fun things like sharing.

The initial spike was due to new players coming in and downloading all sorts of stuff. Even if Sony knew how many are coming, they may not want to build/buy the extra capacity for this tidal wave of "new" users.

Ohh and the first update to PSN must be that it downloads updates to games the moment that the disc is inserted,

It was a poor launch, service-wise. Admittedly I didn't setup my PS4 until 17.30 on EU launch day but I couldn't sign in to PSN until around 21.00 that night. Fortunately I had games to play and trophies earned just attributed to my PSN ID once the PS4 know who I was.

I'd be interested in know how Sony have setup PSN, because I could login into PSN from both the web site end and my Vita. There must be dedicated servers for certain platforms.

Interesting. I can't say I've had any trouble at all. I got my PS4 on Thursday evening and pretty much played every evening online since, including the friday evening on which the PS4 officially launched throughout Europe and I *never* encountered problem, a lost connection, anything. It's actually quite weird, because I have no idea how it actually looks like when my PS4 loses its connection to PSN - the thing just seems always connected and the PSN login stuff is neatly hidden away in the settings menu anyway.

Sony's messaging was consistently "some users are encountering problems". I wonder to what extent Sony's servers are regionalised in Europe and if so, did the larger allocation of pre-order consoles the UK supposedly received, result in a lower server/console ratio than is optimum. Not that I read any reports that indicate servers issues were locale to the UK or a particular area of Europe.

And to be fair, I wasn't very persistent in trying to login. I trying maybe once an hour, perhaps three attempts each time, while playing Killzone. Had the issue persisted over the weekend it would have been quite annoying, as it was (for me) a few hours it was merely irritating. I was able to play Killzone and marvel (and kill) lots of nextgen shiny Helghast, all of whom in my mind worked in Sony's networking department ;)

Actually this is something I hadn't noticed until you mentioned it. My PS3 was constantly losing and re-gaining connection to PSN but the PS4 is either more robust or just less vocal about notifying the user when this happens.
