No one's saying it looks BAD.

We're just saying it doesn't deserve the WOW some people attributed to it, considering what it is.

Because it's not on PS3. LOL. :)

Seriously, I don't actually believe that people aren't impressed by this shot.

Btw, didn't someone actually say that the PS1 had graphics like this? Hilarious.

Acert, one picture with as many polygons i can count in 20 seconds and textures which are just digital pictures can look as photorealistic as you want, it still doesn't WOW me. Not because i'm a Sony fanboi or some of the stupidity some people utter on here, it's because anything released in the last few years could do that image.
From the image, no one can know if the lighting is dynamic, therefore scepticism is only to be expected, cause for all we know those are just plain digital pictures slapped on max 50 polygons, if even that.
Even if there's some kind of prebaked lighting that wasn't there in the digital pictures, it's still old news.

In the end, one single picture of a part of a building, as photorealistic as it looks, is not impressive in my eyes, whether it's on Dreamcast, on X360, on PS4. End of story.

I don't know who said it looks plain BAD, i don't have time to read every post in threads like this, where the best defence to people raising very valid technical points is "you only say that cause it's a MS game!11"

Maybe it's just telling something about your own limitation.
To me ,that screen is just 8-10MB photodata +vertexbaked ambient occlusion +AA.

Here are some GT4 pictures.....there not as good (most definatley) but just being used to draw a comparasin...

I personally want to see some nights shots of PGR3....day shots are way to fricken dull and bland....that same shot of that wall at NIGHT must look really nice....are there night courses on PGR?

GT4's day shots suffer from lack of space for GI textures. Night shots don't need the same GI due to contrast so look a lot more realistic.

I want next-gen racers to have true headlights. That's been severly lacking this gen.

I think it was something along the lines it could render polygons and pre-rendered shadow maps. :?

It does look like pre-rendered shadow maps (or something different, but still pre-computed), with highres textures and cubmaps for the window reflections. Looks very nice.

Bohdy,

Qroach: Mr. Floopy seems to agree with me and others that it *is* as simple (technically) as applying photos to textures, but his point is that if it looks so good then the complexity of the technique shouldn't matter.

Actually I think Mr floopy (giggle! I love that name) was making a point that you;'d be suprised how simple some of teh techniques are in today's games, but not that the technique used in this screen was simple.

There's obviously more to that picture then just applying low or high res textures to gemoetry and using vertex lighting. If that was the case ALL of today's games would look better.

He specifically made a point that who cares what technique they used, if it still looks better then what we currently have (mr floopy, please correct me if i'm wrong).

There's nothign wrong with saying you don't like it or you don't think it's good, just don't try and justify that with BS like, i've seen better on PS1, or there's nothing special about the screen shot. Obviously there is somehting special about the screen shot since there's no games out that looks like this.

I think Qroach said it best.

Obviously there is somehting special about the screen shot since there's no games out that looks like this.

This one sentence alone should be repeated 1000 times. I think we should get used to certain games looking like this next-gen. We have had other devs show games that look somewhat representative to what the devs have shown with this PGR3 shot. So yes this shouldn't really be a HUGE surprise.

I get sick and tired hearing all these naysayers (not many here but more at other forums) stating that the jump between the PSone generation vs. the PS2 generation is not going to happen next time around. Well from this pic and other pics have shown that the jump will be just as big if not bigger.

I agree.

we are so early in the life cycle... "we ain't seen nothing yet". ;)

and I'm not building myself up for a letdown, I know I'll be impressed (I"m just a gamer) with 1st party titles especially and with 2nd generation even more.

From MSR to PGR to PGR2 to PGR3, it looks like straight linear improvements. Except for the increased resolution in PGR3, there's no real indication of a generational leap in any of the pics. IMO.

If you can't see the difference between those pics, then there's not much point in arguing. There's clearly a difference. aside from resoloution. The onyl picture out of those that has realistic lighting and textures that aren't completly low res is the last pic. It's also the only one that could fool people into thinking it was a photo.

Sad how discussions boil down to "fanboys can't accept this cause they're blinded" when very valid technical points have been raised.

Heh, Haven't seen a real technical point on this forum for quite some time.
There is no doubt that taken as is (which is all we have) that this is simply the most impressive shot I have seen in realtime cgi. Remember that this is a racing sim game whose purpose it is, is to present a realistic driving experience. My last 4 years have been spent developing driving simulators for training and safety, and have always been a fan graphically of the GT series. This is a generational sized gap from what has been seen before, even from recent PC hardware, which our simulators were. (Wavey knows what hardware etc).

(mr floopy, please correct me if i'm wrong).

No you are correct.

2nd to last pic above from Iron Tiger - Shows detailed local scenery, flat-textured distant scenery.

Wonder if this 'china-town' shot represents an area of high detail that you'll pass close to so it's detailed, whereas other scenery viewed from afar is more of the flat texture style? Maybe that accounts for differences between screenshots? Also once they get DOF working a 2D texture will be fine.

This shot is a screenshot of the in-game graphics.

The Dev's at blizzard are extremely busy, their web guys mentions them sleeping at work, and eveyone with circles under their eyes as the deadlines loom. So do you really think they are going to spend time making a fake screenshot to release??

What's the point in that? Especially when they haven't shown any interest in trying to Hype up the game with fancy images.

It makes much more sense this is an in-game shot, being worked on right now, and they grabbed a screenshot and gave it to the Web guy to be posted.

What people dont get is that PSx and N64 didnt have fingers, so the Ps2 and xbox and Gamecube brought along fingers and high rez textures.

Xbox 360 and PS3 cant reinvent Fingers, what they can is Give you more of everything you saw last gen, better textures, physics and whatever.

I dont know what people are expecting? Did you guys wanted them to model every freakin building with every freakin detail?

What that images shows is how next gen will improve on current gen, they cant reinvent reflections, but they can make them better, next gen is all about making things better, because current Gen already gives us alot.

So, people stop playing dumb, you arent going to be playing with Real Life looking graphics next Gen.

And that is Photo mode, wich looks twice the game that Gt4 does in game.
