Very nice. Seems like a lot of attention has been paid to the textures (relatively speaking of course).

It just seems like your bog standard shooter, but on a bigger scale, which sounds good in theory, but gets boring quickly in practice. I found planetside fun for the first 3 days, but havn't touched it since.

The best mmofps IMO is Face of Mankind and thats purely because it's hilarity factor is through the roof. In FOM everything is player controlled, including all the major factions... it's much more satisfying to shoot someone because of an actual dispute, rather than to shoot them because the game tells you to.

Good graphics, but I don't hold much hope for the actual game.

It's coming to PC also. In terms of consoles, I don't know if it's explicitly planned to be an exclusive more than that's just how it is turning out for now. Might always change, of course (unless there was an announcement i missed?).

One question I have - why do people sometimes say "this looks good for a MMO"? I guess standards for content generation might slip when applied across a massive world, but in terms of actual rendering quality, all rendering is done locally, and I wouldn't expect that to be a function of whether it's a MMO or not..?

I think it's because we're used to seeing games take a quality drop when playing online.

Microsoft has mentioned many times that an XNA-compatible next generation game could allow PC and Xbox gamers to play each other without the risk of cheating thanks to the use of a common online service: Xbox Live.
Do you plan to release Huxley on PC too (UE3 is XNA compatible)? If so, would you allow Xbox 2 and PC gamers to play in a common environment?

Kijong Kang: We are developing a PC version of Huxley. We are also considering the possibility of allowing Xbox 2 and PC gamers to play together. We’re not sure if cross-platform play will work without any problem yet. Nevertheless, we trust Microsoft’s XNA.

Based on the interview theyre using XNA studio to develop this titles and theyre considering 360/PC player interaction. That, and the entire interview, doesnt make it seem like theyre planning any other platforms. I dont know if there was any 'announcement' per se but the full on support of XNA, imo, does everything short of announcing it exclusive.

I think one of the allures of MMOs is the ability to cusotmize your in-world avatar. I think this diversity probably requires a lot more texture memory than your standard SP or BF2 - style game and tends to bring down the texture quality overall of everything else.

Becuase in a MMO game you can wind up with 100s of players in your view at the same time.

True enough. Although we're seeing that in offline games, with hundreds/thousands of characters, albeit with much heavier instancing obviously.

I don't think using XNA precludes support for another platform at all. I know it's not been announced for another console platform, for sure, but I just didn't want to close the door on that entirely in my response.

Wholly custom avatars would, but if your customisation is based on shared assets, it might help here. Although in the PC space I guess people can create their own totally new assets to use in games, in some cases.

I'm not really sure why Titanio, a combination of factors I guess, but MMO's generally do not push the graphical limits like single player games.

Imagine if you set out to make one graphics-redefining game..it will be single player so you can tightly control every single thing that happens and uber focus on the graphics. MMO's are just too open ended and unpredictable, I suppose. Like you could set up an canyon for the player to enter with a graphically impressive rockslide..in a single player game you can control everything about this situation..in a MMO how do you do that?

It's interesting, some of the most impressive FPS in my opinion have even foregone multiplayer. Multiplayer is easier to tack on, and you can still do great graphics, moreso than an MMO, but still if you wanted to do the abslute best graphics you could you would do a single player game only.

Hell I suppose GRAW is a bit of an example of this, using a seperate, somewhat worse looking engine for the multi-player.

Also in practice MMO's dont really recieve much in the way of graphics upgrades, so after a year or two they look stale (like a single player game, but a single player game doesn't remain fully viable after 2-3 years and more). Although this does not relate your original question.

Right, but with ofline games the developers have more control over whether that happens or not, with a MMO the players can make it happen basicly wherever they please.

I didn't mean the game as a whole. I was referring to this:

The single-player campaign -- exclusive to the 360

:)

Unless that's what you meant... I'm having a bit of trouble understanding your second sentence

Graphically, given the current early nature of the 360 game, the PC version clearly looks nicer in a side-by-side comparison, but the developers claim that by the 360 version's release they expect the two to look roughly equivalent. Running on Unreal Engine 3, the PC version right now looks as good as if not better than any other game on the market, so a very high standard has been set for the developers to match on 360. When asked if he foresees any problems making the 360 version up to the PC standard, producer Kijong Kang says, "Not really. Epic has already shown that it can be done with Gears of War. We also have the technology to make the transition from PC to Xbox 360 a smooth one."
