he joined just to say that! lol. Anyway they gave GOW2 a 7....they gave Bioshock an 8...so I'll add a couple of points thank you very much.

IGN gave it 7/10 points. Seems the gameplay is what takes the score down in this and other reviews

As solid as its component parts are, poor design decisions and awful structure mean they never make for a cohesive, satisfying whole.

Despite the wealth of combos and extras to unlock, you'll be constnatly battling with tedium on subsequent play-throughs.

Edge has a simple method. If you have a game with zero innovation, but it is otherwise pretty much perfect, you can score an 8. Depending on whether or not you have some successful innovative bits you can score higher, or compensate for imperfections in the non-original section.

UK.IGN is typically a little stricter ... compare Eurogamer's review of Gears of War, for instance. ;) Or Halo. They're all pretentious bastards who think they know games. ;) And of course they do. But I suspect that won't stop a lot of people enjoying Heavenly Sword immensely.

One n00bish flaw, though, is that when reviewers mention a game's length, they should be forced by law also to mention which difficulty setting they were playing at.

Oh well. This will very likely be one game that I will make up my own mind about come release. ;)

6 or 7 hours is good for me.

I have never completed a hack and slash game (despite liking them) because I get bored of them fairly quickly.

I really like all Onimusha games, but I haven't finished one of them yet

Sigh, this review echos my biggest fears. After playing the demo many many times, I felt that after awhile, combat might get repetitive, and HS seemed to be a very combat heavy game. The videos seemed to show more mini-games, especially the escort mission/rescue sequence with the bow/arrow (reminds me of a great sequence in COD1 where you are trying to stop germans from crossing a bridge and pressing a plunger on dynamite, and you are in a bell tower with a sniper rifle)

One of the hallmarks of GOW/GOW2 was not only the amazingly good "flow" of the story line, in and out of action, with almost no loading, was the fact that every few minutes, the game switched from "clear all the baddies out of this room", to "how the hell do I open this door?" to nice little mini-platform games, climbing fights across ropes and walls, etc. There was so much variety, you didn't get fatigued from combat, which is still the core of GOW series.

However, all this means is that HS simply isn't going to dethrone GOW and become another classic. There are plenty of games with repetitive gameplay, especially first person shooters (well, once in a while they throw in a sneaking mission, or escort mission, or minor puzzle. Games like System Shock being an exception)

The problem is, HS had such anticipation, it might not be able to live up to people's expectations as the PS3 system seller that everyone dreamed of, but merely, a beautiful looking game with good, but not great, gameplay.

I think every review is going to end up comparing it to GOW, and that's going to be it's problem.

What about everyone who has played the demo nigh on a 100 times and love doing this thing over and over again, since they are finding depth in the combat and perfecting ways of using it effectively?

I always hated the platforming and puzzling in GOW - I found it too simple after playing the amazing Prince of Persia games - but may I say there that I didn't like the combat too much in POP. So let's make this clear - POP would have been better with less combat and "more of the same" platforming that kept on building and becoming more challenging. And HS would be best with "more of the same" combat that keeps on building, getting more challenging and more exciting. We'll see aye.

Well said, the talk about God of War with a chick was always annoying as hell to me. God of War had already proven itself and new upcoming games shouldn't be put so much under pressure and compared to a game that many including me hold as "best on PS2" game.

I think we need to see more reviews, but it seems God of War is still the undisputed champion.

I'm suprised no one saw this IGN review from last night... not good (7.0)

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/815/815031p1.html
it was posted. FWIW, IGN UK is separate from IGN. IGN UK, IGN and IGN AU all give their own reviews and they're not always similar. for example, IGN UK gave Resistance an 8/10 but IGN gave it a 9.1. IGN UK gave Lost Planet a 7.1 and IGN gave it an 8.5.

i don't know about IGN, but i quite enjoyed the gameplay in the demo.

This is why we look at averages. Some reviewers just may not like the game type they are reviewing. Picking one 7/10 and writing off HS is plain dumb.

The Swedish magazine 'Level' gave it a 7/10.

Same issue:
BioShock 8/10
Super Paper Mario 7/10
Rouge Galay 7/10
Heavenly Sword 7/10 (6 pages review, so it has depth)
Blue Dragon 6/10

They said it were about 6h long. But the loved the production value and the graphics.

This game is still the most anticipated PS3 game for me.

Unfortunately, it may not be the killer app that I thought it was going to be although it is still the game I will likely pick up first when I get one. I'm mildly disappointed that 2 of the most anticipated games (Lair being the other one) are not garnishing the overall scores that the PS3 really needs right now. For 2007 what is left to really fill in the PS3 killer app title?

From my point of view, Uncharted and Ratchet are the 2 left in 2007. Am I missing something?

My list includes LBP but I am not your typical hardcore gamers.

My personal target list also include Eye of Judgement which is said to be priced @ $60 with PS Eye.

Well lets keep in mind the demo is incredibly short and PS3s library is still totally lacking an abundance of good games, let alone high profile ones.

Kind of a niche title in my opinion. I personally dont class my multiplayer games with high profile story driven ones im looking forward to.

Its a niche title that will generate a lot of interest, assuming that its well done. I don't doubt it will outsell a game like lair.

<edit> Heavenly sword I don't know about saleswise, its not my type of game, but it looks really beautiful.

Unfortuantely, fast moving FPS games cause motion sickness with me. From the vids I've seen of their past games, I think this will be a rental first and more than likely something I will pick up on the 360 (because of Achievement and I am a Gamerscore whore when competing with friends) unless it proves to be significantly superior on the PS3. I've got Halo 3 and Bioshock to keep me happy on the FPS side for this year.

I still have high hopes for Heavenly Sword. That along with NGS (unless it gets ported to the 360) are among the first titles I will pick up...maybe even Motorstorm if I can find it used.

LBP is still unproven in my eyes and can easily flop or be very well received. I think it's the newness of the idea that really excites people.
