I don't understand why people are so upset about reviews. Giving score is always a bit tricky as you judge 2-3 years of work of many people and you have to at the same time tell consumer if he would like to buy that game - you have to be really fair with him... with a single number. But if you truely enjoy your time with a game (or know you would), why do you care so much about that number? Let's take Eurogamer and Halo for example. They gave it "only" 8/10 because at the time they felt that repetetive levels design is that serious flaw that they can't score it higher despite all the awesomeness. 5 years later on Xbox' 5th anniversary they said it was the best Xbox game, despite the fact that they rated it only 8. Replayability and multiplayer gave the game long life, which reviewer couldn't say at the time. Maybe they'll say Heavenly Sword was one of the best games on PS3 5 years from now... But now reviewer feels that because of its flaws it deserves a 7 despite incredible graphics.

Reviews are not about "making people happy", they are about determining the value of a game. Every time a potential AAA title is released with less than stellar reviews there is this backlash amongst fans. I dont doubt that the game isnt the second coming but its not as if it is getting "bad" reviews. One can pick and choose whatever review suits there means but then we arent judging by the merit of the review we are judging by which site/mag placates us the best.

Demeaning and belittling the reviews or those responsible for them is childish at best, regardless of who is or isnt a social being.

Oh and both Oblivion and Bioshock have recieved very high reviews everywhere so its not as if a 10/10 is outrageous.

For some reason you give good arguments but can not go one step further: review is there not to give some universal truth about a game (because there is no such truth, as you stated), reviews are about: "make people who read us happy", and I'm not so happy with these reviews.

Just... wow.

That is kind of sort of really totally the opposite of my point :|

Its not about a review not making them happy. People will naturally complain if they feel a game gets the reviews that do not determine the value they believe it deserves.

Sing it from the roof tops... errr, wait, the game comes out in a little over a week. So how do all these complainers know it deserves a higher review based on the "value" they think it has?

Further, there is a difference between disagree with a reviewer -- I won't argue with that -- than calling those that disagree not credible (especially when the bigger, more reliable sites tend to agree) and basing your content mostly on the score given than the actual complaints about the game itself.

Yeah, yeah, after 10/10 to Oblivion and Bioshock it's hard to argue that Eurogamer completely lost any possible credibility.

Oblivion and Bioshock are the two of the three highest rated games that has been released for any platform the past 3 years on gamerankings.

It is mostly a suspicion regarding the credibility of the review I believe and not about calling sites non-credible (although some were considered non-credible based on their background and way too high scores they gave for HS like Tilt and playstation magazines).

Most likely consumers cant be 100% correct or sure since they didnt have enough experience. But perhaps they question the reasons they gave it low scores based on the limited experience they had with the demo, comparisons with other reviews, and experience with other similar games.

For example there are parts in the review I find vague. In particular there are some arguments in the review that were supposed to explain the low score but were totally ignored in other higher scored games despite that they also had similar issues or others. Other games seem to get away with it and get better reviews. If this wasnt the case it would have been easier for people to accept some scores. Like something similar to Edge that is strict with every title and does not do exceptions. People accept EDGE's reviews easier even if they low score games that get 9s or 8s in other places because they know how it reviews.

Anyways it wont be far until we hear people's personal experienes with the full game so we will know for sure soon.

I think all reviews are credible devices for getting some information on the experiences of the individual reviewing the game. That doesn't mean that the review will not be biased towards the reviewers expectations and opinions.

I've always treated reviews as a way of getting some inside view of what a game is about not how well the reviewer can play the game. I make my buying decisions based on whether the game sounds interesting and appeals to my gaming taste.

Basically review scoring is a necessary evil in a competitive culture but can be totally ignored.

Well said!

Same as with the Lair thread. The general discussion about review bias is entirely unwanted in games threads. It's completely devoid of any evidence or data and surprise surprise completely worthless.

If you're ready again to discuss Heavenly Sword, feel free to open a new thread.
