Need help getting Metal Geared

wireframe

Veteran
So I recently bought a PS2 and played Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and thought it was a wonderful game. Now I need to get the first games in the series, if for no other reason than to acquaint myself with some characters I read may make a reappearance in MGS 4. I see lots of versions of MGS 1 and 2. Which ones should I be looking out for? I figure Metal Gear Solid 2 should be the "Substance" version, but MGS 1 seems to have lots of different "bundles" concerning extras and so. Please help me figure out which exact boxes I need. Links are appreciated. My Playstation 2 is PAL region. Thanks in advance.

I would recommend starting with MGS:Twin Snakes on the GameCube. This is a remake of MGS1.

If you don't want to do that, then the original release of MGS1 on the PS1 is perfectly acceptable. MGS:Intergral has a lot of extras, but the core story is the same.

For MGS2, you should get MGS2:Substance if you can. The extras here add a lot of gameplay and you also get the Document of MGS disc which is excellent.

MGS3:Subsistence will be of interest if you want to see the original MSX games that started MGS. It also has the new 3rd person camera, which should give the game a different feel.

With MGS1 & MGS2 I would advise turning the scanner off, this makes the game a lot harder. If you started with MGS3 you will be used to playing without the scanner.

I would also recommend reading FAQs after you have finished the games. There is a lot of quirky content you might have missed, they are worth at least 2 play throughts imho.

I am not going to buy a new console just to play these games unless I absolutely have to. Myabe i wasn't clear, but my main confusion is about which "combo packs" have what and are available for what systme (must be PAL PS2 to work for me).

Again, this sounds simple, but I don't think you can find the original in stores, so it would have to be Ebay (not preferred). Then I see Titanium Pack...Platinum Pack...but which is what? I want the LOT!

This is the only one that I am pretty certain about. MGS2 Substance it is. However, in all the re-releases and what-have-you, I thought maybe there was now an even better one. It's very consfusing because the PAL version of MGS 3 is different and includes more material than the NTSC one. Then I guess they have Subsistence to cover for that and more...so you get this weird overlap.

MGS3:Subsistence will be of interest if you want to see the original MSX games that started MGS. It also has the new 3rd person camera, which should give the game a different feel.

Are you saying they have fully playable versions of these early games on the PS 2 or are these videos and images we are talking about?

Thanks for your response. :smile:

I just want to repeat this for anyone else reading. Basically, what I want is MGS 1 and MGS 2. I already have the PAL version of MGS3: Snake Eater, but I may look into getting Subsistence as well. You can see the problem if you look at MGS 3. The original NTSC and PAL version are different and then you get Subsistence. So, the question there would be: are PAL and NTSC MGS3: Subsistence identical and include everything? For MGS 1 and 2 there are also lots of different combos and this is what I need help sifting through.

Perhaps it's not obvious to everyone, but these games are not that easy to find in a store for me. The stores are packed with 5 gazillion new games, but these are too old for them to keep in stock. This probably means I will have to order the game and if I am going to do that I want to make sure I order the right version. I mean version as in combo pack.

Why oh why couldn't they just released a Super Boxed Set for MGS 3 with the two previous ones? I bet MGS 1 fits on a memory stick. :p

try visiting videorental stores, like in my area ,they have a bunch of old games for rent, and maybe you can ask to buy it from them, since they are old and nobody rents them anymore.

btw, I bought MGS2 platinum for only 15euro shipped from an online shop in belgium (DVD, music, games store)

If you just want to play the game to get familiar with the characters, the original Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2 on the PS1 and PS2 would be fine.

Substance and Subsistence are just "expansion packs" if you will. Subsistence will be definitely worth it since it has online play.

Metal Gear Solid 1 for the PS1 has a "VR mission" extra IIRC, don't get that.

This is precisely what I am after. I am not interested in MSX etc, because that will just make things more difficult than they already are. (It seems like MGS3: Subsitence includes this so that makes it a no-brainer. Will get and donate current MGS3:Snake Eater to charity ;))

Exactly. But they add stuff and I don't want to end up having to hunt down these expansions separately and then have to hunt down the original version that they are compatible with. See the problem? I just don't know what "pack" I need to get to avoid this for MGS 1.

Metal Gear Solid 1 for the PS1 has a "VR mission" extra IIRC, don't get that.
Well, that's exactly what I want and some hunting revealed there were several different combos with extra VR stuff and-what-have-you. I don't even think I will be able to find the original MGS 1.

LOL. Nobody is understanding my problem because maybe it is not a problem where they live or they bought the game when it was new and don't see how the progression they went through is no longer necessary or even available. These games, with the exception of MGS2: Substance are not easy to find. I even have a problem finding that one.

I guess I could reduce it to this: Does MGS 1 Platinum include the VR missions, etc?

If I recollect correctly there is:

MGS 1 original - I don't think I will be able to find this.
MGS 1 VR Pack - only VR mission and requires Orignal (see above)
MGS 1 Original + VR Pack combo
MGS 1 Greatest Hits
MGS 1 Platinum - not sure what this one includes, but I think this one is the last produced so it might be easiest to find.

Remember, I need it to be PAL. Maybe some of these don't even exist for PAL, I dunno. That's where you come in. :smile:

It really comes down to this:

I will walk into the store and say "Do you have Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2?"

The clerk will say "No, but you may be able to order it."

At this point I will need to know what to ask for and I don't want to shaft myself, waiting a month or more, by ordering the wrong box.

I think we have Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance sorted, so that's what I'll ask for, but what about Metal Gear Solid 1?

Some Options:

"I need Metal Gear Solid 1: Platinum"

"I need Metal Gear Solid : Greatest Hits"

"I need Metal Gear Solid 1 Premium Edition" <making this up>

I will most likely be told some of them are not available so I need to know what alternatives I have and what those alternatives mean.

Let me propose a list and someone tell me if I am wrong, missing something, or if some of these don't exist for PAL:

I need:

1. Metal Gear Solid Greatest Hits (Should provide Metal Gear Solid + VR Missions)
2. Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance (Provides MGS 2 Sons of Liberty + added extras)
3. The Document of Metal Gear Solid 2 (Making of interactive feature)
4. Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence (this will give me the original Metal Gear games from the MSX, now playable on PS2)

Again, thanks for all your responses. They are much appreciated in this quest to get Geared up. ;)

Well it's going to be tough to find a copy of anything Metal Gear 1. I've found some copies at EB in the used games section of old PS1, so it's out there and more "findable" than a copy of Ico. Metal Gear solid 2, i haven't seen a copy of substance in any used games section but plenty of the Sons of Liberty original.

Good luck. I'd check all the smaller games stores, the major retailers just sell the newest and hottest items...

MGS is my most cherished series, I would have awarded Oscar to Hideo Kojima if I could. It took games to next level, simply awesome.

OT: Will Meryl be back in MGS4? I want her back.

There is rumour she will be back as her picture was on an early poster. Her role, o whether or not it's her, is yet to be pinned down.

Poster in question.

She is the second character from the left.

Oh Noes!!!! :LOL:

I love the Metal Gear Solid 4 Gamefaqs board, its very amusing

Note: As weird as the posters on that board can be, there also very speculative in that they HAVE hit the nail on the head a few times with MGS3. So I would avoid it like the plague, like I've been recently.

MGS is a little hard to find all new unless it is the platinum version. Substance however can still be acquired brand new PAL format, I think it bombed hard. VR missions, snake missions, sons of liberty, documentary and OTHER extras are on the Substance collection wich is 2 discs. I got my copy a month ago.

Hence this thread. ;)

Question is, does that Platinum release include the VR Missions or not? I still cannot figure this out.

Yeah, I think this is the one I will have least problems with. Are you saying "The Document" is included with Substance? If so, that would make it even easier.

If you can eyeball a Platinum edition, check for the number of discs on the package. Stand-alone MGS comes in 2 CDs whilst the VR missions is on a separate CD, making it 3 CDs in total. Hunt around online gamestores and see if they have this edition listed. Some of them might print out the number of discs, or even have a scan of the front and back covers that you can glean more info from.

Alternatively you could also hunt down the PC version (published by Microsoft, of all people :p) which also includes the VR missions.

Yup. Substance is a 2 disc collection Here is what is says on the back of the case:

Disc 1:

* Metal Gear Solid 2 - Sons Of Liberty
* 350 VR-missions
* 150 Alternative missions
* Snake Tales (basically play as Snake in the original Sons of Liberty story line)
* Solid Snake Skateboarding

Disc 2:

* brand New Interactive DVD "Document of MGS2"
* Explore exclusive and previously unreleased material like the original game plan
* Still Images
* 3D models of characters, Mechanis and Backgrounds with rotation and zooming
* Play the Game Music
* More info about the creation of the game like how it was programmed
* And much more...

Thank you very much. :smile:

For some reason, up until now, I have only seen disc 1 listed, or those features, even on Konami's site, with no mention of the second disc. This should prevent me from doubling up on "The Document" so I think you just saved me $50. Cheers. :smile:

Good idea. I went to Amazon.co.uk and, would you believe it, the Platinum version is listed there as including the VR missions (yay!). I could have sworn that no detailed description was available earlier when I looked. There is also something called a "Twin Pack," which I assume is the bundle that was made at the time when the game was still new.

Alternatively you could also hunt down the PC version (published by Microsoft, of all people :p) which also includes the VR missions.
I think I will be avoiding the PC for this as I want it to be a Playstation experience. It's fun to see things from a new perspective.

Ok, so I think we are done here and I have probably been a complete doofus, confusing myself much more than needed to get my fix. It looks like the following list should get me the "lot":

1. Metal Gear Solid Platinum
2. Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance
3. Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence

Thanks for your input, all! :D
