This was true back in the day and still true for most cheaper compacts, however, you can buy compacts that work with dimmers now, but like I mentioned previously they're more expensive and are at least $10 each.

As to IKEA bulbs, I tried one to see if it was warm or cool white. When I found out it was warm, I returned it. I don't like warm white because it casts a yellowish hew to everything. I do use a warm white flourescent tube purchased from IKEA which is mounted under my top shelf of my computer table. My room is painted blue so it's not so bad. I might get a cooler white tube replacement in the future though.
