My sister and brother in law ordered a complete home theater system today for $5K.

Here's the story. They had already paid for a 60" SONY RP LCD TV at Circuit City and around $600 worth of cables and a powerstrip and were waiting for the tv to be delivered the following day. I was told about the purchase and asked if it was a good deal since I'm the expert when it comes to electronics/computers.

So here's what followed. My brother in law wanted the 60" SONY Grand WEGA 3LCD Rear Projection HDTV because he wants a big screen and likes the SONY style and brand. I told him that RP LCD tvs need to have their bulbs replaced every couple of years and that it costs like $300 and the fact the picture isn't as clear as a plasmas, but that still didn't convince him since size and brand is more important to him.

My sister OTOH trusts my expertise on the matter and asked me which plasma to get. I told her she could get a 50" Panasonic plasma for around $3,200 so she said they should get that instead of the SONY RP LCD, but my brother in law still wanted the RP LCD so I told him to get another brand and also go with DLP instead of LCD because SONYs are overpriced but that still didn't convince him. However my sisteer had the final say on what they would get.

So my sister said she would pay for the plasma to make my brother in law happy, but the money wasn't really important to him and that he still wanted the SONY RP LCD. My sister then got angry and said he should buy the RP LCD with his own money for the living room and that she'd buy the plasma for the bedroom with hers. At this point he said they didn't need to buy two tvs at this time so then agreed to get the plasma. My sister then says no just get the RP LCD if it that's what he really wants.

So finally I found the SONY 60" Grand WEGA 3LCD Rear Projection HDTV

KDF-60WF655 online for less than $2,500 shipping included no sales tax and canceled the TV purchase from CC and should arrive next week. The other stuff they purchased from CC was all returned unopened. It included two pairs of Monster THX Ultra certified component cables costing $130 each, 4 pairs of Monster audio cables around $90 each, and a glorified Monster surge suppressor/powerstrip for around $150.

Now to the audio side of things. My brother in law likes JBL and BOSE speakers because his friends are brain washing him into thinking they're really good. His friends could also get discounts on those brands, but according to what he has now and what his friends charged him for it, it turns out he's getting rippedoff instead.

Anyway he basically let me pick and choose everything for the audio side so this is what I got all for around $1500 shipping included no tax.

Yamaha HTR-5860SL 7.1-Channel Digital Home Theater Receiver
2 Yamaha NS-777 Three-Way floor standing front towers
1 Yamaha NS-C444 Two-Way Center Channel Speaker
4 Yamaha NS-333 Two-Way Bookshelf Speakers
1 Yamaha YST-SW315 Powered Subwoofer

My sister wanted a bigger subwoofer so when they move to a bigger house, but I told her she could always add a second one later if required. We also got a cheap Toshiba SD-5980 upconverting DVD player at BestBuy for $130 to go with everything. We also purchased a Tech Craft TV stand at CC for the RP LCD TV and four height adjustable OmniMount bookshelf speaker stands for the 4 surround speakers. I've been given the task of setting up and configuring everything when the rest of the stuff arrives in a couple weeks.

money to burn ha? hehe
nice setup

i wish i could buy a 60" HDTV SONY for 2000euro ...

I would kinda think that Yamaha speakers would be on the same level as JBL, and Bose (well actually Bose may not be on their level altogether...)

How much would that SONY cost in Europe?
We don't even have HDTV here.
(A similarly sized SONY LCD RP is available for about 2000 Euros, though.)

PS: Oh no, not the BOSE discussion again. :devilish:

JBLs are pretty good but for the same price the Yamahas are better IMO.

Nice dude.
How low does the sub go to?

It has a 10" woofer and the specs say 20 - 160 Hz, but it doesn't say at what dB level. Cool thing is it's rated at 250W RMS so it should be plenty loud.

Hmm.
needs more 15:D
Do the specs say the excursion of the driver?

It uses active servo to control woofer excursion so it's more efficient than traditional passive designs. My sister's living room isn't huge or anything so it should good enough especially if I place the sub in a corner to reenforce the bass.

oh
Where can I find out more about this active servo thing?

It would probably rattle the windows and picture frames.
That's the point:D
In my small office even my shitty 5300s rattle picture frames.. not at 20hz of course.
They cut out around 35 hz I believe (test tones).
damn 6.5 wussy "sub".
my 560z would go down to about 30hz.

Nice setup, but why such a cheap dvd player? Seems like it´s bottlenecking the rest of the stuff.

Well I told them to save their money for HD DVD instead of paying more for just an upconverting DVD player that's why we went for the cheaper Toshiba. They could've gotten a $250 Denon or something, but the image quality would just be marginally better. There's only so much quality you can squeeze out of DVD.

i must ask,
can you see THAT MUCH difference between a 250$ dvd player and a yakumo dvd player of 60$ that I have?
