[Multiplat] Battlefield 3

The console versions don't look fantastic, though that's not all too surprising considering it seems like it was designed for the PC and ported to the consoles rather than the other way round.

From what i'v seen and read about both the PC and console versions, that statement doesn't hold any truth to it.

PC vs 360 vs PS3 video comparison:

Quality makes it pretty useless though, but I haven't seen any other cross platform comparison vids.

Quite a bit of tearing in the PS3 version in the beginning. I wouldn't be too concerned as it still is a beta so tearing can be improved/removed. Also, SP campaigns usually look better than MP.

They all look similar to my untrained eye with the PC version having the most obvious edge in the lighting.

Which one? I'm really just judging from the few 360/PS3 videos I've seen, and it just doesn't look that great to me. Not trying to start an argument so I won't go further than that, and wait until the release to make any final judgements.

You're going to have to now! ;) At least, explain what's not great. Framerate, art, IQ, lighting, yada yada. You don't have to refer to other titles to avoid a stupid title war, but you should be able to pinpoint what it is that you feel is letting the game down.

Because reply like this appears a bit overreacted. We can talking of disappointment in the beta looking at the tearing, pop in & fps; but isn't it the normality of things in a beta or I'm wrong?:???:

Actually, scratch that. I looked at a different video and it doesn't seem as bad as I initially thought (this shot in particular looked terrible). I'll try the 360 beta myself and get back to you :p

Have any of you defending it actually played it on console (you should as it's now freely available)

From what I just played, of the outdoor area, it looks pretty bad to average, no way to sugar coat it, and i see why some say BC2 looks better. Also loaded with bugs.

Single player I'm sure will be different, Guillotine trailer looks good, but being MP and beta didn't stop people from tearing up Crysis 2's beta.

Here cell phone offscreen pic I just took of some terrible reflection/clipping glitch right as I spawned. Besides the glitch, it looks bad anyway

I mean it's not horrible (besides the bugs) but outdoors I would describe it as below average for this gen, at least in this one beta MP level.

I agree with this guy on GAF

It feels like a game released four years ago to me. I've gamed a lot on 360 in that time and I'm not exaggerating.

It sort of reminds me almost of Battlefield: Modern Combat from the ultra early days of 360.

There seems to be a ton of negative feedback on GAF. I wonder if this beta can even seriously hurt sales.

MP Betas have terrible level choices, it seems. I mean, Crysis 2 had absolutely stunning levels like Lighthouse, Liberty Island and Sanctuary (especially Sanctuary, just gorgeous), and they chose Skyline and Pier 17, arguably the worst looking maps in the game.

I'm going to see for myself, though. If it's as bad as you say, then I'll stand by what I said. I'm hoping I'll be surprised. Even so, if it's Battlefield, I'm sure the gameplay will make up for any graphical flaws :)

Been playing the PS3 version for an hour or so. Looks pretty good in my eyes. Quite similar to one of the early Crysis 2 single player levels actually. Framerate seems to dip into the mid 20's for a bit of the time, screen tearing is present but not as bad as people are making out. Lighting is great, textures for the most are decent. Sound is as fantastic as ever. I'm not a massive online kinda player so i'll leave gameplay discussions for others. Based on this though, i'd be eagerly awaiting the single player experience for sure.

Well, the lag is definitely the worst I've ever seen in a game. I can't even move away from the spawn point without instantly teleporting back.

I'm in Australia, though, if that makes any difference.

Ya' think that may have something to do with it mate ;)

Sorry, non-NA peeps usually get the short stick on these things. Bazillion People + (probably) NA only servers means your experience is going to be less than ideal.

A few impressions on the graphics, since I can only look around :p
- It doesn't seem to look that much better than Bad Company 1/2. This is judging from the BC1 demo and the BF3 multiplayer beta.
- Texture streaming is very aggressive
- Lighting looks a bit dated when compared to certain other games. Not so much the brightness but the way objects reflect light. Even with FXAA, it's too harsh, for a lack of a better word.
- Like with BC1/BC2, shadows are pixellated, there doesn't seem to be any smoothing at all. The movement along the grid is very obvious.
- Particle effects seem pretty crappy, honestly. Bullet impacts and muzzle flashes in particular.
- I didn't notice any pop-in but the map was very empty anyway, often to the point where there would be no objects at all and just a continuous stretch of textured grass or pavement.

Those I just my on-the-spot impressions. I wouldn't take them to heart, since it's only a beta after all. It's not bad by any stretch, but it's certainly not that great compared to more recent shooters. As I said before, it feels like a PC game ported to the console with large amounts of it stripped out.

Just played it on PS3. Was 1.3GB download.

Initial impression, the menus are very clean and stylish. As soon as I joined the match I noticed the textures seem low res compared to BFBC2 and there is texture pop-in but it generally loads very quick. Texture filtering also looked identical to BC2. The shadow map is exactly the same resolution as Bad Company 2 with the same filtering (I've played BFBC2 MP over 600 hours). The gun sway is much more realistic when moving the camera around. MLAA appears different to other games that use it as it isn't very aggressive and I noticed many edges getting no anti-aliasing at all and then they would get it if I moved around a bit, the colour scheme works very well to hide aliasing anyway. There is less lag and 'rubber banding' of your movement is completely absent, a massive improvement over BC2. When you are close to walls you can see the SSAO in affect, remarkably high quality - probably the best console SSAO implementation I've seen. The gun and character models are much more detailed to BC2. I notices quite a few bugs, I managed to fall through the map several times. The 'dead point' of the analogue sticks is larger and thus feels less accurate when aiming than in BC2 and I couldn't find an option to change this, also the camera acceleration when looking around is different to BC2. The sound was mind-blowing, very vivid, real and less 'in-your-face' than BC2. Framerate was very solid so long as no smoke was on the screen; smoke from grenades, destruction and the transition between objectives brings the framerate down to mid to low 20s and introduces screen-tearing all over the screen, control response is significantly affected. Animations were much more fluid and dynamic than BC2, the ANT tech from FIFA really helped. The water and smoke look a lot better than BC2, the water seems to be doing active reflection of scenery. There was also way more normal mapping and specular and reflective objects than in BC2 making everything seem more real. Overall it feels like an immersive evolution of BC2, I hope they fix a bunch of the bugs and change or allow dead zone reduction. Very impressed.

Thanks for the impressions ! I was wondering whether I should get DEHR first in October since BF3 clearly doesn't need my help. GAF will continue to steamroll people in MP as usual, EA will earn tons of $$$ from this franchise anyway. If the sound system is great, and the destruction is fun, I will keep it as a October purchase. Did I miss any comments on destruction ? Also I heard there are jet planes in the game ?

I would imagine that the downloadable nature of the beta means that you might have low res assets? Could well be better textures in the final.
