MSAA + HDR benchmarks ?

Well, if precision is an issue, you'll notice banding.

Limited dynamic range is more of a limit on the artwork, however. Also, things like reflections won't be as bright as they should be with full dynamic range. But it'd be very hard to notice the limitations without a full dynamic range render path to compare against.

Oh.. duh...

By the way, if precision is an issue, you're most likely to notice it either in the brightest or darkest areas of the map. Though I suspect the Valve team were very careful to limit the dynamic range of the map so that this doesn't become an issue.

Any news on the Farcry HDR+AA patch yet?

I don't understand it, it took 5 minutes to get AA+HDR working for X1K, but now we are 5 weeks from X1K launch and X1K owners still can't use it?

AFAIK Its up to Ubisoft now. Ubi have to Q&A it and then release it. Whether they will or not is another question, especially seeing as Crytek are no longer contracted to them and, I've heard, they were only contracted to support up to three patches.

Thnx, i've contacted Ubisoft, hopefully they can be more specific about a date.

Btw, can we expect improvements with this FP HDR performance? Did Ati make any comments on this subject? A 64% impact on 1600x1200 is bizarro.

They probably don't want to pay for it.

Imo, it's Ati who needs to pay for it. Don't they want something to showcase the X1K capabilities? I would be VERY dissapointed if the patch won't come, because it's one of the major points why i prefer X1K over GF7.

On the other site, i won't be surprised if this patch will never see daylight. Ati lacks in promoting their features in real games (3Dc anyone?). It almost looks like that they refuse to invest money in game developing (9 out of 10 games are TWIMTPB. Ati's GITG is a joke).

Can't feel not disappointed by X1800's results in Xbitlabs' 512 Mb GTX review.

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/geforce7800gtx512_14.html

also

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/geforce7800gtx512_14.html

here they only mention using max Eye candy, so I think they have activated HDR also.

They use 5.9 Catalyst, and ForceWare 81.89.

Are these results due to the unoptimised driver ? Also I wonder why in case of the X1800 products there are no mimimum and maximum fps values for the Far Cray HDR test ? There only is a single value. Is that an average ? Is it the max fps ?

Cat 5.9 no aa/af

Cat 5.11 16xaf no aa, Nvidia AF optimizations disabled. Then with 4xaa

Currently the x1800xt Farcry HDR performace is between the 6800U and 7800GT,Keeping in mind minimum framerates I doubt anything above 1024x768 with 4xaa is playable. If these reviewers used HDR 7, maybe 1280x1024 with 2xaa 8xaf HDR 1, might be playable. We will see if ATI can get the performace up.

NV cards cant do AA with HDR on in Farcry. There is supposed to be a patch for Farcry to enable X1800 cards cards do it though.

I don't think anybody said they did.

I used HDR 2.

Judging how the results scale with resolution from all four of those graphs, and applying this to the results from the second set of benchmarks, the following are likely the best playability settings for each of our heavyweights:

512MB X1800XT: 1024x768, 4xAA - ~60fps (6xAA may be >55fps too)
256MB 7800GTX: 1280x1024, noAA - ~60fps
512MB 7800GTX: 1600x1200, noAA - 56.7fps

So even if ATI doesn't improve their scores, I think if you compared the image output side by side then the X1800XT would win by a decent margin. It'll be way better than the 256MB 7800GTX's output, and notably better than the 512MB GTX's output even considering the 36% resolution loss per axis.

My guess is ATI will get even better scores here with newer drivers, and remember that FarCry is only one game and its HDR was built only with NVidia's architecture in mind.
