MS E3 2012 conference

Can't say I care about games on these ancient boxes, but the non gaming stuff is interesting. Especially Xbox Music with over 30 million tracks! Looks like I may be ditching Spotify if that turns out to be true. Smart glass looks intruiging as well. I'll see tomorrow when I'm at e3 if anything pops out at me game wise, but somehow I doubt it.

Well then we are very different...the lack of games is extreme on the xbox, everything else is lame as hell and absolutely uninteresting for me as a gamer...all screams: seen that, done that...nothing new in town! Booooo!

Bring on games, bring on exclusives...at least HALO4 looked good!

I have to agree that at least Halo 4 looked interesting. For me, that was probably the first time since the original Xbox that I was intrigued by the franchise.

oh boy...

extreme lack of games? cus the 40,000 third party games dont exist? and all the xbla highlights (lots of exclusives too, deadlight and dust elysian tale look great)

and forza horizon, gears judgement, halo 4, think that's as many triple a core coming soon as the other big competitor last i checked...

Well I admit I prolly am different, I just don't see how a gamer could still tolerate current gen consoles, it just doesn't make sense to me at all given how low tech they are. I've already got a backlog of games on pc that I just can't catch up to so I'm good on quality games for the foreseable future. Exclusives, etc are a waste of time and funding in my mind, I'm glad Microsoft isn't going there. Bring on more services, intergration, more Kinect voice support, ties to phone and tablets, etc, that's where the consoles interest me. For gaming on console it's all about indie, arcade and Kinect to me now, and there's lots of good stuff there already for that. Maybe I am just getting old, but my favorite parts of the conference are the non gaming stuff, I hope they have more of that to show. AAA games on 2005 hardware are of little interest to me now. I'm more intersted in Pinball Arcade dlc on XBLive than I am in any console exclusive. So yeah I am different :)

yeah i just dont see why people act like apps and stuff are bad now. geez. it's not like they effect you if you dont care.

seems the new narrative is "too many apps they dont care about gamers" I guess cus it's harder to complain "too much Kinect they dont care about gamers" this year. Oh and throw in a "no new IP" talking point, which I dont remember last year being an issue when the other guy was touting a big "part 3"...

I don't see that much of a problem..
Gears of War spin-off out,at the latest, in September, new console out in November. There is no way they can wait until 2014. Way too much risky..

Well: halo4 and the new gears...2 games!

As joker said, third party games should be bought on pc! I don't care for PC gaming as long as HALO4 is only on XBOX...and I really do not think that this is a waste of investment!

But two exclusive games I care per year for a gaming console is not enough for me...

Well, good for you if you are happy! I really wonder: so you do not want more exclusive AAA titles? You are happy to watch tv and listen to music instead of gaming? You are happy with the kinect titles shown? Well, again, good for you!

But it is really bad, though, in that regard. You almost have to hope that the staples reinvent themselves seriously, and to some extent that is happening. The gaming bits are seriously boring, even though some of them make a lot of sense (Forza Horizon makes sense, and could potentially grab a lot of NFS fans that hovered between Forza and NFS and were happy with neither). Halo 4 I think is very promising in that despite being by a new developer, it dares to be fresh, certainly got me interested. But man, all this shooting. And then I'm not really seeing much diversity even in XBLA games - so many of them tend to target a similar type of audience, for which I think the Southpark game is perfect.

I'm glad they are improving the searching in the XNE, but seriously, that thing needs a major overhaul. Like the Giant Bomb guys have said, allow for a bit of profiling to you can give preference to certain types of content, like ... well ... games. They don't just need to post Apps, they need to App Store it up with all manner of recommendations, rankings, sorting options, top lists and so forth. That will help all genres, but certainly also smaller games.

Overall, with a very few genres excepted, I think a game should not have more than two sequels on the same platform. Make something new after that, please, or reinvent the game so much that you get a Mario type effect - IP is the same, but the gameplay can change dramatically at times.

I really wonder what the other two big guns will have on show.

I do really like smartglass though (won't be long before people will call it smartass or something like that I'm sure), and I wonder if there is room there for genuinely different styles of control methods. There is a lot of potential for it in multi-media interaction as well as games I think, but they need to show it. It's still relatively early days, but a good test will be once the Nintendo conference is over, which will be 100% Wii U games, how many of those experiences can be fairly comfortably matched with smartglass.

I happen to really like those two games...and PC gaming is not generally for me. Plus the imo superior controller, online etc outweigh the 2 extra er, being kind, mid-tier exclusives per year you lose. But hey if those two extra middling per year mean a lot to you, OK. anyways could be wrong but the rest of this year doesn't sony just have 1 (last of us)?

Pc has almost no triple A exclusives, just "better graphics" (not in any meaningful way of course, or I would be more into PC gaming, but supposedly). (Although Diablo 3 certainly wont win any graphics awards, rather looking like a $10 game, and is the PC's big exclusive) If you look at metacritic the Pc wont get close in the highest rated exclusives categories as consoles.

Anyways I do not know why lusting for better graphics is some shallow, "bad" goal in most gaming discussion (EG, next gen tech thread :p ) but normally it is ok, lauded whenever PC gamers bring it up. Why are PC gamers not bad and shallow then?

Plus so many games get delayed on PC. I just dont see how any real gamer can be like "HEY I REALLY WANT TO PLAY GAME X" then be willing to wait months for it. That's so far from something I can understand. My mentality is if I want the game, and there's few each year I do, but for those few, I rush out day one and pay $60 for it. I have to have it ASAP.

But there is still a crapton of XBLA exclusives.

Honestly, Halo 4 looks better than nearly any other game on PC (Diablo 3 is what I like the most based on screenshots)

Well you know, I don't want to go there :) I will say that after gaming at 60fps for so long, I'm finding it extremely difficult to go back to 30fps.

But there is still a crapton of XBLA exclusives.

Yeah, it's mostly XBLive stuff that I want to see at e3 tomorrow. I'm honstly going more to just hook up with old friends though, but if I can see some good Kinect and XBLive games then bonus.

But it is really bad, though, in that regard.

There are new IP's, but few will be exclusive.

All I'm saying is I dont remember this new IP talking point coming up so much last year.

There's only one exclusive new disc based hardcore IP coming this year I can think of right now...and it's based on zombies lol, which might as well just be practically every other game and tv show in the last 5 years then.

I dont want new IP's for the sake of them.

And 360 is 7 years old, 8 next year, should not be surprising a few franchises have made more iterations than on the last one which lasted 4 years. But anyways Assassins Creeds and COD's are annual so...do you criticize all them as well?

I like the consoles for their exclusive titles! The rest on PC: not only better graphics, but cheaper as well (here in Europe at least)! You are right: later release is a pain: max payne was really difficult...but now I have a cheaper and better game :) If I really want the game...no chance to wait!!

Its true with xbla exclusives, Sine Mora is a great game!! But the budgets of those titles are small...I want big AAA titles a la HALO4...games which define the consol for me (HALO and GEARS)

________
Hm, by the way: what has our discussions to do with Sony???

I am talking about MS conference...don't care for Sony atm!

But I do have the feeling that Sony conference will be dissapointing as well: less exclusives but lots of unecessary entertainment stuff!

Pretty sure I complained then too, and I also dismissed the Last of Us as a game for me (hate zombie/horror).

(Ubisoft is pretty entertaining though so far, bit iffy on the presentation but A for effort)

Anyway, MS are in a good spot regardless. Just saw very few interesting things. I'd guess a bunch of top talent left and right is also already working on next-gen ...

All the big Ubi games are coming for all platforms... But it is the conference with the most substance so far, that's true :)

It was an interesting E3. I'm sure next year will be xbox next and alot of attention will be paid to it along with a slew of projects from MS's first party /2nd party teams .

To me this year was great because MS seems to be setting the basis for the xbox next's media functions. The 360 has grown so much from just being a game device and now the nike program and the glass program just show how far it comes.

The Glass program is interesting , while it seems very 1.0 quality level I can imagine when xbox next comes out MS can set the minimum spec for the tablets it connects too based on whats popular and those tablets can contribute greatly to the game experiance. Instead of spliting the $300-$400 entry fee like nintendo is doing and thus spliting the hardware power between the two devices , MS will be able to pick from the cream of the crop. An xbox next with a quad core tablet with 2 gigs of ram would make a great pairing and perhaps future verisons of Glass will allow you to pull a vita and play some games outside of the home.

Finally watched the briefing. I really like Halo 4. Looked really cool. Can't wait for it. Definitely pre-ordering it. Splinter Cell was also a big surprise. Reminded me of the fun I had with Chaos Theory. Might actually go back & play Conviction. Not real keen on Gears of War, finished the 2nd one but never played the 3rd. A prequel might be neat. What I really liked though was the new SmartGlass feature. No need for WiiU now. Interesting they decided to go cross platform. Will be neat to see how it works. Just need to decide on what tablet to get for myself.

Not sure if anybody noticed but there's a new Favorites feature buried in there...

Favorites. This is another request we’ve heard frequently. Favorites allows you to personalize the dashboard by saving your movies, TV, games, music and the web right to the home screen in the dashboard. Favorites will make it easier and faster than ever to get to your favorite content on Xbox and Xbox LIVE.

I've been asking for that for awhile. The new video content sounds great: more ESPN, Monday Night Football, Comedy Central, Weather Channel & Paramount Movies. No big surprise on Xbox Music & Video: Zune R.I.P. Internet Explorer on Xbox now? Makes more sense with the new means of interaction. Lets see if it's HTML5 powered. LOL BTW, The deeper search functionality & easier ways to get that content is a welcome feature.

Other games? Tomb Raider looked a little more interesting in gameplay. Still don't feel like Tomb Raider though. I also hope they'll improve the voice accent a little. Wreckateer, LocoCycle & Matter also look interesting. South Park looked pretty funny. Not a fan of Resident Evil or Call of Duty, but Black Ops 2 was interesting. Might go back to the others one day.

There was only one thing missing from today's events: Red Dead Redemption 2, make it happen!

BTW, here are links to official Microsoft announcements made today...

Here are my thoughts on the conference.

Halo 4 looks really good, the jungle scene looks kinda like Lost Planet 2 mixed with Metroid.
Splinter Cell looks good, gone are the overly shiny plastic y graphics from previous versions.
Tomb Raider is too action y, needs more explore-able areas.
RE6 seems to be even more action y than before not sure if that's a good thing, animations are kinda rough too.
Gears looks good.
COD BO2 doesn't look too good, graphics look dated.

Smartglass is cool and I can use my iPhone4 yay!! Also IE browser finally makes it onto Xbox with touch support for various devices..nice.

Games get announced by publishers year round. There won't be a shortage of games on PS3 or 360 in the next couple of years. There are so many gaming sites that it's easy to announce and start pushing a game well before E3 comes around. Hell, Rockstar doesn't seem to care about E3 in the slightest.
