Movie Reviews 2.0

Has anyone seen the trailer for the upcoming movie "The Town?" I'm a complete sucker for Jeremy Renner movies, plus it being filmed in the city I live in is an added bonus! I was a huge fan of the movie "Heat," revering it as one of the greatest action movies of our time, and this one looks pretty similar:

The Town is directed by Ben Affleck, which they seem to be keeping very quiet. He's making a carefully planned comeback. Gone Baby Gone was a decent movie, also directed by Ben Affleck, which they didn't mention in the ads at all. Seems he isn't the no-talent hack riding on Matt Damon's coattails that everyone thought he was.

I always liked him. It wasn't his fault that Armageddon sucked.

Anyway, finally saw Inception myself and loved every minute of it. It's exactly what I want from a big summer movie. It was huge, beautiful, thrilling and it didn't require a complete shut-down of major brain functions in order to get some enjoyment out of it.

Finally saw Kick-Ass and loved it. 8/10 for sure. Definitely overly violent and crass but entertaining from start to finish.

Scott Pilgrim vs the World has some LOLz to it. Oddly it was best outside of the video game fighting elements, with some great comic moments.

Repo Men: 6/10. Started promisingly, telegraphed a couple of major plot points, lost it's way and started breaking it's own internal rules and making characters particularly dumb before somewhat redeeming itself with a Philip K Dick style twist at the end. Forest Whitaker is always great, though somewhat wasted in this role. Could have been a lot more than it is.

After Life: 7/10. Interesting, though slow psychological horror/thriller with Liam Neeson and a mostly undressed Christina Ricci. It's a pity we don't see her in more big movies, she is still a remarkably interesting actress to look at - on screen, you can't help looking at her huge eyes. Once again though, the plot only works because at key moments, characters are dumb and don't do the obvious things that you or I would do. Like a lot of horror movies, they take the downbeat ending rather than a happy ever after.

Or in this case her other huge...er. Nevermind. :D

I'd give this one an 8/10, but then I'm particularly fond of horror movies and actually tried to collect every single horror movie ever made up until around 2002 or so. At that point there's just way to many "independant" (using that word extremely loosely) movie makers that think they can make horror movies with their friends and a consumer video camera.

And yes, agreed that it's a shame she isn't in more movies. I'm not sure whether she lost interest or Hollywood lost interest in her.

She looks terrific - that little black dress with the red hair when she turns up to dinner at the beginning, or later on when you see a close up of her face and her green/hazel eyes are quite remarkable, but I think she's at that age that Hollywood doesn't know what to do with her. She's not conventional looking, so I guess she has too interesting a-looking face for a lot of roles.

She still looks quite girlish, so she's not transitioning easily to playing a grown woman. She's just 30, so she's really in her prime as an actress and a grown woman, rather than the younger roles she's played for a long time. She does have a few movies listed for the next year, but quite a bit of her recent stuff seems to have been TV or voice acting.

Catching up on my CG movies...

Avatar: 3/10. Finally saw it, can't say I enjoyed it. Story was predictable and script was bad. Loved the environments but characters, both humans and the blue aliens were spooky. They lacked the expressions to overcome the cheesy lines they were given. The movie should have been one hour shorter. The actions just don’t feel as raw as T2 or even Titanic. I think the movie would be better without the military stuff and just be a documentary on the life of those blue aliens.

Up: 5/10. Started slow but I thought I was going to enjoy it when they started going up. Then the talking dog show up, I thought it was funny and cute, then more talking dogs show up, the story started going down hill from there and I can't wait for it to be over.

Still got a few more CG movies to watch... hope they're better than these.

You are a heartless creature.

I'll give Scott Pilgrim an 8/10. I really enjoyed the comics and thought they did a great job of capturing the erratic pacing of the comic. The casting was good and the humour worked, and Edgar Wright did a great job of paying homage to comic books and video games. That said, I think the average person will hate this movie. It is definitely not meant for everyone. For fans of the comic, some things have been changed, but it works. It's hard to put all six volumes into one movie.

Kick Ass. 8.5/10 Surprisingly very good. A little long but well done. Entertaining throughout.
The writer of the screenplay is also doing X-Men First Class (and she is also married to Johnathon Ross, who is a total comic book geek), so I'm hoping that the next X-Men may have some substance behind it.

I can't even give it a score. I started trying to watch it about 2-3 months ago, and never could get the interest to actually finish watching it. I guess that automatically makes it...

Avatar 0/10.

Maybe I'll sit down with it again here this week and see if I can finish it to give it a proper score, but I can't see it going much higher.

I hope they just pretend X-3 never happened and they bring back Patrick Stewart.

There was a post-credits shot in X3 showing a Prof X brother/clone or something (not that familiar w/ the comics TBH), so that would have provided an easy route for them to bring Stewart back if that was the direction they're going ... but it's not.

There's not many concrete details about the story ATM, even down to whether it's a reboot or a prequel, but it's definitely set in the past with a younger cast, James McAvoy is Prof X, Michael Fassbender is Magneto and so on.

I try my best to pretend X3 never happened ... :devilish:

Like DB I'm hoping for a better film but the same guy is still in charge of the studio and the film has the same truncated production schedule as X3 - it's due for release next June and they don't even start filming until next month - so I'm not gonna be to surprised if it turns into another mess.

They could pick up where X2 left off. Just replace, Scott, Jean and Storm with good actors and you got a great movie already.

I'm a bit torn on Xmen First Class. Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan are perfect fits.
