Movie Reviews 2.0

Anyone seen Antichrist? I've got it on Bluray (rented) and just wondering if it's as bad as people have been saying, before wasting 2 hours of my life...
I havent seen it, but Its on my 'must watch' list
von trier is always worth a watch (one of the best 100 directors of all time), Ive heard its a film u either will love or hate so take a chance

The Hangover isn't a bachelor party gone bad, because that's pretty much how any good bachelor party should go ;)

It isn't about bachelor party at all pretty much. It's about the day after the pachelor party. The funniest part of the movie is the ending credits, that's never good.

WTF? The Hangover deserves at least a 9/10. Personally I'd give it 9.5/10. Your sense of humor is irreparably broken.

I'd give it 3/5, meaning slightly better than an average comedy, much worse than Very Bad Things or the movies of real high caliber comediens like Will Ferrel and Ben Stiller.

Stiller's done good and bad, as has Ferrel. I think both are past their prime. Taledaga Nights, however, was pure, idiotic, genius if you're fortunate enough to interact with the NASCAR crowd.

The definition of an average comedy is that it has Will Ferrell or Ben Stiller in the lead role. All these famous comedians are trapped in their own mannerisms. Mike Myers is possibly the most pathological case of this.

Concerning the Hangover: It was fun as long as they kept finding new outrageous events from the previous night. The fun ended when the script had to start explaining how it all happened. Anyway, one of the better comedies of the year.

Hehe, well that is "somewhat" opposite of how I see those things. I personally found Hangover to be one of the most overated movies of all time. Zach Galifianakis was the only funny thing in the movie. Whereas movies like Zoolander, Dodgeball, Austin Powers 1,2, Night at the Roxbury, Starsky and Hutch are 10x better.

The reason why we see Stiller or Ferrell doing their same act over and over is that is what the public wants to see them do. They are part of a small group of comedians who do a very good and regular job of putting out a comedy every year or so that costs around the 20-40 million dollars to make, and happily makes back 60-80 million.

Their movies are fairly cheap, they make a good (rather than spectacular) profit. For the studios, this is infinitely better than the movies that cost 80 million to make and only bring in 40 million.

Zoolander - ugh
Dodgeball - funny!
Austin Powers 1 & 2 - cultish funny
Night @ Rox - meh
Starsky & Hutch - funny!

Stiller's best is Something About Mary while Ferrel's best is, by a HUGE margin, Taledega Nights. He was also goot in the Anchorman.

Myers was great with Austin Powers and Axe Murderer but has pretty much sucked since (downright creepy in The Cat/Hat movie). Myers is also so totally typecast now that he completely blew my suspension of disbelief when he showed up in Inglorious Basterds.

Stranger than Fiction is a pretty good movie, although quite different from his other movies. Taladega is good. I think Old School, Step Brothers and Elf are pretty good too. Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson are funny too.

edit: I forgot Blades of Glory!

I liked Old School quite a bit. I haven't seen Stranger than Fiction, Step Brothers or Elf so I can't comment.

will farrell films mentioned

Zoolander 5/10
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby 6/10
elf 5/10
Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004) 6/10
Starsky & Hutch (2004) 5/10
Kicking & Screaming (2005) 5/10 // yes same old
Stranger Than Fiction (2006) 7/10
semi-pro 3/10
step brothers 6/10 // extra point for the song at the end
Blades of Glory (2007) 7/10

So the comedies hes been in are better than average, though he does tend to play the same character

I actually saw a good comedy this week, idiocracy 8/10

Finally saw the film adaptation of The Road and, while very good (8/10), it's nowhere near as good as the book.

saw legion and have no idea wtf went on
can anyone explain this
Gabriel kills Michael his body dissapears, then 10 mins later he's back this time he's got his wings back and says "I gave him what he wants" and then kills Gabriel, and thats it apocalypse over - eh wtf...

I tend not to be a big fan of Will Ferrel, but I thought Blades of Glory was excellent. He did a great parody of himself in the Wedding Crashers, which is a movie I really enjoyed. And in this genre, I thought Eurotrip and Tropical Thunder were good examples of how to lift a spoof movie a little above your average poop and fart jokes.

Wedding Crashers actually made me feel downright uncomfortable with what scoundrels those guys were. Blades of Glory looked too stupid in the commercials for me to watch :)

Yes, precisely. I still consider them "average comedies" - they do one after another similar stuff, everybody already knowing what to expect of the films.

I don't mean I hate those films - I've seen all the films mentioned here, and laughed a lot for most of them. But I consider a movie "good" when it feels fresh, not when the same guy makes the same funny faces for the 30th time. These standard comedies are just a way to avoid boredom for a couple of hours.

This is why Stranger Than Fiction stands out from Ferrell's work - it's not a Will Ferrell movie, it's a good movie where Will Ferrell just happens to be in the lead role (just like Eternal Sunshine of Spotless Mind is not a Jim Carrey movie). Of the actual Will Ferrell movies, I liked Anchorman the best.

Tropic Thunder was great. A lot of Ben Stiller's work is not. Something About Mary was fresh and good at the time, before shock-comedy turned into a rule instead of exception.

Since you mentioned it, I absolutely hated Eternal Sunshine! I found nothing whatsoever redeeming about either of the protagonists. Maybe it stems from my inability to sympathize with people who stay in toxic relationships, but I found it annoying, depressing & repetitive.

I loved both Stranger than Fiction and Eternal Sunshine!! Preferred StF, but both really amazing films.
I just love this kind of film. I don't even know what category they are... the weirdo 'Being John Malkovic' headfuck category... What are they classed as? Drama doesn't really cover it, does it...
