Yah, I just realized that. Really weird how they made the announcements. Each statement makes it look like the other platform doesn't support cross-platform. So unless you read both you don't get the full picture.

Makes me wonder how this will be done on the other platforms. Will people on the other platforms get to choose whether they are matched with Xbox or PS players? Even weirder since the friend's list in Fortnite appears to be cross platform. What if you have friends in Fortnite that are playing on Xbox and PS. When you form your group, will the game notify you that you can't play with your PS friends if you have Xbox friends in your group and vice versa?

What a clusterfuck.

Seems like you'll be able to opt-in to "playing up." If you're on mobile you'll be able to choose to play against console or pc. If you're on console you'll be able to opt-in to play against PC, mac, linux(?). No word on whether you'll be able to opt-out of playing against "lower" platforms.

Yeah, that part I understand. What isn't clear is how it's going to handle other platforms playing with the consoles. Especially when playing with friends who might be on both Xbox and PS.

Or have they disabled the ability to have friends in Fortnite that are on different platforms? Before this used to be possible. For example, a friend who games mostly on PS just signed into it on PC to get on the friends list with a bunch of PC players, then when he's on PS4 he was still in the friends list of everyone on PC and they could game together. This was a few months ago when the crossplatform play was "accidentally" released.

Fortnite on Xbox will get cross-platform play with all other platforms, except PS4 because Sony.

Sony has always been open to crossplay with PC, before MS even. They're just not interested in crossplay with direct competitors, nor was MS last gen.

Epic announced crossplay with PS4/PC/Mobile before MS. MS then said that they're working with Epic to get crossplay with PC/mobile and here we are.

I honestly don't think we'll get cross-play between PS/XB any time soon... not this gen. If MS is the market leader next gen and they remain open about cross-platform, and if fans keep bugging Sony, then maybe.

MS is trying to sell things and being in third place has changed their view from last gen.

MS spent a good part of the later half of last gen in third place. Technically they are currently in second place at least for the near term.

And there was Xbox - PC cross play previously...Until Microsoft asked Fortnite devs to remove it:

Maybe they have a policy for shooters and making sure their players enjoy the game? Cross-play with PS4 will be fine but console players would be slaughtered by PC players in a game like Fortnite.

It's benificial to MS, not to Sony. Sony has the most rational behaviour.

For instance, some consumers might want to buy a PS4 because Sony has a much larger online community. With cross-play this argument vanishes.

I think it's the hyperbole that DrJay24 refers. The UN have a list of things that people, as a basic human right, are entitled too. They are mute on the subject of gamer's right to play with friends across platforms.

It's a first world problem by several orders of magnitude. And woe for people having to make choices. That rarely ends well.

But that's really not the true problem. You'll still be able to play the game with others. And that's also a problem with COD and FIFA. Ultimately that's only a tree.

You have one console, the XB1, you want to play some great free games that everybody in your school / college / workplace talk and play: like the excellent Warframe and the apparently awesome Fortnite. They tell you it's a F2P game so you'll be able to have fun without paying anything. Guaranteed.

The problem is, those friends are playing those games on PC or PS4 and you don't pay for Gold (because you are short on money).

That's the forest Microsoft is (successively) trying to hide: Having to pay a sub to play a game others play for free.

Cross play between PS4 and XB1 for a few games is only interesting for MS because they are already losing gamers and the others have more than twice more players. So it's twice more likely that people who would cross-play Fortnite have already a PS4, and not a XB1 (so MS wouldn't loose the customers they never had in the first place). And because they are the only one having a paywal in those F2P games so if those PS4 players would buy a XB1, they'll to pay a sub to play those games !
