Microsoft GC Conference: Live! (text)

Blocked here at work. Can someone post the highlights? I heard they were announcing accessory pricing for the FF wheel, etc.

aparently vista is ace. or so they kept saying.

Time to chat about Live Anywhere (you KNEW it was coming) - he's introducing Rich Wickham, the director of the Games for Windows business.

He's going to chat about reinvigorating Windows, "the world's biggest gaming platform." There's a developer video reel running now - some chap who worked on Company of Heroes says Windows Vista is ace. Bill Roper says it's ace too, and he really likes the My Games folder. Some chap from Age of Conan thinks Vista is ace too, because it has parental controls. Bill Roper is back. He's had a really hard think about it, and Vista is STILL ACE.

Now they're showing a video of Hellgate London, which is presumably also ace, although whether it's on the same scale of ace-ness as Windows Vista is very hard to determine.

The producer of Crysis is up now. He reckons Windows Vista is... Wait for it... Ace! He's very excited about HD. "So much hinges on your ability to see detail on the character," says some chap - the Company of Heroes man, perhaps? We're not sure what that has to do with Windows Vista, but it's probably ace anyway.

Hilarious! :D

Well i guess i can safely trade in my current version of PGR3 now. Still, $150 is a LOT, thats roughly double other wheels isnt it?
Good wheels are pretty expensive. IIRC the new logitech wheels are 299 MSRP. It's pretty much the best wheel you can buy IMO (if they are even avaliable yet). On the other hand they offer a 50 dollar Wheel as well. Just like most things, you get what you pay for.

I believe the Logitech wheel for 360 shown at E3 without FF is around $100. The PGR3 pack-in is only "while supplies last."

Gotcha, thanks for the info. I was never really a big racing fan so i had no idea they went up so high.

My wallet will tremble in fear if that $300 Logitech wheel with the gear shifter works with the PS3.

I don't understand this at all. Wouldn't it be logical to assume that people buying the wheel, are some of the more hardcore racing fans, and therefore, already own PGR3?

I mean, it's a good idea for new buyers, but are they going to give anything for the people who already own PGR3? It seems pretty idiotitc to be forced to buy a game I already own, just to get a peripheral that I can use with Forza 2. Who's brainchild was this?

I'm hoping for a $119.99 version without PGR3.

Well logitech is a great 3rd party hardware supporter, So I wouldnt be surprised if they allow it, or make one especially for the ps3/360. The 299 wheel will work with the old consoles, and PC's alike. So I dont see any reason why It couldnt work with the PS3 if the games allow it.

That wheel is a beast though, I dont think I could ever convince myself to cough up 300 for it, I hope prices drop for it fast whenever it decides to come out. But damn it sure is nice. Pretty much top of the line when it comes to racing wheels.

EyeToy is PC compatible, just not as standard and you need to grab the right driver. It's just a standard PC webcam inside (the EyeToy). I think the XB360 camera is price comparable with EyeToy at it's launch, and it does come with a game. EU50 for hardware and game is reasonable, especially considering the higher tech versus PS2's EyeToy.

An unsupported 'hack' though it's not much of a hack. Just a case of downloading the driver, the same as installing any old piece of PC hardware. I'd also hope they wouldn't charge more for the webcam being a PC compatible device when it's market is the XB360 and that's the job it'll be bought for. Buying a webcam for XB360 and being charged more because you can run it on PC whether you want to or not is adding unnecessary cost.

Does Sony provide the driver and technical support if it doesn't work?

Or is the Eyetoy "PC compatible" via an unsupported hack?

aw cmon Powderkeg, if it works, it works. Do you really need tech support on a webcam?
Theres plenty of tutorials on the subject, it's fairly easy to do.

You initially said "Yes, but unlike the EyeToy, MS's camera is also PC compatible." and Shifty corrected you. Not a big deal.
