MGS has most lifeforms in FPS games

This may not be that important in games, but it seems in first person shooters, the Metal Gear Solid series has the most animal life (or lifeforms). Note that the lifeforms in this case are not inclusive of the protagonist or antagonist (for example creatures you shoot to gain score or pass the mission, and don't attack you). Lifeforms here are those animation extras put into the game to provide more realism, to make the game feel more alive.

The hands-on winner is MGS3. MGS4 has about 11 different lifeforms. If you are interested in what they are, visit:

If you compare recent first person shooters, KZ2 only has one bug that eats corpses. MW2 has none I think (the dog attacks you, so is part of the mission). I don't think UC2 has any either (I haven't played it). Cut-scenes don't count.

Games that have the antagonist as lifeforms would fit Afrika, hunting games, and fishing games. However, they are part of the mission, and are not "extras" put in to provide realism.
 
crysis for consoles

Hey, this is a console forum. Did Crysis come out for PS3, XBox360, or Wii already?
On the second thought. Maybe Far Cry 2 had some animals or insects, but I don't think it had many. Does it beat MGS4? It probably lost to MGS3 though if it had lots.

In Far Cry 2, I tear up a bit everytime I hit a Zebra, or Wildebeast type create with my jeeps... then there are the birds...

Animals

According to Creative Director Clint Hocking, a large amount of animals will be present in the game. Large herds of grazing herbivores such as gazelles, zebras, buffalo, wildebeest and more will "not have a major effect on gameplay, but they can complicate the situation on occasion. Typically animals will flee the player or enemies when they detect them. Sometimes, enemies will chase or shoot at animals."

Predatory animals, such as lions or leopards, are not present in Far Cry 2.

Note that although not visually confirmed, in one gameplay video an elephant could be heard in the background audio.

Although there are some large herbivores that, in real life, can be dangerous, all animals in the game will flee from the player when approached. If the creature even touches a car, it will simply drop dead.

U2 definitely has animals, even in the Jungle sections. I even remember trying to shoot at the birds and a colourful parrot I saw thinking that the devs might have hidden a treasure in it's belly for me ;)

KZ2 has both the eletric bugs and the 'leccy spiders too. That's 2 at least, but considering the game's aesthetic (Helghan is certainly no lush tropical paradise) it's expected that the wastelands would be pretty barren and void of indigenous wildlife. (I felt the bugs and spiders did a great job in adding to the atmosphere).

Also, edepot your OP and thread title says "FPS" i.e. First Person Shooter... while U2 and MGS1-4 are not FPS'... (i wouldn't even class the MGS series as a Third Person Shooter, as the games are far from traditional shooters in the way of their principal gameplay mechanics. It'd be like calling InFamous a "shooter"... pedantic i know)

Anyways, are you talking about shooters in general or are you talking about FPS games?
 
Since when has MGS been a FPS?

Beyond Good and Evil had something like 50 different creatures, many of which weren't enemies, and is about as much of a FPS as MGS.

Anyway, why the need to distinguish "pure extras" from other lifeforms in the game? Surely it's a good thing if you can interact with things in a game's environment? Ecco the Dolphin had lots of fish and whatnot in it; looked nice, added atmosphere, and you could eat them.
 
Since shooters in general seem to be the topic at hand, Panzer Dragoon Orta definitely presents a much more lively ecosystem than most of the games being mentioned.
 
Modern Warefare 2 has chickens, there is even an achievement for killing 10 or so chickens in a mission ^^!

Heh. Likewise, Uncharted 2 has a trophy for petting all Yak in Chapter 16 ... :D

 
Does any of this really matter ? Does a FPS having 8 creatures vs 10 creatures that you can't interact with change the game for the worse.
 
With Crysis, I don't feel animals were necessary to the gameplay but were nice as for as immersion goes. They are a nice bonus, especially funny when you first encounter Mr. Tortoise on that first beach in the very beginning of the game. I remember when I first played the demo, picking him up and accidentally throwing him *tear*. I felt kinda bad lol.............

Far Cry 2, more so than any game before it I think should've had the largest repretoire (sp?) of fauna considering, it's Africa. While we tend to think of wild animals roaming all over the place there, it's not exactly like that to the extent we love to think of it, but these animals are there, especially in a setting like FC2's. Adding more wild animals, in particular dangerous wild animals would've been very cool.

In continuous thought, yes indeed props to MGS3 and it's vast amounts of animal life. They were actually useful to the player, creating a new dynamic in the gameplay that other games outside of RPGs have never touched, and most RPGs view in a whole 'nother manner. I'd love to see another MGS3 like game, be it another in the game series, or another game altogether because it was fun and interesting experimenting with the different animal and plant types for food. I do wish the whole scene played in the original MGS3 trailers that showed snake going toe to toe with a pack of dogs (yes I'm aware these were military dogs, not wild ones) with his XM16A1 was present in the actual game, in fact I wish so much had been preserved from the original inception. The whole "danger of the jungle" aspect wasn't there in the end unfortunately, but I feel it's a great setting the series needs to go back to via a remake or another offshoot. It's only unfortunate that Portable Ops 2 is stuck on a machine like the PSP with such a small screen and relatively limited processing power to fully realize what could be done with the jungle setting.

Yeah that was ncie as the wildlife reacted to you in Crysis. Fishes would get corious and then flee when you approached them etc. But chickens, turtoises, crabs etc could be used as weapons... really. Just pick them up switch to strength mode and throw them at someone *R.I.P*! :LOL:

Btw in that Crysis wildlife page it just defines groups not types.

Underwater - Great white shark, reef fishes, tropical fishes, river fishes, water bugs.

Land - Crabs, frogs, butterflies (different colors), turtles, flies, nocturnal bugs (glows), cockroaches, small flying insects (cant make out species), 'alien bugs'.

Birds land/sky - Chickens (big/small), finches, Gouldian finches, plover, seagull, tern.

Wtf... Death by CHICKEN?! I really should try this I guess, heh.

Anyway, I have a really hard time seeing how you could cause death by chicken to an armored soldier regardless how hard you throw it at them. :) Seems to me, the chicken would squish/disintegrate in your hand as you throw it before you could actually apply enough velocity to it for it to become a fatal projectile...

At least crabs and tortoises have a hard shell/carapace, which makes them slightly more feasible as a projectile weapon, heh.

But yeah, I guess this is what happens when you over-analyze a video game. :LOL:
 
Heh well you need to throw it multiple times and aim for the head, while the soldier is getting up on his feet throw it at his neck. But yeah games.. :LOL:
 
How is MGS an FPS? Did I miss something?

It's not really but you could play most of MGS4 in a FPS view if you really wanted to.
