Metal Gear Solid 3 launches in PAL land

Since the Metal Gear Solid 4 has already degraded and I can't find the other MGS3 thread, might as well start a new one for us PAL people (and of course anyone who'd like to join).

Please no spoilers in this thread though!

Anyways, I must say, I am really impressed as of now. The art-direction once again is far above anything in its genre, and that is really one of the things I love about this series. From the intro to the way the game starts - simply brilliant and just wants you to jump into the action.

As far as gameplay/graphics goes - I'm simply stunned. The jungle has a very impressive touch to it - even though the path which you have to follow is not limitless, the jungle and the view does give the player impressive you're in the middle of no-where and that you could just walk anywhere. Of course it is not so, but having this feeling IMO is what counts and I already found myself standing here and there a few times wondering if I've been here before. I suppose not being around human made structures for a good while will need time to get used to - but I'm certainly enjoying myself.

As far as drawbacks - I really do feel I have to mention - is the framerate. Having played and completed MGS2 numours times not too long ago (about 5 times on all difficulties including the extreme modes) - I do feel a bit let down that Metal Gear Solid 3 has a very noticable 30 fps framerate - that's down from 60. The difference, to my disappointment, is very noticable - especially in first person mode when looking around simply feels slow, unresponsive and strange. Oh well, can't have everything, although I do believe in 60fps being a must, at any cost. Guess I'll have to wait for Part 4 in that case. ;)

Other opinions?

Got the game yesterday, played through the first "Training mission" in normal difficulty.
I found that I ended up in firefights more often than in MGS2, actually I think I killed all the guards in that first part :)
Now that the radar is gone it's more difficult to avoid being spotted, and the guards seem to be more sensitive to noises and have a longer vision. Camouflaging might have helped to sneak through, and I did try that but those guards always managed to spot me at some point. It might have also to do that I had not yet come accustomed to the controls, thus making unintentional wrong moves.

I really didn't notice the difference between MGS2 and MGS3 framerates, but I haven't played MGS2 for a long time. In MGS2 in first person view there was occasionally this slight tearing effect, didn't notice it here.
The cutscenes don't seem to use the motion blur effect as much as MGS2, and maybe because of that I think some cutscenes seemed a little jerkier in places.

The hunting system is ok, but not as fun as I thought it would be. Although I haven't yet captured any alive, to use against guards, which might be fun.

The first couple of screens did look a bit drab in my rptv, and initially it wasn't such a visual  like MGS was, but the later screens got a bit better, and I have high hopes the visuals will get better still. The cutscenes are quaranteed Kojima quality.

I like the bizarre athmosphere of MGS2 and 3, if this game were just another more "realistic" jungle battle stealth adventure shooter I would have steered well clear of it, as I would think that kind of setting would not be my type. But MGS games have plenty of other elements that make them fun and interesting.

What, MGS3 is released in PAL territories now...?

I think MGS games create an atmosphere unmatched by any other game, and this one is no exception. Last 1-2 hours are pure bliss.

Tried out MGS3 with the Blaze VGA adaptor.

The game runs in Prog scan alright, just like MGS2

The difference in picture quality is huge, hard to go back to the interlaced picture after playing the game in prog scan, the picture is so crisp. The difference is far greater than with MGS2.

The picture doesn't quite map to the screen which is often the case when you use the VGA adaptor.

One thing is that MGS2 with the Blaze VGA Adapter was quite messy with screen tearing and a general unstableness. Like ZOE2 and other Konami titles. Looks much sharper, but it's a bit messier at times. Not sure about MGS3.

Bought it 3hours ago but havent start playing it yet..
Funny one of the biggest reasons i bought PS2 at launch was that i knew
AceCombat 4-Distant Thunder and MGS2-SL was to come. now 3(?) years
later i get the same wonderful feeling, bought ACE5 10 days ago and now
SnakeEater.. :D What a gaming week/week´s for European PS2 gamer´s
esp considering GT4 now also  although i´m not a big fan of car sims there´s alot that are.. ;)

So how do you sirs find it in comparison to MGS2? I'm sitting here trying to justify not to run and buy it.

Completed it this afternoon and holy moly at the last area and the cutscenes.

All in all it's a decent game, still don't like the camera though, which is my only gripe with the game. o_O

To me, MGS3 is one of the most amazing games of this generation, on PS2 or any platform.

I'm not sure I've seen production values like this anywhere else, ever. Just wait until you fight your first boss. It's crazy-insane, graphically, and fun and exciting as can be.

I'll admit, I wasn't really turned on by the early screens before this game's release. Then my girlfriend gave it to me for Christmas, and after putting this disc into my PS2, it made me realize that everything else is just a game.

MGS3 is the GT4 of stealth-action titles, if you catch my drift.

Enjoy.

I'm surprised it took so long. PAL-lites should be protesting at the Japanese embassy for the delays.

Blame France, Germany, Italy, Spain,.. ;)

But since we get the superior version, no harm done. :)

I really don't get this need for localisation. I'd probably puke all over the games if they for some reason started dubbing/subbing them in Swedish, heh.

Only MGS was dubbed into Spanish (btw: it's regarded as one of the best game dubbings ever), and Spanish forums went on fire when Konami confirmed that MGS2 wouldn't be dubbed.

It's ok for you to not get the "need" for localisation, but many people over here (Spain) are not very fluent in English, so I think that subbing it's the least they can do. Dubbing also would be great, as Spanish dubbing actors are among the best in the world. But I guess it doesn't make comercial sense all the effort to do it, specially with the high levels or piracy we have.

What I ask myself is why it takes so long to translate the texts, just the texts. That shouldn't be an excuse for the DELAY we Euros have to suffer everytime.

BTW: I am loving the game, with its tin case and all that...

Heh, I always wonder why they have to dub EVERYTHING in France and Germany. Subtitles suffice (since they don't ruin the film, game,...). Original voicework is always better than the dubbed ones, with very very very rare exceptions.

Also, I couldn't care less about the languages in the versions we get in Europe. We already have three official languages here in Belgium (Dutch, French, German) + an unofficial fourth one being English.
I prefer playing or watching a game/movie in it's original language, as long as I can understand it. English or subtitles in English are good enough. ;)
