Looking for Cygwin "guru"

Probably hopeless, but doesn't hurt to try anyway.

What I'm looking for, is someone who could do a new version of Irssi for Win32, it's standalone irssi using cygwin libraries.
http://pp.kpnet.fi/blaze/irssi/ - the site is in finnish, so I'll provide straight links too:
Stand-alone: http://pp.kpnet.fi/blaze/files/irssi-win32-standalone-0.3.exe
Binary for existing Cygwin installation: http://pp.kpnet.fi/blaze/files/irssi-0.8.9-cygwin.zip

Why am I looking for someone who could do this?
Because Irssi is the ultimate IRC client in my opinion, but I don't have shell to connect to with Putty & co to run it in, and the stand-alone version doesn't work under Vista x64 (works under Vista x86 with XP SP2 compatibility mode)

I know this should be possible to do, as the cygwin site (http://www.cygwin.com) reports that "The Cygwin DLL currently works with all recent, commercially released x86 32 bit and 64 bit versions of Windows, with the exception of Windows CE.", but the version used by Irssi for Win32 is years old (from 2004)

However, I have no idea how to do this myself, so all the hope I have is to find someone who can and is willing to.

Have you just tried replacing cygwin1.dll with a newer version? I just did that and it seems to still work on WinXP Pro, but I can't test on Vista64. PM me if you want me to email you a zip archive of the newer cygwin files.

Rebuilding it would be about four hours work (without encountering too much problems) unless you have everything installed and ready to go, so maddman's suggestion would be worth trying first. And if you want improvements, you're best off looking for an alternative. There are very many good IRC clients.

It worked on XP without changing the DLLs too (and in Vista x86 with XP SP2 compatibility mode), would be great if you can e-mail the files to me, unless there's a easy way for me to get them straight from the net (installing cygwin isn't the "easy way" :p )

I'm not sure which e-mail address I have in the profile, so send 'em to kaotika -a-t- gmail.com if you will

Oh, and I know there are some good IRC clients out there, but nothing beats Irssi in my opinion :D

I can get that emailed to you. Installing the very basic cygwin isn't much really, just download the setup.exe and let it work.

Edit: Gmail won't let me send a zip with .dll's in it! :D I'll work on this a bit more and try it again. Ok, back up your bin directory, then rename the file I sent you to .zip and unpack it. Let me know how it works.

It works :runaway:
Now I only need to find a new version of rxvt console to work with it, the standard command prompt console sucks, and rxvt starts endles instances of itself, was quite pain in the ass to kill them, took 5+ mins to find the "original" batch process which kept starting them since it was named the same

But irssi itself works now, so thanks

Check your email, I updated rxvt and libw11.dll and got it to run on my machine. Hopefully that should work on Vista64 now.

nope, still no go with rxvt, does the same (i even tried just starting rxvt itself, but it does the same, guess it's time to find a new console)

thanks for trying though

It was worth a try. Without a Vista64 machine to test on, I can't really tell if I'm doing any good. For what it's worth, I couldn't get RXVT to run with my cygwin install at all.
