Kojima leaves Konami to start new Studio *Confirmed*

I didn't play the last metal gear, but is there any mission when you have to take an inocent cat hostage? Some analysis might shed more light into this whole situation...

Transcript of negotiation with publishers.

Kojima: I need 10 years to make a new game!
MS: Get lost, in 10 years you might be dead!
Sony: Within 10 years TLG might be finished so why not!
It hurts because it's credible.

Four Sony platform generations of exclusive games minus xbox version of MGS 2 and Twin Snakes so I guess this was inevitable. I know he's been wanting to get away from the Metal Gear franchise for quite some time so this is his chance..... Unless Sony buys the MGS franchise lol.

I don't really see why Kojima needs to go exclusive. He's well known and well established with multiple platforms communities, so his games would sell very well across the board.

It's unlikely he's got any problems getting financing.

I wouldn't assume that. Without knowing more about why he and Konami parted company, any publisher would be insane to just give this guy a big bag of cash. It's not like they are buying IP, he doesn't own any of it.

If Square Enix can be short of financing for a game, so can Kojima, a lot more so! As much as we love him, he isn't exactly known for the accessibility of his games, and there are a lot of games that sell a hell of a lot more than Kojima games - see the critically revered MGSV which hasn't exactly set the world on fire with regards to sales figures.

I think often it's 'the devil you know'. Kojima has worked with Sony and has a good reputation. He needs money to start a new studio. If Sony are willing to fund that, that solves the headache of trying to create a functioning, financed business and allows him to get straight down to creating which is what he really wants to do, no doubt. Supermassive Games seems to be an ex Sony employee leaving to create a new studio that was happy to sign up exclusivity with Sony.

I would love a post mortem as much as the next person but I think its a simple case of Konami's new management wanting to move away from a high risk business. I am sure there was some infighting along the way that led to bitterness and accelerated termination but to think Kojima was the only one that put these wheels in motion is silly. You only need to look internally at Konami during last gen to figure out that they were closing shop. Zero new significant franchises, franchises on the decline, and all but dead arcade business. Just compare how many titles they published during the 6th generation compared to the 7th and its clear to see that axing Kojimapro was on the table at some point even if whatever transpired behind the scenes happened sooner or later.

I am not sure I follow. PP sold north of 5 million last I heard and might reach 6 million further past its launch.

I think if you look at only making 10 million + mega hits you will find yourself out of business real soon. Don't need a mega blockbuster to make money and diversifying past those "accessible" monster franchises is incredibly important else you would be missing out on a large group of game consumers. Kojima's software has sold a lot of units over his career and many many people know who he is because of it. It matters.

I think the problem that was mentioned here and elsewhere is that PP took a looooong time and a looooot of money to make. So 5 million ain't gonna cut it.

I'm shocked! I did not see that coming. /s
