Kinect Games

Ok, could you describe your setup? How big is your room, does the Kinect get any sun on it at any time, do you move it around at all? What equipment does your XBox connect to? What do you use for your audio output?

I have seen some cases where our echo reduction slowly degrades over time, and you have to recalibrate to restore it. We haven't been able to track it down to any specific cause though, and in my tests here I've run 16 hour 500 reboot stress runs with absolutely no degradation.

Wish there was someone as helpful as you with respect to Zune Marketplace (video)...

Activision announced their first Kinect title: Wipeout In The Zone. Based on the ABC game show Wipeout. Looks like a ripoff of Doritos Crash Course but with Kinect support...

The graphics tech is amazing, I've already posted some impressions in the game tech presentation thread. Also, if their gameplay programmers are as clever as the guys working on graphics then this might become a real system seller for Kinect. Very nice stuff in that presentation.

Yeah, this Milo game better become Fable: Kinect, and allow me to make a kingly ruling to have Milo thrown into a rat infested jail. I'd settle for the Milo game though.

ill try describe my setup, hopefully its understandable (english not my main language)

My bedroom is 5,5x4m (meter) .
is right next to another 3x4m bedroom with door connecting both room
is right next to 4x4m guest room with door connecting both room

-Kinect is put on about 2m from left-wall.
-Kinect got no direct sunlight but right in front of it (about 3.5m) there a dark-glass window that looks very bright when i see myself on kinect sports video.
-i was not move kinect around. But yesterday i put Kinect on top of Bookselft looking at my from diagonal high position. And it seems the voice recognition work better. Today still work OK, hoping in next few days still be OK. But this position make "Kinect ID" hard to setup (keep saying cant see my face).

My xbox connected to TV, LAN switch, wired xbox gamepad, Notepal Infinity Notebook cooler (i dont want to get RRoD again....), and there also...

wait ill upload a photo in a few minutes.
The photo
the photo cover about 2m of room width.

For audio output i use Xbox HDMI to TV to analog line-in into PC. PC upmix 2ch to 4ch. 2 PC speaker + 1 subwoofer front. 2 radio/tapedeck speaker on back

thanks :D

If you have not followed my 3D home theater rebuild then I'll say that what I bolded is not inaccurate if you get the improper cable BUT is not true when using the proper cable; I am using a 20m/65ft ACTIVE usb cable which works flawlessly and this is with it being run through my walls and ceiling.

For voice I took bkillians advice and turned the volume up VERY loud while audio calibrating and haven't had an issue with normal voice (part of me is wondering if it is the extender you are using that might be causing the issue).

yeah maybe my cable. I was use very old USB extender from the USB 1.0 era.... It work OK for mouse, Printer, USB hdd and so on but seems making problem with kinect.

currently im using official Kinect USB extender from Kinect box.
and when i got the voice command problem i was not using any usb extender.

The built-in kinect wire is long enough.
i use the extender only because its easier to disconnect kinect from Xbox then connect to PC/laptop.

btw reading about milo and kate again, watched the trailers again.. the Kinectimales graphic feel looks like Milo & Kate.

I have a spare USB extender from the Kinect box also, and it's long enough indeed. I used it once with my previous Xbox 360, and you never know when it might come in handy but I have it connected to the Xbox Slim and I am happy with it.

I didn't try the voice recognition because...I can't, but honestly I want to experiment with it some day. I followed the recommended steps but anyway, where I live we still don't have support for voice recognition.

^^ country where i live also not supported for voice.
you can bypass the region restriction by create new US account/gamertag.

or like me, i just change the location/locale/region setting from the Xbox setting while offline to US. Then as long as not connected to LIVE, the Voice Command will work surprisingly well eventhough english is not my native language.

and hoping the reposition of kinect will fix the "3 day calibration cycle" i got.

Aah. Yes, I can see you might have had some issues. We've found if you have the camera some place where it will heat up and cool down a lot, it throws the calibration off. (Sitting on top of your xbox could have been such a position).
Some notes: You have the PC demuxing dolby pro-logic from the 2 channel stereo. This is considered an "effect" and will degrade performance. It shouldn't cause the slow degradation you're seeing, but your normal performance will not be the best it could be. I see about a 6db difference in echo cancellation in a pure stereo and dolby PL2 setup (in other words, the echos are about twice as loud in a Dolby pro-logic setup) It's still good, it's just not the best.

In it's old position it was also very close to one of your speakers, that can also degrade performance.

As a suggestion, getting a wall mount (or a Ikea LACK shelf like I have) and mounting the sensor on the wall above your monitor might help in general, and also help with face recognition. Also, rerun Kinect ID, It uses the colour camera and is getting a different view of your face now than it used to, which may be why it's having trouble.

Let me know how it turns out :)

@bkilian
thanks i'll try the wallmount if the current kinect setup also loss voice recognition in a few more days.

as for the Kinect ID, my problem is it hard to setup Kinect ID with the current kinect position (high on diagonal left).
in about 50% setup progress bar, Kinect will say that it fail to see my face.

but i just tried kinect ID again and fixed the problem. Its me the one that wrong
because my Kinect not on TV direction, i wrongly face direction to TV. But after i setup KinectID while i Facing the direction of Kinect, Kinect ID Setup complete :D

And now Kinect ID is much better compared to the old Kinect location.
even when im sitting on chair, on floor. As long as my face is facing the Kinect, Kinect ID work.
On old kinect position, Kinect ID only able identify me if im standing.

reporting...

with the current position, Kinect Still can hear my voice command today :D
seems this "top left" position fixed my "deaf kinect" problem.

Excellent, glad it's working for you. I still recommend the wall mount simply for usability, since it's confusing when the sensor and the monitor are not in the same general direction. Throws off your bowling and table tennis a lot :)

i just moved kinect now to right on top of TV.
but now kinect 100% deaf, but weird.

Voice Command still work (offline from xboxlive because my region unsupported).
but after online on xbox live, i no longer can voice-message or voice-chat to friend.
I still can record, but in play there no voice recorded. Complete silence. (like if "Kinect Chat microphone OFF" but i have checked its turned ON ).

btw right after i placed kinect to new location i do Voice Calibration while online on LIVE. is now Microsoft also disable Kinect Voice Chat for unsupported region? (my locale singapore)

googling this problem i cant find solution......

EDIT:
just tried while offline i pay Halo Reach.
Usually if i speak there will be "antenna" icon on lower-right of TV. Now the icon wont appear even when i screaming....

EDIT2:
just tried repositioning kinect to another place, still voice command work but Chat Microphone still 100% deaf.

EDIT3:
nevermind, fixed the problem. 1 Wired Xbox gamepad is the culprit. i unplug it and kinect Chat Microphone back working. :D
it seems this one gamepad always think there a headset plugged in.

Oh yerah, the chat microphone issue. There are a few things about using Kinect for chat that are suboptimal, one is that we don't know which player is talking, so everything your girlfriend says gets transmitted too, we turn off the kinect mic if a headset is plugged in, and we set the permissions on the chat to the lowest common denominator, so if you and your son are playing online with someone your son would not be allowed to talk to, then that person would not be able to hear you, and you will not be able to hear him.

A few people argued against using Kinect for chat, since it didn't really make sense, and we would have been able to remove one of the cpus in the camera, but it was deemed a "hero feature" and got bolted on, warts and all.

Fun fact: We run two entirely separate audio pipelines for kinect, one for chat, and one for speech. They have different echo cancellation implementations (one is integer, one is float), but they get reasonably close results.

Hmmm so when do we get a good exercise-game? i.e. Not fitness software, but a true to goodness game that is fun and requires a lot of physical activity ... I am thinking of a boxing game :p Kinect Sports boxing wrapped up in a nice package (in between fight exercise band "training"? Speed bag etc) would do the trick.

I don't understand that sentiment, as I would assume the opposite was true (ie: it made perfect sense).

As an aside, I was online having a chat with Scott the other day while he was playing the new Fight Night (a game that is crying out for a spectator mode if any EA devs are reading this) and I decided to create a character. When it came to taking a photo of myself, I just foolishly assumed that Kinect would take the place of a Vision Camerax. Sadly that's not the case.

I suppose the obvious question is.... why not? I realise there aren't a vast quantity of games out there designed to use the old vision camera, but it seems plain dumb for the Kinect RGB camera to be seen by the Xbox as a vision camera for those titles that support it.
