BTW MARCONELLY, WHAT WAS THE THING KZ WAS SUPPOSED TO DO THAT NO PS2 GAMES HAVE DONE??????

Volumetric grass. I think they grass is done with very well designed textures+alpha though, now that I have seen better screens.
What was earlier believed to be volumetric grass, is now, according to marconelly, traditional texture grass.

What's Ray-Casting ?

Some quotes from Edge below,

"It's as stylised as Metal Gear Solid 2, but richer in terms of textural detail".

"Many of the graphical effects are created because Guerrilla draws multiple layers of smaller textures on top of each other. 'The operations on a per-vertex level are actually very flexible and more powerful than per-vertex operations on PC and XBox,' explains development director, Arjan Brussee."

"The texture quality is produced through a neat multi-layering technique. When enermies are far away layers are removed to maximise performance without impairing the visual quality"

"As it turns out, the unsteady framerate is caused by raycasting - due to movement and AI - and not so much by graphical detail. We are constantly measuring the performance and estimating our headroom for optimisations and applying the most critical points of slowdown. We'll hit a constant, high framerate in the end."

What's Ray-Casting ?
The operation of calculating a line(ray) intersections with any objects/polygons/whatever that might lie in its path. In said context, AI would use raycasting to "see" the world/obstacles around it.

Anyway what he says is standard fare for most PS2 titles - being limited by non-graphics processing (typically highlevel code on CPU core).

nice info. :)

To sum up my impressions on the game this far, I must say that I am mighty impressed by the graphics. It might not hold the title as the game with the most polygons, most textures or what ever, but as a whole, it certainly rivals the best.

My only concerns right now are 1.) framerate 2.) animation and 3.) gameplay/control. I think these 3 things may decide if the game will be a great experience or just an average one. Here's hoping for a 60 fps (that would be phenomenal), clean animation like any Naughty Dog or Konami game and a control/gameplay up to par with TimeSplitters. :D

Scans schmans. Gimme framebuffer grabs instead, even a good scan is still just an approximation of what the game looks like.

Rediscover:

Your scans are blurry and lacking in color saturation. Only proper framebuffer grabs can truly show what the game looks like.

It only needs to play better.

yeah it will, difference between 25fps and 60fps is huuuge, btw i still dont know if the fog is a part of the enviroment or that they are poor devs/.

My friend (who worked at lostboys) told me he is pretty confident that they achieve good gameplay(and 60 fps). The weapons seems to be allready topnotch, solid and great in feeling .same goes for AI.

I love their graphical (and design ) approch, and also they their engine design seems cleverly rooted on ps2's hardware "missfits"

probably for the reason of some hardcore demomaking youth .

If this game is fun and there is ONLINE PLAY, I'll have to pick it up.

Graphics are pretty nice IMO.

I think this game looks better then halo 1 for sure , i even compared some pics and its clear that this game has more graphical detail. Also this game uses the ico lighting so its really hard to compare these pics to what the actual game looks like. Once u see it in motion im sure it will look a lot better then these screens.

that was mostly speculation.

i believe the roots are from http://www.orangegames.com
,2 main coders also made jazz jack rabbit 2,and were part in the unreal 1 project. They took their time , Killzone is about a 4 years old idea and slow process.
