Ken Lobb on the future of gaming

The stuff about Nintendo is dead on (borderline stuff)... At least it closely it resembles my personal thoughts about their developement...

Yeah we should have more of these kind of interviews and fewer of the We're gonna push a trillion polygonz per minute and get Toy History level of graphix in the games, u know when you actually play, we call that reel-time kind of interviews.

It's good to know that behind every horde of PR zombies there's somebody who actually watches and analyzes his competitors with attentive acumen

That interview was boring!
Though he had a very pleaseant manners, he did not have much to say.
Or the interviewee didn't ask the right questions... anyway, I'm none the wiser after reading that, and imo that makes it a worthless read.

Does anything satisfy you anymore? :devilish:

Yep, that Zelda comment made me go "Well if u like it so much, freaking copy the formula and slap a big boobed chick as main character!!". Not saying that a typical interesting Xbox games needs big boobies.

It was an excellent interview. Fanbois typically still have a problem with interviews like this.

Fanboys and old grampas who are not easily satisfied anymore. :devilish:

Seriously though, I think MS will learn from their mistakes and hopefully that means better software, cause they badly need that.

You're calling me a fanboi?!?!?

What else, other than "Oh, isn't that Ken Lobb a nice person, he's not bullish at all" did you get from that interview?

NOTHING!!

It might have been a good interview, as in it wasn't offending in any way.
But imo he was just being diplomatic, as when you are when you really can't comment on the more interesting questions. He didn't have a visions of the industry or the future, or wasn't asked.

Grampa, did u take your medication this morning?

Well, it shows that MS is at least thinking about where they did wrong this time around, they are looking at their competition and acknowledging what they did right, and that only means MS has the potential to grow into an interesting player in the next generation.

Something they have to do a lot recently. (iPod market share inside of MS at 80% without supporting their own WMA format) ;)

Fredi

Yes, and i don't see Nintendo noticing the success their competition is having. They do seem to want to do their own thing and that's it...

I'm not saying Nintendo should try to get GTA-style games in, but at least acknowledge that the market today is what it is, and they need to change. MS seems to be adapting, or at least they're trying to.

It will be interesting.

Okay, let me just go through the interview for you question by question:

Q1 Would you say that 2005 is the most important year for Xbox to date? (...I bet he's gonna say year 2005 will suck for xbox)
Lobb: blahblahblah...absolutely, Live rocks and will rock .....blahblahnumbersnumbersblahblah...

Q2 To date, has Microsoft gotten its money's worth from Rare? (...I bet hes gonna say it was a huge mistake, and he himself should be fired=
Lobb: blahblahblah...yeah, Rare rocks and will rock, actually they will rock more than they are rocking now...blahblahblah...Conker dropped my friends jaw.... blahblah

Q3 What is the story with Perfect Dark? (...I bet he's gonna show some ultra secret screenshots of PD for xbox2, and a release date too)
Lobb: Joanna Dark will have boobs and dress in a tight outfit.

Q4 Can you explain your job and the criteria you use in searching for new games?
Lobb: We tend to go to the people that have ideas that are somehow new and fresh. So, we'll talk to these people, a lot of whom I've known for a long time -- I mean, the industry is kind of small -- with the idea of, "Okay, so, what type of game do you really want to make? We have faith in you." We don't just necessarily go, "Well, you're a team that did a great racing game, why don't you make us a great racing game?" It's more about the passion behind the creators and what we can do to help them make the games they really want to make. (that was actually a good(ish) comment, though not surprising)

Q5 What have you been doing and what will you do in the future to strengthen bonds with Japanese developers?
Lobb: Tecmo and Team Ninja.... but I really should not comment on that.

Q6 Dice?
Lobb: blahblahblah... the party after Dice is always nice, lots to drink... blahblahblah....

Q7 Do you think that graphics alone are enough to propel the next-generation?
Lobb: Live rocks and will rock...... blahblahblah...graphics will be better next gen than what they are this gen....blahblah... Halo2 and Live rocks.

Q8 What do you think Sony's ultimate plan is with the PS3?
Lobb: Live rocks and will rock harder next gen, I don't hate Sony.

Q9 What do you think of Nintendo's Revolution?
Lobb: Live rocks and will rock, putting generic games to Live will make it rock even more, I don't hate Nintendo but "different" games are not no.1 sellers.

Q10 Do you think Nintendo is afraid to compete directly against Microsoft and Sony?
Lobb: blahblahblah... I like innovative, non-massmarket games, but they don't sell... blahblahblah...

Q11 If you could have one Nintendo IP on Xbox, which would you choose? (I bet he's going to choose Kirby!)
Lobb: Mario, Zelda, Metroid (Oh no!! He chose the three most well known and best selling Nintendo IP's! Who would have quessed!!)

Q12 How much ass do you think Microsoft is going to kick over the next few years? (I bet he's going to say they will probably fail no matter what they do...)
Lobb: we're going to kick some serious ass and we're really gonna make it, we really are doing our best

Rabid,

Thanks for summing up that interview so I won't have to check it out myself and waste 5-10-ish minutes of my life reading the inane babble of a man who worked for a company which made their fortunes copying well-tried Nintendo gaming formulas and now can't even get anything finished... I mean, WTH? :D

Q13 - Could you enlighten me on the theory of relativity.

Lobb: Absolutely, Live rocks and will rock, relatively speaking.
