Ken Kutaragi Interview

Add-ons and consoles never go too well, you'd think everyone from the manufacturers to the consumers would have understood by now. I mean it's only been 15 years since the SegaCD started the trend. :|

Options are good, as long as we don't get PC-like options on consoles. Normal people don't want to choose the levels of AA, texture detail or levels of tesselation in console games at the expense of framerate and all that crap.

Consoles are closed platforms and the software for them should be as closed as possible, obviously within certain limits and depending on what software we're talking about.

When have "options" ever worked?
Though I agree with your general idea, I think you're off on some points.

When have "accessories" ever sold?
Supposedly the Eye-Toy is a nice seller for the PS2, but I haven't seen the figures and I know there was an issue with developers having to bundle the actual camera with all of their games to insure people who bought the games would have the hardware required.
I know the million mark was beaten ages back. Might be 2 million now. However developers do not need ot bundle the software with the hardware! There's some games with EyeToy support, but it's only buying the EyeToy and it's packaged games you get the camera itself!

So this bit is very wrong...
So if you bought two Eye-Toy games, you ended up with two Eye-Toys (and paying for them, while needing only one).

How many people bought the internet interface for the PS2? I know I didn't go online with mine until I bought my slimline that had a built in ethernet port.
Internet gaming isn't hugely popular, not because you need an addon though. Lack of inbuilt networking isn't what's stopping people going online.

Generally addons are a huge success, as PS2's HD is testament. But I think that's mostly how they're used/not used. Of course, being addons means they often get overlooked as the markets not there!

How many people use the s-video connection on a dvd player now to get a better picture? not many

Yeah, they're all using the component out for an even better progressive picture.
