Is PS3's scaler working now?

Again..don't believe to everything you read on the internet..

I'm guessing from your post that you guys have more accurate info than we do. In any case, thats the info we've been given so that's what we're going off of. I'm starting to wonder if us 3rd party devs are getting the shaft when it comes to being given accurate and timely info!

I'll assume that nAo is right and that there is nothing wrong with the hardware scaler. Now this makes me wonder what other incorrect info we've been given. If I find out two years from now that theres really 12 spu's in there, I'm gonna be pissed ;)

I'm sure I've said this before (in another thread) but there's no freaky favouritism with regards information given to 1st parties and 3rd parties. For what it's worth, we have the same SDK releases, the same developer support paths, and the same documentation. Seriously. With regards to nAo's "don't believe everything you read on the internet" comment, I would interpret that as saying that nobody is sure who is responsible for any scaling hardware that may or may not be present in PS3. So the poster he quoted (phat) may be incorrect when specifically referring to NVIDIA.

As stated above, no.. you get the same as 1st party. If you're being given inaccurate information, then so am I..! :)

Hmm, maybe we're both getting the shaft then! Just ran into another one today. We want to do 'X'. Sony just told us under no circumstances can we do 'X'. Ironically, one of Sony's own titles does exactly the 'X' we need. Even more ironic is that said title is a direct competitor to ours. Irritating? Very much so. I won't mention what 'X' is here, but if you want to know just pm me and I'll tell you. Since you're already a PS3 dev it'll be no harm no foul.

You know there aren't many "outdoor" arena based Sony sports titles, right? :devilish:

That has nothing to do with 1st parties. Certain dev/publishers get away with things that others don't, because of varying things (developer name/pedigree, market requirements etc.).
These things vary from titles getting published with a plethora of class A bugs that noone should be exempt from (Enter the Matrix, on ALL platforms), circumventing TRCs that are supposedly not negotiable (Konami shipping PS2 titles with V-Sync disabled when TRC clearly mandated this was not allowed at the time), to possibly even using restricted functionality of hw (Namco bypassing PS1 graphic libraries when Sony still refused that to everyone else).

Notice all the "special cases" I listed are 3rd parties as well, and these are just few of the many (and aren't exclusive to any one maker/platform).

Problem is most of those examples are have either immediate negative repurcussions on the developer/publisher or come back to bite them in the ass much later..

I've got a question for some of the tech-heads around here. Lately I've noticed that games being released on both PS3 and 360 are stating 1080p support on the back of the box. For example, The Darkness, Overlord, Colin McRae, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribean, Rainbow Six (ps3) and so the list goes.... Now I'm pretty sure that when a title is announced as being 1920x1080 the developers/publishers/manufacturers sing it from the rooftops.

Now, my reasoning is that they all list 1080p support is that they support that resolution through upscaling over HDMI on both consoles, NOT because they are being rendered this way. Is that the case, only some people I know are very confused on the matter as they still believe the PS3 cannot upscale 720p games to 1080p.

assuming games like R6 Vegas, Darkness, NGS are rendered in 720p and scaled to 1080i/p using the 960x1080 method, how come some of them look ok at 1080i/p while others (R6 Vegas in particular) looks quite bad at 1080i compared to 720p?

Good question. From the SS I've seen RS:V is a mess at 1080P, while games like Ninja Gaiden Sigma look fine compared to 720P. I assume Ubi screwed up the upscaling, like they upscaled 480P instead of 720P

i played The Darkness demo at 720p and 1080i too and it looked the same. i just bought vegas and even at the main menu it looks quite blurry at 1080i. now i'm forced to uncheck 1080i in the ps3 settings just for vegas. since i'm lazy and don't want to keep switching it, i'm leaving it this way as the PS3 can now scale blu-ray movies to 720p (although 1080i looks a tad sharper).

Im still confused. Does the PS3 now upscale DVD movies?

Little off topic, but dont want to make another. Does the 80gig version have backwards compatibility with PS2 games? I heard it dropped it, and now only the 60gig has it, which is being sold out for good.

the ps3 does upscale DVD movies (and is a good upscaling dvd player btw) and it also upscales ps2 games. i think the ps3 is using software scaling for ps2/dvd movies.

i believe the 80GB ps3 won't have the EE chip so it will use software emulation. backwards compatibility isn't completely removed, although the compatibility isn't as good, its still pretty good and it will improve as Sony releases firmware updates.

Yes, the PS3 now upscales PS1/PS2 games as well as DVDs.

And the 80gb PS3 does not have 100% BC like the 60gb. The 80gb model does not have the Emotion Engine inside. If you want to see what games are and are not compatible then this is the place to check

In the US, at least for now. May get deployed and take it with me if I decide to get it though.

Thanks for the answers. Looks like I may try to get a 60gig version. Thats what seems to be the best?

You may as well look up other characteristics of the 80GB version (heat, fan noise) if your top priority is not BC, before the 60GB goes sold out.
