Insomniac Games Brian Hastings on why PS3 is the console to beat

Some people on this forum may write off what he said a fanboy talk or something bad but I trust what he say over anybody in this forum who is not a PS3 developer. I don't think his full of it. His thought were clearly penned and fair. The only thing I would say it Xbox live $270 over five years is cheap. However, free is better sometime. If it sucks, than even free won't be good. I'm not saying Home will suck but we don't know yet if nearly 6 million users now on xbow live will perfur Home to it.

So I guess if a Ford spokesman made a blog giving the top 10 reason why the newly reintroduce Ford Pinto will become the number #1 automobile in terms of sales then you would believe him? What does working a for dev give you that enhances your ability to determine the future prospect of a console?

I think you're confused. He said insomniac developer's data is wrong so how does he know its wrong if he doesn't have the data.

3.2 billions is a lot of money for "viral" (if anything I would say effective) marketing campaign!

It's not just about 10 seconds. Its about you getting up and changing the discs.
You're sure its 10 seconds? He was talking about streaming so you are not subject to load time. Now if you change to a new disc you have to start streaming the level to fill up the memory. Its at least few minutes for the whole process (getting up to eject the disc, putting the disc in and starting streaming).

GOW load times are ~5seconds. You're really splitting hairs here, the bottom line is having to change a disc every 5-10 hours is a minor inconvenience at best.

And his fundamental point, that somehow a linear game would be limited by disc space is just plain dumb.

50GB is still good, you cant deny that more space is better. Game cut-scenes (CGI) and high bitrate surround sound. But the RAM for the machine is still 512MB and even if effective streamming is used it is still limited to to 512MB, HDD read/write speed and BD-ROM read speed.

Useable ram for the system is 416mb actually. Compared to 480mb for 360.

Isn't live only 50 dollars a year? So 50 x 5 = 250 (you know I could be wrong). Where did he get 70 dollars for the first year from?

Eh, at least we are all squabbling over something as non-important as games. I'd hate to see arguments over real world issues...

Doesn't matter. You'll miss $270 spread over 5 year just as much as you will miss spending 14 cents everyday for the next 5 years, little to none.

I dont see anything wrong with paying small amounts per year for a good service. Of course a free service could be as good or better as the service that costs. Usually the free services are simpler and not as complete as the one that costs. But I expect Sony to try to match Live and vice versa.

Yeah I think spending on viral marketing the equivalent of 8 million Xbox 360 Premiums would seem a little foolish.

MS would of been better served by shipping the first 18 million 360s Premium for $225.00 MSRP instead of investing 3.2 billion in viral marketing.

You're sure that the time it takes to put the disc in till you start playing the game is only 5 seconds?
I haven't played the game yet so I don't know. But somebody play this game know for sure.
To fill up 480 MB you need at least 44.4 seconds (10.8 MBs for a dual layer disc). If you transfer half of it , it would take 22.2 seconds. These numbers are calculated in ideal situation. I don't know where you get 5 seconds from.

Paying for Live means Microsoft has a reason($$) to make it a good and reliable service.
It remains to be seen how reliable free really is.

Funny how fast and furious this guys opinions get skewered here, yet when some PR guy from the GoW project says that the PS3 can't do GoW it's Gospel and repeated around the web (and here) for months. Then it was the PS3 can't do horse armor in Oblivion.

I think this type of "assume the worse about Sony and the PS3" attitude backs up this guys first point, it's popular to attack Sony. The media and Internet dorks have been in anti-Sony mode for a while now, it shows here in these forums.

As for his other comments, he works for Sony in a way so of course it's 80% spin and 20% truth.

QFT.

I think he meant level loading otherwise it doesnt make sense.

Lol, are you purposefully not getting the point? Even if it was 60 seconds it's not a big deal if you only have to do once every 10 hours.

For the record, just did a test, 12second load time for gears from main menu.

That lazy coding if you need to refill all 480 MB in RAM. Most multi-disc games can use redundant data on each disc to avoid this scenario.

You are talking to a guy that payed 45 bucks every three months for a year to only play WoW a total of about 24 hours.

I was honestly curious where the 70 dollar startup fee came from. I am glad Sony's service is free. If/When it does well it will cause MS to quite possibly change their service model. Win Win for us I think.

First of all is this an April Fool's joke? If not...

The Wii Fad Will Fade
OK, this one’s going to be controversial, but I have to say it. I like Nintendo a lot. I think Nintendo has innovated far more than any other company in the industry. And I think the Wii is really, really fun. But… let me relate to you a story that may sound familiar:

Anti-Nintendo "FUD" always begin like this... have you all noticed this? However putting that aside...

Phil Harrison said:
"But I fear that it won't have a lasting impact beyond that of a gimmick. so the long-lasting appeal of the platform is at peril as a direct result of that."

Phil said the same thing about the DS, but since he was "debunked" it seems that Sony is using other "employees" to spread FUD. Unfortunately it will all be for naught. Why? It's because the PS2 and the DS was attacked constantly by mountains of FUD for years... and nothing came of it.

Anyway changing discs is bad no matter how you spin it.
