If the Wii wins this gen...

...will we see consoles from companies like Samsung and Matsushita much sooner than expected? If the Wii demolishes the PS3 it proves that you don’t have to have a loss-leader business model to dominate this industry. I'm sure some computer and electronics companies are watching the Wii very closely.

Well it helps that you also know how to make good games. A Panasonic or Samsung console can't survive without games even if the hardware is profitable. It's a different market today than in the past.

But who determines what a good game is or how well it sells? Internet message boards <-- or the average consumer? Wii Sports is driving Wii sales and Nintendogs/Braintraining drove DS sales so a new entree into the console arena doesn't need "Grand Theft Auto" of "Final Fantasy" to succeed. ;)

So who's going to be making games for these CE consoles? Who would buy these consoles if there aren't any games?

Even if Nintendo is able to win this generation, I don't see how that makes entering into the console realm as an outsider significantly easier than what it is today, well maybe entering would be easier, but the competition wouldn't. I personally wouldn't bet any money on these newcomers to out do Nintendo in Nintendos' game or succeeding against MS or Sony at their game. If you want to enter this business and succeed at this point, you have to bring something VERY unique to the table. as the competition is outrageously fierce.

Personally I hope the console crammed with most new technology ought to win, if we're thinking on what kind of console we want next generation. :)
I doubt Samsung or Matsushita could give us a better console-experience, compared any of the current console-providers. :-/ And i don't want two more consoles, in addition to the current ones.
We need the games on the current consoles, aswell as the PC, so I don't want two more companies to cut into the various game-libraries. :-/

Matsushita already tried, albeit halfheartedly, to get into the console market in the 90s. Remember M2? :)

the barrier for entry into gaming market is so high, i would expect someone with co alliance to come into market if they feel its worth breaking down triumvirate Nin-MS-sony. something like one console released by multiple companies maybe???

Well the problem isnt building a console. Anyone can do that as long as you have some cash to spend. The problem is getting devs to build games for your console. Why would a dev take the risk of devving for a console wich comes out in 2 years, without any previous userbase or credibility if they can also dev for nintendo/ms/sony knowing there will be people buying the system and hopefully their game.

Anyway, I hope wii wins if it only was to see those 13 year old fanboys finally shut up with the retarded nintendo bashing.
